Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
A beloved childhood classic, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang tells the charming story of a down-on-his-luck inventor and single father, Caractacus Potts, whose creations never quite work out as planned. However, when Caractacus finally invents a flying car, he takes his children and his soon-to-be romantic interest on a spectacular adventure to the fictional land of ‘Vulgaria.’ Based on a novel by Ian Flemming and adapted for the screen by Roald Dhal, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is packed with catchy songs, whimsical costumes and, of course, the antics of Van Dyke.
Cobstone Mill, Buckinghamshire, UK
And now, the iconic windmill, which served as the Potts’ family home in the 1968 film, has been brought to the market for £9 million ($11.5m). The historic windmill is believed to have been built in 1816 and is located in Buckinghamshire, England, not far from London. Used to grind cereal until 1873 and later damaged by a fire, Cobstone Mill required substantial renovations before it was in a fit condition to be used as a film set.
Cobstone Mill, Buckinghamshire, UK
After its role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the property was bought at auction in the early 1970s by film director Roy Boulting and his wife, actress Hayley Mills. “It was love at first sight,” Mills wrote of the windmill in her 2021 memoir Forever Young, according to The New York Times, although she also described the property as “utterly impractical.” Mills never actually lived in the windmill, as the marriage ended before the renovations could be completed.

Between the main house, which was substantially expanded in 2016, and the windmill itself, the property offers six bedrooms and four bathrooms. The original mill workings are still a key feature of the interior of the grade II-listed mill, and its sails have been fully restored over the last 18 months, according to Savills, which holds the listing. The entire property, comprising the mill, home and pool, sits on 36.7 acres and boasts breathtaking views of the Chiltern countryside and the village of Turville, which fans of the 1990s English sitcom The Vicar of Dibley will recognise as well.

The Princess Diaries
The ultimate millennial nostalgia flick, The Princess Diaries was an instant success, spawning an equally popular sequel, and, it has been announced, there's an eagerly-anticipated third film in the pipeline. The original 2001 hit movie starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews follows the life of Mia Thermopolis, an awkward American teenager, as she discovers she is the heir to the throne of a small European country and must juggle princess training alongside the everyday trials of being a teen.
Mia's high school, San Francisco, USA
Many of the film’s pivotal scenes take place in and around Mia’s high school – the fictionalised, preppy, San Francisco “Anthony P. Grove High” – which is actually an impressive neo-classical, Mediterranean-style, single-family home. The building dates to 1923, and while its iconic façade and circular entry staircase are immediately recognisable from the film, its interior actually boasts four bedrooms and four bathrooms rather than lockers and computer labs.
Mia's high school, San Francisco, USA
The 4,554-square-foot home straddles two exclusive San Francisco neighbourhoods. It is one of five Italianate properties situated along the eastern edge of the Presidio, a former Army post-turned-national park, all designed by prominent local architect August Headman. Inside, the villa boasts elegant, classically appointed interiors, with hardwood flooring, arched doorways, French boiserie, and traditional moulding throughout, not to mention spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding skyline, the bay, and the lush eucalyptus groves lining the Presidio from every room.

The living spaces include a formal dining room, living room complete with a woodburning fireplace, media room, home gym, and a large eat-in kitchen equipped with stainless steel appliances, marble countertops, and glass tiling. Upstairs, the master suite offers breathtaking views of the city skyline, as well as a walk-in closet, walk-in shower, and oversized soaking tub. The dreamy home was last on the market with Compass for £7.3 million ($8.9m). We hope whoever snapped it up has been able to shake the feeling of being back in high school!

Notting Hill
The 1999 romcom Notting Hill immediately captured the hearts of viewers all over the world and flooded London’s northwest neighbourhood with tourists eagerly seeking the quaint Easter egg-coloured buildings, bustling street markets and, of course, the iconic Travel Bookshop. In the film, the shop provides the perfect 'meet cute' for the charming but awkward bookseller William Thacker (Hugh Grant) and glamorous American film star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), who immediately strike up an unconventional but utterly adorable romance.
The flat above The Travel Bookshop, London, UK
Fans of the film may be devastated to discover that the flat above The Travel Bookshop – a real storefront on the famous Portobello Road in Notting Hill – was last placed on the market for just shy of £2.4 million ($2.9m) but it unsurprisingly sold within a month. The three-bed, two-bath maisonette boasts 1,414 square feet of space, copious amounts of natural light and an unbeatable location in the heart of one of London’s most scenic neighbourhoods.
The flat above The Travel Bookshop, London, UK
The first floor of the flat features an open plan kitchen, dining, and living area, which offers original exposed brick, hardwood flooring, and a small fireplace. White walls and ceilings give the space an airy, open feel and French country-inspired furnishings make the living area particularly cosy.

