As if divorce weren’t bad enough, it has recently been reported that Sophie Turner is suing Joe Jonas for "wrongful detention" of their two children in New York, demanding he return their passports so that they can move with her to England. While Jonas is seeking joint custody of their daughters, Turner states the couple had previously agreed to settle in England, having found their 'forever home' in Oxford, as recently as July.
The couple had been living a largely nomadic lifestyle for some time, bouncing between residences across the UK and the US to accommodate their busy work schedules. Turner has claimed in her legal petition that Jonas incorrectly cited in his divorce application that the children, who have dual citizenship, had been living in Florida for six months prior to the split. Turner’s receipts reveal that the children had in fact only spent roughly 11 weeks in the Miami rental, and hadn’t lived anywhere longer than four weeks at a stretch.
The BBC has reported that, according to Turner’s petition, the couple had decided in April to make the UK their permanent base, planning to buy a home and send their children to English schools. The pair had reportedly agreed that England would be a safe place in which to raise their family, with the added benefit of being close to Turner’s parents. The home they had selected was a charming Grade II-listed property in the village of Wallingford, Oxford, where author Agatha Christie spent most of her life.
Sadly, the couple’s fairytale future was not to be, and on 6 September, Sophie posted a statement on Instagram saying: "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually agreed to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children." However, Turner has since stated that Jonas filed alone on 1 September following an argument on the singer's 34th birthday and that Turner only found out about the filing four days later through the media.
While the celebrity split was as much of a shock to the public as it must have been for Sophie, in retrospect, there may have been some signs of the coming separation. Despite having invested in a pretty significant flip, the A-list couple recently offloaded the Miami mansion for $15 million (£12.3m), a $2 million (£1.6m) price drop from their initial ask. However, having purchased the property just over two years ago for $11 million (£9m), they still made a profit on the upgraded estate, which will presumably now be divided as they prepare to split their assets. Let's take a look at the house sale that should have served as a warning of what was about to come...
While the news of the divorce was just made official, there have been signs for those who watch the real estate market. The former couple sold their Miami mansion in mid-August, but it had been listed for sale since late 2022. They also took a price cut, indicating they were very keen to find a buyer. British Sophie had confessed to feeling homesick in the past, saying in an interview with Elle in April 2023: "I miss England so much. The people, the attitude, everything... I really love living in America but, for my mental health, I have to be around my friends and my family. And also for my daughter – I would love her to get the education and school life that I was so lucky to have. England would ideally be the final destination, but [Joe] might take quite a bit of convincing..."
Previously owned by Cuban-born singer Willy Chirino, the Miami home was built in 1980 and still has some amazing original features such as the statement coral stone used in this grand living space. In the listing photos, you can see how Joe and Sophie changed the house with the help of interior designer, Sarah Ivory, adding a tropical vertical garden. Spread over 10,400 square feet, the house was built for entertaining, with open living spaces and dramatic 30-foot ceilings. The main lounge is now ablaze in bright jewel tones, with tufted, low-slung furnishings, a plum-coloured silk rug, a lavender chandelier and a gold-toned coffee table.
The dining room also had a complete overhaul with a vibrant hand-painted, jungle-themed de Gournay print wallpaper, complemented by the green bamboo chairs and Venetian glass chandelier, plus a climate-controlled adjoining wine cellar.
Though still light-filled and spacious, the master bedroom is now a soft blue and features a rainbow chandelier. The asymmetrical headboard adds yet another pop of colour to the room, but the other furnishings are sleek and simple, perhaps to prevent the space from feeling over-cluttered.
The home's interior design was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, which is clear to see with the indoor gardens, soaring ceilings and walls of windows. Jam-packed with amenities, the home boasts a games room with a pool table on the lower floor. Other perks include a dual-sided bar that allows hosts to serve drinks both inside and out, and a cosy fireplace.
Filled with light, the couple also added a state-of-the-art kitchen, with brand-new high-end appliances, a sleek design, a marble centre island, bar seating and hardwood floors, which run through most of the lavish home.
