Step inside the late Robin Williams' stunning San Francisco mansion
Widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians of all time, Robin Williams was known for his incredible wit, improvisational skills and an extraordinary ability to juggle comedy and tragedy, sometimes in the space of one scene.
Now, one of the late actor's homes is for sale – listed for an extraordinary $25 million (£20.1m). Built in 1926, the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home sprawls across almost 11,000 square feet of a 0.4-acre lot in an exclusive San Francisco enclave. Click or scroll on to take a tour...

Robin Williams
The star of family favourites such as Hook, Mrs Doubtfire and Aladdin, legendary actor Robin Williams was an icon of his generation. As well as his faultless comedic performances, he earned critical acclaim for dramas like Good Morning, Vietnam and Dead Poets Society, as well as Good Will Hunting, for which he won an Oscar.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, the beloved performer built up an estimated net worth of around $50 million (£40.2m) before his tragic death in August 2014, aged just 63.
Let's take a look around one of the many incredible homes Williams bought during his lifetime, which has just hit the market...
Robin Williams' Renaissance-style villa
Located in Sea Cliff, one of San Francisco's most sought-after neighbourhoods, Williams spent $3.2 million on the stunning home in 1991, around $7.2 million (£5.8m) in today's money. He was no doubt attracted to its characterful features, such as the impressive stone fireplace and imposing beams in this sun-filled drawing room.
Period details abound throughout the house, including ornate mouldings, wide plank hardwood flooring and built-in cabinetry, as well as carved archways, marble columns and patterned terracotta tiles.
Airy, open living spaces
Every room makes the most of the Californian sunshine, featuring French doors or multiple large windows. We can just imagine the entertainer hard at work in this tasteful study, thinking up his famous one-liners.
Williams shared the home with his second wife, film producer and philanthropist Marsha Garces, before the pair divorced in 2010 after 21 years of marriage. Garces kept the home following their split and has lived in it ever since.
Breathtaking vistas
While the property itself is impressive, it's the breathtaking vistas that really set this home apart. Imagine soaking in the tub while taking in this dramatic view of the Golden Gate Bridge! The outlook stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Marin Headlands and the mouth of the Bay.
Elsewhere, house hunters will find a movie theatre, a Prohibition-era bar hidden behind wood panelling and a secret passageway linking the children's bedrooms, according to Robb Report.
A sensitive renovation
The villa was originally built by architect Earle B. Bertz for a lumber magnate and was designed in a distinctive Italian Renaissance style.
Decades later, Robin and Marsha carried out an extensive renovation of the home, which they shared with their two children. “Marsha and Robin Williams took the house down to the studs and rebuilt it in the early nineties, updating all the major systems,” the listing agent, Steven Mavromihalis, said in a press statement.
“They expanded the home to its current 10,598 square feet on three levels. However, they took great pains to preserve the rare and valuable building materials used in 1926, which are simply no longer available in the construction of modern homes."
Filled with happy memories
Now on the market for $25 million (£20m), Marsha is downsizing and saying goodbye to the home she has lived in for more than 30 years. “It’s a beautiful, happy house,” she told The Wall Street Journal. “We had many, many fantastic years of fun and play and joy there.”
Much like Williams himself, his former home is a place that "flawlessly balances boundless beauty and grace, with childlike mirth and exuberance", according to the listing.
“It is everything you imagine Robin Williams to be,” Mavromihalis told the WSJ.

Jim Carrey
Canadian-born actor Jim Carrey has come a long way since working as a janitor in his teenage years to support his family. Hitting the big time in the mid-90s in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber and The Mask, the actor went on to earn a Golden Globe for his performance in The Truman Show, before donning his furry green suit in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Said to be worth around $180 million (£145m), he has his pick of luxury homes, but he's held onto one of them for nearly 30 years. However, change is afoot...