Heading upstairs via a rustic wooden staircase, the second floor offers two double bedrooms and a full bathroom. The third floor is entirely devoted to the master suite, which boasts gorgeous vaulted ceilings and a unique round window, plus a luxurious master bathroom complete with a soaking tub and a steam room.
The Goonies
A cult classic, The Goonies is considered to be one of the best kids' movies of all time – and for good reason. It was released back in 1985, but even today it remains the sort of adventure flick you can watch over and over again, which might have something to do with the fact two Hollywood greats, Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, were involved in its writing. The story follows a group of kids, who, after finding a treasure map, set off on an extraordinary adventure.
Mikey Walsh's family home, Oregon, USA
The film opens right here, in the fictional home of Mikey Walsh and his older brother, Brand, played by a teenage Josh Brolin. Located in Astoria, Oregon, the property was built in 1896 and spans 2,336 square feet. In the movie, the house is kitted out with plenty of amazing 80s design details, including frilly curtains and beige and brown furnishings. While it's undergone a slight makeover since then, it's still very much recognisable.

Inside, fans will remember the living room, which featured in multiple scenes. The room has huge windows and glossy hardwood floors. There's also a large kitchen, a dining room, three bedrooms and two bathrooms – one of which boasts gold walls and a matching gold bathtub. Sadly, the only treasure to be found is the home's beautiful views of the Columbia River, the bridge and the city skyline.

Fans will also know that the attic played a key role in the film. Accessed via a pull-down staircase, this is where Mikey and his friends discover the ancient treasure map, which sets them off on their adventure. Today, the space is a cosy bedroom with skylights. In November 2022, the house landed on the market for almost £1.4 million ($1.7m) and sold in just 20 days. According to The Independent, it was snapped up by a fan, who has promised to preserve and protect this piece of movie history.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Based on the shocking memoir by the former stockbroker and trader Jordan Belfort, Martin Scorsese’s 2013 blockbuster, The Wolf of Wall Street is a black comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Jordan Belfort and Jonah Hill. The controversial film simultaneously glorifies and condemns the drug-fuelled, double-dealing, high-flying escapades of Wall Street traders in the 1980s, and met with a mixed public reception for its representations of Belfort and his associates.
Jordan Belfort's mansion, Long Island, USA
Since the film focuses significantly on Belfort ‘living large’, what better way to represent his grandiose lifestyle than with a splashy estate? Scorsese found the perfect filming location in this opulent 15,000-square-foot Long Island mansion, set on five acres of lush landscaping. Situated just an hour outside of New York City, the home boasts just about every luxury feature you can imagine, including a wine cellar, brick pizza oven and a hot tub room.
Jordan Belfort's mansion, Long Island, USA
The three-storey estate boasts six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as numerous opulent spaces for entertaining, including a double-height family room with an enormous fireplace and French doors leading out onto the patio. Easily as one might be able to imagine Margot and Leo living in luxury in these spaces, in reality, only the home’s exterior was used for the film. The infamous pool party scenes were shot on the property’s expertly manicured grounds, which include the saltwater pool, multiple terraces and an ornamental pond with a waterfall.
Jordan Belfort's mansion, Long Island, USA
Despite its countless luxury features, the home was last placed on the market for just £8.3 million ($10m), a fact which surprised fans expecting a heftier sum. The home was last listed in 2021 for £12 million ($14.5m), but after failing to secure a buyer, the price plummeted by a few million in April 2022. Now off the market, the home appears to have sold to someone looking to live out your wildest Wall Street fantasies.

Cruella
Disney’s recent reimagining of the classic 101 Dalmatians story, Cruella takes us back to the height of London’s fashion scene in the 1960s, and introduces us to a young, ambitious Cruella before her dog-hating days, played by Emma Stone. As Cruella faces off against her nemesis, the brutal fashion designer ‘the Baroness’, played by Emma Thompson, viewers are treated to quintessentially English backdrops which range from the iconic Liberty store to an elegant country estate and a cosy Bloomsbury flat, which has recently come to the market…
Cruella's Bloomsbury flat, London, UK
Originally designed by celebrated architect Thomas Cubitt in 1822, the flat sits above Wolburn Walk, London’s first purpose-built pedestrian shopping street, which is crammed with bow-fronted Dickensian buildings. With so much period charm, it’s no surprise that the street is a favourite with film directors and has featured in several recent flicks, including The Aeronauts, Pennyworth, Poirot, Christopher Robin and, most recently, Living. The flat sits in the middle of this storied street, hidden behind an original panelled door complete with a brass knocker.