The home also boasts not one, but two pools, one for adults and the other geared more towards children, which would have been perfect for daughters Willa and 'D.J', born in July 2022. While a low coral wall offers privacy, the dock provides access to both the bay and the open waters of the Atlantic, in case the new residents feel like setting sail!
The house is just a stone's throw away from Miami's Indian Creek Island, also known as 'Billionaire Bunker Island', which is home to a whole host of celebrity neighbours such as Ivanka Trump and Tom Brady. Even with the $2 (£1.6m) million price drop, the sale of their Miami home still gave the former couple a reasonable profit, which they will likely invest in their future individual homes as they prepare to go their separate ways. But as the fight for custody of their children ensues, let's see what unfolds...

On Tuesday, 5 September 2023, Joe filed for divorce, claiming his marriage to Sophie was "irretrievably broken", but it wasn't always acrimony and lawsuits for the famous couple. Engaged in 2017 and married in 2019 in a small Las Vegas ceremony, Joe and Sophie later welcomed two daughters. Willa, three, and a 1-year-old, whose name the couple has chosen to keep private, although recent divorce paperwork has revealed her initials to be D.J.
Shortly after tying the knot, Joe and Sophie snapped up this newly built mansion, paying $14.1 million (£11.6m) for the luxury property. Nestled in the sought-after enclave of Royal Oaks, in the LA neighbourhood of Encino, the white brick and wood-clad mansion is said to be just three miles from Nick Jonas' home, which he shares with his wife, Priyanka Chopra.
The grand, double-height hallway acts as a central area and leads through to countless living spaces. With 15,000 square feet of interior space, the property is grand and luxurious in equal measure. Designed by Jae Omar Design, the house is fitted with sophisticated materials and boasts a palette of aged natural woods and imported stones.
The high-end kitchen would be perfect for Jonas Brother gatherings. It opens to the main family room and has been fitted with walnut cabinets and dark grey stone countertops, as well as a seven-seat snack bar, that would just about fit the band and their partners. There’s also a prep kitchen for catering events, as well as an informal dining space that spills out to an alfresco sitting area.
The house features 11 bathrooms and nine bedrooms, all of which are equipped with high-end furnishings and private balconies overlooking the tranquil garden. The master suite is a private oasis with a stunning cathedral ceiling, sitting area, custom-fitted walk-in-wardrobe, dressing room and wrap-around deck, all shaded by a canopy of trees.
During their time in the property, Joe and Sophie are said to have undertaken a number of upgrades, making the space their very own haven. As well as plenty of formal living areas, there’s now a beautiful spa, a spacious gym and a state-of-the-art movie theatre, making this pad perfect for work and play.
Shielded by trees, the ultra-private home sits on nearly an acre of land and offers a sheltered dining loggia, a built-in grilling area and an unsheltered deck that surrounds a firepit. There's also a sociable lounge, a two-bedroom guest house, an aquarium, a cigar humidor, a fog machine, disco lights, a DJ station, a four-car garage, a putting green, an outdoor cinema and a glistening swimming pool. In June of 2021, the pair put the home on the market with an asking price just shy of $16.8 million (£13.8m). According to the listing, it eventually sold for $15.2 million (£12.5m).
As well as living on the West Coast, the couple were also partial to city living. In 2018, they reportedly bought an apartment in New York City for $5.5 million (£4.5m). However, in July 2020 they listed the home for $6.5 million (£5.3m), before slashing the price in September to $5.9 million (£4.8m). They were later reportedly forced to reduce the price to $5.4 million (£4.4m) after failing to secure a buyer. It's not known if they ever sold it. The couple was reportedly spotted house-hunting in New York in November 2022, but no purchases were made.
The sophisticated condo isn't short of luxury amenities and comes with its very own private lift, which leads through to a formal hallway and open-plan living space with high ceilings and stained white oak floorboards.
