Michael Jordan still can't sell his mansion after 11 years
Selling your house can be an incredibly stressful experience, especially if it's languished on the market for a while, something sports legend Michael Jordan knows all too well. Despite recently expanding his staggering net worth by some $3 billion (£2.3bn), following the sale of his majority share in the Charlotte Hornets, the former basketball player is still plagued by his unsold Illinois mansion, which Jordan has been trying to shift for some 11 years. A basketball legend
Noted as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan is one seriously wealthy man. In fact, according to Forbes, he's worth a staggering $2 billion (£1.6bn) as of July 2023, though that number is likely to rise in the wake of his recent multibillion-dollar business deal. The former NBA All-Star helped the Chicago Bulls claim six titles and enjoyed lucrative partnerships with the likes of Nike and Gatorade. Unsurprisingly then, given his success, Jordan has accumulated his fair share of luxurious homes over the years, including a rather impressive estate in the city of Highland Park, Illinois.
Long-time home
Michael Jordan has owned the palatial spread for over 30 years. He bought the 56,000-square-foot property back in 1991, paying $2 million (£1.6m) for the privilege. After living in the home for many years, the sports icon first attempted to offload the pad in 2012, placing a $29 million (£22.6m) price tag on it. A year later, Jordan dropped the price to $21 million (£16.3m) before lowering the price again to $16 million (£12.5m), according to the New York Post.
An unsellable estate?
The nine-bedroom, 15-bathroom spread was further reduced to just shy of $14.9 million (£11.6m) in 2015 and it's remained at the same price ever since without attracting a buyer. According to the ESPN documentary The Last Dance, not a single offer has been made on the house, so what is it that's deterring potential house hunters?
Personalised touches
Well, the luxurious home might be too bespoke. For example, the home's entrance gates are emblazoned with a huge '23', Jordan's former jersey number, so perhaps buyers have been put off by its personalised touches. The interior is high-end and ultra-modern thanks to a thorough renovation in 2009, which was likely undertaken in an attempt to seduce buyers. As well as expansive living rooms, the home also offers an infinity pool, putting green, tennis court and cigar room.
Extravagant sports facilities
Of course, there's also a full-size indoor basketball court and a gymnasium, which could deter buyers with no interest in sports. According to the New York Post, the property also comes equipped with other lavish home features, including a movie theatre, a wine cellar and a poker room. Still up for grabs after 11 years, this might be the most unsellable celebrity home of all time. However, while the house hasn't managed to attract a buyer, it has attracted interest of the wrong kind recently...
Trespassers wreak havoc
Perhaps due to its lingering status on the market, the misfortunate property fell prey to a teenage opportunist or two. On 4 April 2023, 18-year-old Raiden K. Hagedorn of Mundelein, Illinois took his chance to break into the basketball legend’s residence alongside an unidentified minor according to reports. After neighbours alerted the authorities, the duo were found inside Jordan’s home by the Highland Park Police Department, arrested and charged with criminal trespass and two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property. Pictured here, Lake County sheriff's deputies and K-9 units survey the estate.

Jordan makes a major business move
Jordan’s luck clearly sits better in the basketball world. The star has six NBA champion titles under his belt and until recently, a lucrative stake in North Carolina's NBA team. Buying the majority share in the Charlotte Hornets for $275 million (£214m) in 2010, Jordan agreed to sell a minority stake in 2019 for $1.5 million (£1.2m). But more recently he has decided to sell his majority share, with the NBA’s board of governors approving the sale to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall. But how much is the deal worth?

$3 billion deal approved
Expected to be finalised in August, with Jordan maintaining a minority investment, the Hornets' stake has been valued at approximately $3 billion (£2.3bn) according to league sources. The deal sees the end of an era, as Magic Jordan says goodbye to his 13-year ownership of the team and the NBA loses its only African American majority owner. Once the sale is complete, the sporting legend will have made 11 times his initial investment. However, while his business dealings may be going from strength to strength, His Airness is still yet to secure a buyer for his unsellable Illinois home. Here’s hoping Jordan's luck is about to change...