A set of doors open off the living room onto both a study and a roof terrace, while light pours in from the French casement windows set in a depressed arch, decorated with original railings that create a Juliet balcony over the shop window below. The further stories house the bedrooms, which boast a range of quirky features including a working gas stove, a Venetian casement window, and original wood panelling. Despite these fabulous period features, however, the Grade II-listed home has been priced at just £2.3 million ($2.9m).

Up a flight of stairs, the quirky flat offers four bedrooms and two bathrooms over five characterful levels and a total of 2,500 square feet of space. The ground floor houses the kitchen and dining area lit by a large picture window, as well as a TV room at the rear which offers access out to a private patio garden. Up one flight of stairs, the main living area boasts original windows, shutters and a fireplace.

Mean Girls
Another cult classic that holds a special place in most millennial hearts, Mean Girls shaped the vocabulary and vernacular of an entire generation and remains in the zeitgeist today in the form of a successful Broadway musical. With an all-star cast including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Tina Fey, the film transports us back to high school, where an elite clique known as ‘the Plastics’ makes all the rules, until one math-loving outsider decides to rock the boat.
Regina George's house, Toronto, Canada
The leader of the plastics is the ultimate queen bee, Regina George, a privileged pretty girl whose wealthy parents facilitate her every whim. Of course, Regina had to have a spectacular house, and this whopping 18,000-square-foot Toronto mega-mansion just about fit the bill. Planted on a sprawling two-acre lot, this immense home is constructed entirely of solid stone and boasts an impressive cobblestone front drive and columned entryway. While only the exterior was used to represent Regina’s home for the film, its interiors are definitely still worth a look.
Regina George's house, Toronto, Canada
Upstairs, the luxurious main bedroom features a seating area, dressing room, and a seven-piece ensuite, while downstairs in the home’s finished basement you’ll find staff quarters, a wine cellar, rec room, spa, gym, and another kitchen. Further luxurious features can be found outside, including a pool, cabana, multiple terraces, a tennis court, and plenty of lush rolling lawns. The property was last on the market for a cool CAD $23.8 million (£14.2m / $17.4m), but was quickly snapped up by a buyer who was ready to live like Regina George.

With nine bedrooms in the main house, four more in the guesthouse, and a total of 14 bathrooms, this property certainly offers plenty of space for hosting your nearest and dearest. The mansion’s interiors are characterised by opulence and grandeur, epitomised by the cathedral-ceilinged entryway with marble tiled floors and a double staircase. Other living spaces include a double-height family room with a marble fireplace, media room, pool table/games room, formal dining room, formal living room, wood-panelled study, and an eat-in kitchen complete with quartz countertops and Wolf appliances.

To Catch a Thief
Starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly and featuring swoon-worthy costumes designed by Edith Head, To Catch a Thief is considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time. The 1955 Hitchcock classic follows John Robbie, a retired cat burglar, who finds himself entangled in a theft which he, for once, has not committed. The entire film is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Riviera and features a host of stunning homes, one of which was recently brought to market.
Sotheby's International Realty
John Robie's villa, Nice, France
Last listed with Sotheby’s International Realty for the princely sum of €3.6 million ( £3.2m / $3.9m), the stunning Villa Les Bolovens dates to 1935 and is situated in the hills of Saint-Jeannet on the Côte d’Azur, a 30-minute drive from the city of Nice. The home’s distinctive exterior of rugged stone and climbing purple flowers inspired Alfred Hitchcock when he was location scouting for his Oscar-winning film, and while the interior shots were all done in a studio in Hollywood, the home’s exterior features prominently throughout the film.

John Robie's villa, Nice, France
Arguably the film’s most iconic moment, the legendary kiss between Grant and Kelly, was shot on the villa’s balcony, with the glamour of the two stars rivalled only by the breathtaking views of the Riviera behind them. There are in fact multiple terraces throughout the property, which is carefully designed for optimal indoor/outdoor living, the better to enjoy the proffered views of the surrounding hills, Nice, and the sea below.