The 61-year-old actor has listed his LA ‘sanctuary’ mansion in February 2023, which has been his home for the past three decades, for a staggering $28.9 million (£23.3m).
Carrey bought the ranch-style estate in 1994 for $3.8 million, around $7.8 million in today's money, around the time of the release of his first major movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. According to reports, the actor describes the 12,704-square-foot property as “a place of enchantment and inspiration.”

Located in the Brentwood neighbourhood of LA, the five-bedroom, nine-bathroom home sits on two acres of land and includes a gym, a tennis court, a waterfall pool and a dedicated yoga platform. The listing came shortly after the actor announced he planned to retire following the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in 2022, explaining he feels he has “done enough.”
In the main living areas, pitched, beamed ceilings with skylights and swathes of French doors allow natural light to flow through the space. The neutral, contemporary interiors are dotted with eye-catching paintings and statues, many of them Carrey’s own work. Elsewhere are mementos from his life in film, including his Riddler costume from Batman Forever, which is displayed in the bar area.

The incredible screening room meanwhile is state-of-the-art, with a perspex box showcasing his costume from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Sumptuous armchairs and sofas provide a comfortable setting in which to kick back and enjoy the show.
While it is not certain where Carrey will buy next, it seems likely he will look for a calm and isolated spot to pursue his art.

Elsewhere, the primary bedroom has its own sitting area, fireplace and pretty balcony overlooking lush greenery and trees in blossom.
Reflecting on his time there, Carrey said: “Every night the owls sang me lullabies and every morning I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds, under a giant grandfather pine.”
Two months after putting his home on the market, Carey cut the price to a still-impressive $26.5 million (£21.4m). The listing is no longer active, so whether the actor found a buyer or decided to hang onto the property for a little longer is unclear.

Christian Slater
With a big screen career spanning almost four decades, 90s heart-throb Christian Slater has amassed a net worth of a reported $25 million (£20.2m). Raised in New York City, the star went on to live in the sunnier climes of LA and Florida, investing in a stunning Miami residence in the Sunshine State.
Christian Slater's Mediterranean-style villa, Florida, USA
Slater’s Italian-style home spans 3,293 square feet within a gated street close to the waterfront. The property is surrounded by lush vegetation in the Coconut Grove area of Miami. Purchasing the property for $2.2 million (£1.8m) in 2013, the villa served as the primary home of the True Romance star and his wife, Brittany Lopez for many years.
Also known as 'Villa Dolce far Niente', or 'the sweetness of doing nothing', the meticulously renovated home boasts safety windows and a generator to help guard against hurricanes, a common occurrence in the Florida area.

Arched doorways throughout add to the Mediterranean feel, leading through from the lush landscaped grounds into the stunning reception areas. Large multi-panelled windows cast streams of Florida sunlight into each room, not least in the spacious and neutrally decorated living area.
Also on the first floor is the state-of-the-art kitchen, which comes complete with SubZero, Viking and Miele appliances, plus a large pantry and a breakfast nook. Hanging vines and potted plants abound, while palm trees punctuate views of the stunning grounds.

The second floor hosts three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The main suite benefits from a large walk-in closet, an ensuite marble bathroom with a separate shower and soaking tub, as well as an entertainment area.
The Heathers actor will have also enjoyed poolside views from the suite's rooftop terrace and sunny seating area.

Mahogany doors lead out onto the brick-lined patio and poolside area, flanked by towering palms and mature shrubbery for extra privacy.
After nine years of soaking up the sun in this palatial spot, the leading man listed his magnificent abode for nearly $4 million (£3.2m) in 2022, fetching an offer that exceeded the asking price in just three days.
The actor moved on, says Compass realtor Liz Hogan because "his work has him dividing his time between his residences in New York and Los Angeles.”