Derek Jeter
Derek Jeter may have the golden touch when it comes to a bat and ball, but it doesn't seem to extend to his home-selling ability. The former pro baseball player enjoyed a 20-year career at the New York Yankees, winning them the World Series five times. However, his jaw-dropping castle-style home has failed to win any buyers and is still languishing on the market almost five years after it was first listed.
Derek Jeter’s New York lakeside castle
Described in the listing as a "magical property", this six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion lies on the shores of New York's Greenwood Lake and is on the market for a cool $6.5 million (£5m). Bult in 1915, the four-acre property is best described as a colonial estate meets fantasy pirate island. On and off the market since 2018, the unique abode was originally listed for $14.8 million (£11.5m) before it was knocked down to its current price. It was even put up for auction in 2022 but failed to attract a buyer.
Derek Jeter’s New York lakeside castle
The Baseball Hall of Fame inductee began renovating the huge house back in 2003 when he bought it for $425,000 (£331k) and has "lovingly restored" it "beyond its original grandeur". The new owner – if one is ever found – will be able to enjoy beautiful lake views from most of the rooms, as well as from both turrets and the rooftop. New residents needn't worry about climbing the stairs either – there's an elevator to save creaky knees.
Derek Jeter’s New York lakeside castle
The home boasts an impressive four indoor kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances, "to please even the most demanding chefs". There's even a FIFTH kitchen outside, complete with wood burning fireplace. There are several beautiful spots to entertain guests, including a large patio, games room, great room and a pool house with its own built-in bar, one of several scattered around the property.
Derek Jeter’s New York lakeside castle
It's the outside amenities that really set this mansion apart from the rest. Not only does it have bags of personality, but it also offers a guest house, pool house, infinity pool, lush gardens, a boat house and even a lagoon. Oh, and a replica of the Statue of Liberty. As listing agent Diane Mitchell puts it, there really is "too much to describe". With so much on offer, it's hard to see why this house hasn't yet hit a home run.

John Travolta
This multi-talented actor, dancer and famous Scientologist has a wealth of acting and producing successes to write home about over the course of his illustrious 50-year career in Hollywood. Alongside Box Office hits and an Academy Award, John Travolta has amassed a $250 million (£194m) fortune and an impressive property portfolio – including a mansion in Clearwater, Florida near the Scientology headquarters. But one particular piece of Travolta real estate has proven difficult to shift, however, perhaps due to its eclectic interior…

John Travolta's Maine Island estate
The Saturday Night Fever star purchased this expansive Maine Island home in 1991 for an undisclosed sum with new wife Kelly Preston as the perfect hideaway from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Spanning 10,830 square feet, the 20-bedroom home was built in 1903 by architects Peabody and Stearns. In February 2021, less than a year after Kelly's death, Travolta put their sprawling family home on the market to surprisingly little interest. Let’s take a look inside…

Once inside, a smorgasbord of colours and patterns adorn the living spaces, creating a maximalist country-style aesthetic. Ornate rugs, striped and floral chairs and framed portraits adorn green walls, while a wood-panelled bar sits in one corner brimming with glassware and even a decorative ship.

Channelling cottage-core interiors, each room is kitted out with sunny palettes and clashing patterned furnishings with a multitude of draping curtains surrounding Tudor Revival window panels. Travolta told Architectural Digest that he had always wanted a house large enough to accommodate the family at Christmas. Indeed, after moving into the property in 1991, the couple swiftly redecorated the 42-room house and hosted 50 guests for the holidays.

The Shingle-style house was listed for $5 million (£3.9m), but it's since been removed from the market. According to the listing, the third floor hosts four themed bedrooms, a school house, library, a diner and a performing stage for endless entertainment. Meanwhile, this cosy floral suite features furnished armchairs and a fireplace, along with vast windows from which to admire the property's 42 acres, complete with a swimming pool, deep water dock and beach access.

Mary J Blige
Nine-time Grammy-award winning 'Queen of Hip Hop’ Mary J Blige has amassed a creaking cabinet of awards and a small fortune of $20 million (£15.6m) since her career began in the 1990s. But while the 'Family Affair' hit-maker knows how to turn a profit from her music, she’s had less success in real estate…
Mary J Blige's Cresskill, New Jersey mansion
In 2001, Blige snapped up this six-bedroom New Jersey mansion for just under $2 million (£1.6m) complete with its own gym, swimming pool and guest quarters. Unfortunately, the otherwise attractive Cresskill residence has been on and off the market for more than three-and-a-half years. The 7,000-square-foot home was last up for grabs for $3 million (£2.3m) but no doubt will be popping up again...
Mary J Blige's Saddle River, New Jersey mansion
But that’s not the only New Jersey estate that the 'Mary Jane' singer-songwriter struggled to sell. This luxury, French-style manse is found in nearby Saddle River, complete with 13,856 square feet of interiors. Splashing out $12.3 million (£9.6m) on the 25-room home in 2008, Blige spent 10 years attempting to sell up.

The eight-bedroom, high-ceilinged mansion, which features a home cinema and an elevator, first graced the property pages in 2010. In 2015, the Saddle River estate was listed at $13 million (£10m), but eventually sold for just $5.5 million (£4.3m) a whole decade later in 2020.

With its plush living spaces and state-of-the-art amenities, we’re not sure why the so-called French manor lounged on the market for so long. Alongside the 14-seater home cinema, you’ll also find a top-floor owner’s suite with views out across a pool, an indoor basketball court and a wine cellar with its own tasting room.