Spread over 2,900 square feet, it has everything the couple would need, including the dining room, which is conveniently located opposite the kitchen. Bathed in light from the windows, it's the perfect spot to enjoy a lavish meal overlooking the city streets below.
A chef's dream, the all-white kitchen has been fitted with state-of-the-art appliances and boasts luxury marble countertops and splashback. Perfect for city living the compact space also features a six-burner hob and a full-height wine cooler.
The three-bed, three-bath home also includes a master bedroom that has direct access to the terrace, as well as a huge walk-in wardrobe and a glamorous all-white ensuite bathroom.
The 1,500-square-foot terrace would have been a fun space for the young couple to entertain, although it's not completely private and is overlooked by neighbouring apartments. Situated in a state-of-the-art building, the new buyer will have access to a number of amenities including a 24-hour doorman, concierge service and a screening room.
In May 2014, two years before he met Sophie Turner, Joe started his own property journey by purchasing a house in West Hollywood for $2.6 million (£2.1m). The traditional-style home, which was built in 1923, is located just off the Sunset Strip and has nearly 2,900 square feet of living space.
The traditional-style home features an elegant eat-in kitchen, dining room, lounge and breakfast area, and media room. The main living space is stylish and comfortable with a curved ceiling, fireplace and French doors that lead outside.
With four bedrooms and five bathrooms, the home had plenty of space for the singer. This bedroom features a tall, vaulted ceiling and has a cosy but relaxed style of décor, with views out over the garden below.
The lush back garden is a private oasis with perfect landscaping, an alfresco dining area, a barbecue and a small swimming pool. Joe put the home on the market for $2.9 million (£2.4m) in October 2015 and sold it in November 2015 for close to the asking price.
After selling his house, the star was between properties and decided to rent out this Hollywood estate, which sits high on the summit of Los Angeles' Runyon Canyon. The modern home cost around $3,500 (£2.9k) per night to rent – enough to buy a whole house for some people! However, the home now appears to have been taken off the rental market.
The seven-bed, eight-and-a-half-bath home boasts open spaces, high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows – perfect for the bachelor lifestyle. The formal living space is surrounded by a small stone patio and comes complete with a fireplace and fully extending glass doors.
Hidden away from prying eyes up a gated private driveway, the home also features a guesthouse, movie theatre, state-of-the-art kitchen and a dining room. The master bedroom doesn't go without either and has an ensuite bathroom with dual sinks, a soaking tub and a shower.
Of course, the outside is just as lavish with a long swimming pool surrounded by comfortable outdoor furniture. A lawn sits around the corner with a barbecue and firepit, making it the perfect pad for entertaining.
In 2016, the same year he met his future ex-wife, Sophie, the singer purchased this farmhouse-style home in California for $3.7 million (£3m). Known as Sutton House, the 5,600-square-foot property is located in the popular Sherman Oaks area and has four bedrooms, a home cinema and a separate guest house.
The sleek and modern interior features wide-panelled oak floorboards that run through the adjoining living and dining rooms, both of which also have panelled ceilings. A grown-up purchase for Joe, the upmarket farmhouse was put back on the market in August 2018 for just shy of $3.4 million (£2.8m), almost a year and a half after he had proposed to Sophie Turner.
The jaw-dropping property has a modern, open-plan layout with a laid-back aesthetic. There are two guest bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms plus a junior master bedroom on the upper level. But the main master suite is the pièce de résistance with a cosy fireplace, lounge area and a private terrace, as well as an ensuite bathroom.
Outside also doesn't fall short with an outdoor heated pool, a manicured lawn, high hedges for privacy and a barn-style pool house. In February 2019 the home was finally sold for $3.7 million (£2.9m), which is the same as the purchase price.
As Joe hits the road with his brothers performing 'Five Albums. One Night. The World Tour', Sophie is now thought to be back in New York with her children after being spotted filming her new drama series, Joan, in London earlier this summer. It's not yet known where Sophie and Joe will choose to call home after their split but it will be extremely difficult to co-parent if they live in different time zones. Here's hoping they find an amicable resolution soon.