The home boasts seven bedrooms and 4,575 square feet of living space, all painstakingly preserved by the current owners to maintain the property’s historic charm. The open-plan area has a combined living room, dining room, and study, and a spacious, rustic-style kitchen, both offering spectacular views. The 1.3 acres grounds also include a separate guest house, a large pool and a leafy dining pergola. The entire property was an incredible opportunity for some lucky buyer to own a piece of golden-age Hollywood history.
Hocus Pocus
As far as Halloween movies go, Hocus Pocus is up there with the best of them. The original hit our screens in 1993 and follows a comedic trio of witches, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, who are inadvertently brought back from the dead when teenager, Max Dennison, lights the Black Flame Candle on Halloween night. Two decades after the first movie was released, Hocus Pocus 2 landed on Disney+ and in celebration, the iconic Salem cottage was recreated...

Pet Sematary
Stephen King’s 1983 horror novel Pet Sematary was one of the author's most bleak stories even he was reportedly terrified by it, while the tale dismayed his friends and family. Recreated twice on screen, in 1989 and 2019, the chilling story is now a cult classic. Historic Blue Hill barn castle, the location for one particular scene in the film, has hit the market at £1.3 million ($1.6m).
Pet Sematary Barncastle Hotel, Maine, USA
Current owner Isaac Robbins was said to have jumped at the chance to buy Barncastle in 2007, having visited a friend there as a child and marvelling at the sprawling blue house with arches and turrets. Isaac and his wife, Lori, then spent the subsequent 15 years working to transform the home into a hotel, restaurant, and music venue.
Pet Sematary Barncastle Hotel, Maine, USA
Built in 1884 by Boston architect and Blue Hill native George Clough, the 9,000-square-foot hotel is a mixture of old New England architecture and features that might better belong on a medieval castle. Barncastle's five rooms host some eccentric designs, including the foyer’s split staircase and a rather dramatic internal balcony.
Pet Sematary Barncastle Hotel, Maine, USA
According to the Ellsworth American, a cocktail party scene from the 1989 version of Pet Sematary was shot in Barncastle, long before the current owners moved in. The unique inn is listed on the 1980 National Register of Historic Places and could be all yours ideal for potential landlords and Stephen King fans alike.
Edward Scissorhands
Quirky and life-affirming, Edward Scissorhands is one of the most memorable movies from the 90s. The classic flick follows an artificial man with scissors for hands (played by Johnny Depp) whose discovery panics the locals in a small, suburban town. Over time, however, the residents realise that despite his unusual appearance, Edward is actually a very sweet guy with lots to give – namely, free haircuts! Far from being a set, the movie was actually shot on a cul-de-sac in Lutz, Florida.

The Boggs' home, Florida, USA
The main property from the film, home to Kim Boggs (Winona Ryder), the love interest of Edward, is actually real and can be found on the very street shown in the film. The former owners of the property transformed the unassuming bungalow into a superfan shrine – and you won’t quite believe the lengths they went to, to bring their favourite film to life. The home’s front yard even features topiary shrubs, as if Edward has just popped by to give them a snip.

Step through the front door and you’ll find décor and memorabilia dedicated to the Tim Burton classic. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home features an open-plan living room, dining space, and kitchen that hasn't been touched since the house was built in 1989, just a year before Edward Scissorhands was filmed. The wild and weird home was listed for sale in July 2022 for £492,400 ($600k) – which is a fairly sizable asking price, considering the property's small size and unusual décor. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it failed to sell and was later removed from the market.

Previously on the market for £452,200 ($551k), the home operated as a bed and breakfast until 2012 and still has its commercial kitchen. However, with towering 15-foot-high ceilings, a grand staircase, and a stunning wrap-around porch, it could make the perfect family home.

Mrs. Doubtfire
Released in 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire remains one of the world's most beloved comedies. Directed by Chris Columbus, the movie starred the late, great Robin Williams as a desperate dad who, having separated from his wife, pines for his children. The Home Alone house, Chicago, USA
Almost as iconic as Kevin McCallister’s (Macaulay Culkin) bathroom scream scene, the Home Alone house has long been an obsession for movie buffs. It was here that Kevin rigged his booby traps in order to defend his home against burglar duo The Wet Bandits. The gigantic colonial-style mansion can be found in the sought-after Chicago suburb of Winnetka and is every bit as grand in real life as it is in the movie only now the plaid décor has been given a modern facelift.
The Home Alone house, Chicago, USA
Built in 1921, the property spans 4,250 square feet and offers four bedrooms and three bathrooms. As one of the most memorable rooms in the whole house, the hallway played host to a number of key scenes, including Kevin's stair sledging session and our first meeting with burglar, Harry (Joe Pesci). In the movie, the entrance hall was kitted out with a blood red stair runner and loud William Morris-inspired wallpaper, but is now an elegant space fit for modern living.
The Home Alone house, Chicago, USA
The kitchen was another important room in the house and acted as the main location for many of Kevin's finest baited traps. Thanks to a chic makeover, the room is now equal parts practical and eye-catching. Every room still benefits from classic period touches, too, including hardwood floors and oversized sash windows. In 2012, the iconic property sold for £1.3 million ($1.6m), after almost a year on the market.