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez released her debut single 'If You Had My Love' in 1999 and since then, the proud New Yorker has fast become one of the world's most successful music stars – not to mention an award-winning actor. Today, her net worth is thought to be $400 million (£312m) and she spends her spare cash very wisely, snapping up lavish homes across America. Yet the singer's Manhattan penthouse is currently causing her somewhat of a headache...
Jennifer Lopez's New York penthouse
Jennifer Lopez bought this mind-blowing penthouse apartment in 2014 after her divorce from Marc Anthony was finalised. The star put down just over $20 million (£15.6m) for the 6,500-square-foot spread, which occupies the entire top floor of The Whitman building, located just across the road from Madison Square Park in midtown Manhattan. Accessible via a private elevator, the plush pad is every bit as stylish as J.Lo herself.
Jennifer Lopez's New York penthouse
Light-filled and modern, there's also a touch of pre-war glamour about the property, since The Whitman was originally built in 1924. Spread across two floors, the home features 15 rooms, including a grand living room with oak floors and a 12-foot ceiling, a gourmet kitchen and a dining room that would be the perfect space for the pop star to host VIP guests.
Jennifer Lopez's New York penthouse
There are four bedrooms and the master offers a private dressing room and two bathrooms, one of which features a crystal chandelier and a soaking tub. The penthouse includes 3,000 square feet of outdoor space, encompassing a huge terrace with idyllic views over the park, plus its own putting green. The monthly building fees are around $20,000 (£15.6k), so perhaps this has something to do with why the penthouse has failed to secure a buyer since it was listed back in October 2017.

J.Lo first put the pad on the market for just under $27 million (£21m). After failing to attract a buyer, the price tag was reduced by $2 million (£1.6m) two years later in 2019. The apartment has since been mysteriously removed from the market. According to the New York Post, the property was listed for four years and received no offers.

Frank Sinatra
Considered to be one of the greatest musical artists of the 20th century, Frank Sinatra sold more than 150 million records worldwide during his career. He also starred in hit movies such as High Society and Guys and Dolls. As well as owning a stunning desert dwelling in Palm Springs, where he is said to have hosted plenty of VIP soirées, Sinatra also owned a dreamy mountain retreat in the wilds of Coachella Valley, California.

Sometimes it's all too easy to understand why certain homes languish on the market, but when it comes to Frank Sinatra's mountain hideaway it isn't quite so clear. With jaw-dropping views, seven acres of land, a cool mid-century interior and a (fairly) reasonable price tag, we can't quite figure out why the crooner's former home has seemingly failed to seduce a buyer.

Villa Maggio was Sinatra's long-time home and it has been on and off the market for some 15 years without ever securing a sale. The property was commissioned by Sinatra back in 1967 and many have suggested he was inspired by his hit song 'Let's Get Away From It All'. The estate was named after Sinatra's character, Angelo Maggio, in the 1953 movie From Here to Eternity and boasts a five-bedroom main house, a three-bedroom guesthouse, a pool house and a resort-style pool.

Other highlights include the home's illuminated tennis court and helipad. Sinatra is said to have lived in the property for more than a decade and over the years it's been listed and reduced countless times. According to Realtor's property history, it hit the market in 2007 for just under $5 million (£3.9m), then in 2008 and 2009 it was marketed for $4.8 million (£3.7m). In 2015, the price was dropped even lower, to just over $3.9 million (£3m), but again no buyer was found.

Despite its former famous owner, the property has seemingly become unsellable. The home's remote location, high above the desert, has been blamed for the lack of interest, but the city of Palm Desert is less than 30 minutes away. We're still none the wiser why this home has become so undesirable. While Sinatra’s mid-century retreat was removed from sale in August 2022, it now seems to be back on the market for just shy of $4 million (£3.1m) – let's see if someone snaps it up this time.

Erika Jayne
Reality TV star Erika Jayne rose to fame thanks to the success of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, yet the star's separation from ex-husband Thomas Girardi and the scandal surrounding the pair's finances has definitely led to more than a few news headlines in recent years. Having faced a number of legal issues over the past two years, the former couple has been trying to shift their one-time home as part of Girardi's ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.

Erika Jayne's Pasadena estate
Girardi bought the stunning estate in Pasadena, California in 1980 for a mere $1.3 million (£1m). Two decades later, he married Erika Jayne and the pair made the historic house their home. Fans of Real Housewives have been given a glimpse inside the property over the years, but all that came to an end when the duo went their separate ways in November 2020, when Erika filed for divorce.

The pair had no choice but to sell off their long-term home following allegations of embezzlement and fraud, not to mention spiralling legal fees. The 10,277-square-foot residence was built in 1928 and is every bit as stunning as you might expect a Real Housewives' home to be. Described by the listing agents, Ted Clark & Heather Lillard, as "Old World opulence", the historic home is grand, dramatic and lavishly decorated.

The four-bedroom, nine-bathroom house boasts a stunning interior with solid bronze front doors, a dramatic walnut-panelled gallery, a lavish living room with an ornate coffered ceiling, a formal dining room with silk wallpaper, a library and a massive master suite with dual dressing rooms. There’s also a small chapel and a three-car garage kitted out with iron doors, a vaulted ceiling and chandeliers.

Of course, things are equally as impressive outside. The nearly two-acre garden features elegant verandas, lush landscaping, a rose garden, historic fountains, a swimming pool and a chandelier-lit pavilion. After starting divorce proceedings, Erika Jayne and Tom Girardi attempted to offload the property for $13 million (£10m) in May 2021. The reality stars then reduced the pad numerous times, until it finally sold earlier this year for $8 million (£6.2m). However, the Pasadena estate has now popped up as a rental property, with a hefty monthly fee of $38,000 (£29k). How's that for a celebrity rental opportunity?

Celine Dion
Canadian singer Celine Dion rose to fame thanks to smash hit singles including 'The Power Of Love', 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' and the iconic Titanic soundtrack, 'My Heart Will Go On'. In 2021, the starlet made Forbes' America's Self-Made Women list, with a net worth now reaching $800 million (£622m). So, inevitably, Dion has spent some of her millions on lavish homes, including a sprawling vacation retreat in Jupiter Island, Florida.
Sotheby's International Realty

The singer purchased the estate back in early 2008 for just over $7 million (£5.4m) and set about commissioning a sprawling, Bahamian-inspired mansion, which was completed in 2010. The lavish holiday home comes equipped with 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, as well as 415 feet of beach frontage.

The beautiful beach house is made up of a vast main home and five separate pavilions, but that's not all. As well as seriously luxurious living spaces, the estate is home to two ocean-view verandas, a tennis pavilion outfitted with a golf range simulator, a pool house, an outdoor kitchen, a beachside cabana with a massage room, three geothermal-heated swimming pools, a commercial-grade water slide and a four-car garage.
Sotheby's International Realty

It's thought that Dion first attempted to sell the property in 2013 for a cool $72.5 million (£56.4m), but according to Realtor's property records, she dropped the price to $45.5 million (£35.4m), then $38.5 million (£30m) in January 2017. After subsequent cuts, it finally sold in April 2017 for $28 million (£21.8m) after four years on the market.

It's likely the home's scale and price deterred many buyers, but perhaps the local annual taxes also played a part. According to Dirt, the property racks up fees that exceed $350,000 (£272k) a year. As far as celebrity homes go, Celine Dion's is certainly one of the most extravagant we've ever seen.

Pierce Brosnan
Best known for playing 007 in four movies of the James Bond franchise, Pierce Brosnan has been in the limelight since the 1980s. Today, the Irish-American actor has an estimated net worth of around $200 million (£155m), so it's really no wonder he has plenty of cash going spare to put down on lavish pieces of real estate. Yet it's the Mamma Mia! star's luxurious holiday retreat that has really made headlines.
Pierce Brosnan's beachfront Malibu mansion
Spread across an acre of beachfront in Malibu, California, the palatial property is jaw-dropping – but so is its price tag. Previously listed for $100 million (£77.8m), which is half of the actor's overall net worth, the house was likely unattainable for many looking to buy real estate in the area, yet it's not hard to see the reasoning behind its staggering price tag. Opulent, expansive and filled with unbelievable extras, the Malibu mansion is the stuff of real estate dreams.
Pierce Brosnan's beachfront Malibu mansion
The sprawling mansion encompasses almost 12,500 square feet and offers five bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and a host of beautiful living spaces. However, the home was tax assessed in 2022 and found to be worth $8.9 million (£6.9m), which may give a clue as to why it failed to meet its high price tag.
Pierce Brosnan's beachfront Malibu mansion
The actor and his wife, journalist Keely Shaye Smith, commissioned the property and the project took almost a decade to complete. The design was reportedly inspired by Brosnan's time spent in Thailand, during the filming of the 1997 Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies. Highlights include the home’s movie theatre, guesthouse, recording studio and spa, complete with saunas, a steam room, a plunge pool and a Japanese soaking tub.
Pierce Brosnan's beachfront Malibu mansion
While inside you’ll find light-filled, open-plan living spaces, outside you’ll find a beautiful backyard that makes the most of Malibu’s climate. From dining patios to cosy living rooms anchored by firepits, there are plenty of places to relax and host. There’s also a saltwater pool and, of course, 117 feet of dazzling beachfront. After 12 months and no offers, Brosnan removed the property from the market in September 2021 rather than lowering the asking price.