Despite undergoing a thorough makeover in 2005, the house still retains much of its character and plenty of details keen movie fans will remember all too well.

Thankfully, the renovation has removed any signs of dated retro décor. Now refined and traditional in style, the home's 3,791-square-foot interior is still in need of a little modernisation but remnants of its movie heritage can still be seen in the dining room, where many scenes unfolded. Original picture rails, timber panelling, and decorative chandeliers all remain intact since the home's disco days.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
For many, Harry Potter is one of the greatest sagas of all time. With eight blockbuster movies, the Wizarding World has so far raked in £7.1 billion ($8.6b), according to Forbes. Thanks to a multimillion-dollar budget, each film offered spectacular film sets that brought the story magically to life, and while the Weasley family's tumbledown home was very much smoke and mirrors, some of the franchise's locations were actually real...
Harry's childhood home, Suffolk, UK
Potterheads will remember this iconic home from the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, the penultimate movie in the much-loved franchise. In the film, this historic pad was used as the location for Harry's childhood home. In fact, film makers used the real-life medieval town of Lavenham, Suffolk, to create the wizarding town of Godric’s Hollow, the place where Harry was born and where his parents were killed at the hands of evil Lord Voldemort.
Harry's childhood home, Suffolk, UK
The historic timber-framed house dates back to the 14th century and it is now one of the most photographed houses in England, thanks to its wizarding connection. It also happens to be one of the most historically significant medieval properties in Britain. Known locally as De Vere House, it once belonged to the aristocratic De Vere family, who lived here between the 14th and 17th centuries. Though light-filled and chic, it appears almost untouched since their day.
Harry's childhood home, Suffolk, UK
In the film, the property appeared hauntingly derelict, but in reality, the De Vere House is chic and cosy with spacious rooms and plenty of eye-catching period details. Grade I-listed, the home has six bedrooms, three reception rooms, and four bathrooms, while carved timber ceilings, wonky stone fireplaces, lead mullion windows, and a medieval staircase add to its magic. In 2018, the period property sold for £950,000 ($1.2m) and is now a luxury bed and breakfast.

Since many of the scenes in this Steven Spielberg-produced film required crumbling walls and derelict rooms, a set was used where needed. Much like the characters from the movie, the previous owners took on a huge renovation project which cost millions and took four years to complete. Now, the pad is effortlessly sophisticated, thanks to polished hardwood floors, ornate crown mouldings, marble fireplaces, and gilded bronze fixtures.

Bull Durham
One of the most popular sports movies of all time, Bull Durham won over our hearts with its brilliant script. Released in 1988, the film starred Susan Sarandon as independent woman, Annie Savoy, and Kevin Costner as veteran baseball pitcher, Crash Davis. The romantic comedy was filmed in and around Durham, North Carolina, and Annie's house can still be seen to this day, in the heart of town.

This picture-perfect abode was Annie's house in the classic film and it has become infamous in the city for its star turn. It was inside these walls that Costner delivered some of the most iconic lines in romantic comedy history. Now a registered Durham Historic Landmark, the 3,598-square-foot property last sold in July 2020 for just under £830,400 ($1.1m).

With four bedrooms and four bathrooms, the pad is slightly more modern and stylish than it was in the film. Back in 1988, the home offered green kitchen units and yellow tiles, a plethora of bold floral wallpapers, and plenty of net curtains. Today, the house is stripped back and filled with natural light, thanks to a simple colour palette and chic furnishings.

The Queen Anne-style home was built in 1880 and still maintains many of its original architectural details, including 11-foot ceilings with intricate medallions, stained-glass windows, elaborate millwork, decorative fireplaces, and timber pocket doors. Thankfully, the home's distinctive kitchen has been replaced with streamlined countertops, exposed brickwork and all-white cabinetry. There's also a wraparound porch outside, where Annie appears in the opening scenes of the movie.