Julia Roberts
From Pretty Woman and My Best Friend's Wedding to Notting Hill and Stepmom, Julia Roberts starred in some of the biggest movies of the 90s and remains a megastar to this day.
Thanks to her decades in the business, the iconic actor is said to be worth in the region of $250 million (£202m) and she's used her wealth to amass an array of gorgeous homes, including a historic townhouse in the heart of San Francisco.
Julia Roberts' San Francisco townhouse, California, USA
At the beginning of 2020, Roberts snapped up this attractive townhouse in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Presidio Heights, San Francisco. It might look fairly modest from the outside, but it set the star back an eye-watering $8.3 million (£6.7m).
Constructed in 1907, the elegant home was designed by architect Sylvain Schnaittacher and remodelled by John Wheatman. However, since her purchase, Roberts has undertaken an impressive renovation.

The front door opens to a light-filled hallway, decked out with hardwood floors and leaded windows. The imposing entrance leads through to just over 6,200 square feet of living space, which includes a charming lounge with a central fireplace and built-in shelving, and a formal dining room with panelled walls and a coffered ceiling.

The colourful kitchen is likely one of the home's finest spaces and boasts a warm, country aesthetic thanks to its marble worktops, centre island and rustic green cupboards. Stainless steel appliances, a walk-in pantry and a wine fridge make it the ultimate space for a foodie, while its breakfast nook is the perfect spot for morning coffees.

Upstairs there are five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, but the pièce de résistance has to be the master suite. Located on the third floor, it features a dressing area, a celebrity-worthy walk-in closet and a private balcony.
Elsewhere, hidden away in the basement, there's a cinema room, wine cellar and office. What's more, thanks to the home's hilltop location, many of the rooms enjoy views of the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

John Travolta
John Travolta has been gracing our screens since the 1970s, starring in such hits as Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Yet the movie star went in a different direction in the 90s, transforming himself into the ultimate mobster with roles in iconic movies Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty.
Today, he's said to be worth a staggering $250 million (£202m), and he's used his money to secure an array of stunning residences across America, including a sprawling island retreat in Maine.

In February 2021, Travolta decided to wave goodbye to this traditional island home off the coast of Maine, which had belonged to the legendary actor for some two decades. John and his late wife Kelly Preston, who tragically lost her battle with cancer in July 2020, were newlyweds when they purchased the property back in 1991.
The perfect place to escape the hubbub of Hollywood, the VIP holiday home boasts a 10,830-square-foot manor, 48 acres of land, a swimming pool and private beach access.

Built in 1904 by architects Peabody and Stearns, the property was dark and dull when Travolta and Preston moved in, but thanks to an extensive renovation it's now colourful, light and cosy.
Before beginning the redesign, the couple browsed magazines for inspiration, before settling on an English country house theme. They spent a few months camping out in a small farmhouse on the estate while they carried out the work.

After their first Christmas in the house, the couple hired esteemed interior designer Christopher Boshears to finish the job. Every room is decked out in linen draperies, damask and velvet upholstery, as well as cottage décor that was partly inspired by the property's coastal setting.
The house benefits from plenty of unique architectural details, too, including stone fireplaces, gilded light fixtures, Tudor Revival sash windows and characterful timber trims.

The traditional mansion offers 42 rooms in total, including numerous living rooms for work, rest and play, a large kitchen, a formal dining room, 20 bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The master suite features a wall of windows and comes with an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, fireplace and, of course, jaw-dropping views.
However, after languishing on the market for nearly two years, with an initial price tag of $5 million (£4m), the listing was mysteriously taken down in January 2023. It appears the home has been removed from the market as, according to Zillow, it hasn't been sold recently.

Jodie Foster
After an acclaimed role in Taxi Driver at the age of 12, Jodie Foster went on to become one of the world's most recognisable stars. Taking the lead in movies like The Silence of the Lambs, The Accused and Flightplan, Foster accumulated a $100 million (£81m) fortune.
In recent years, she's also been behind the camera, taking on the role of producer and director on episodes of TV's Black Mirror and Orange Is the New Black. Let's find out where she lives...
Jodie Foster's Beverly Hills mansion, California, USA
In 2019, Jodie Foster placed this secluded mansion on the market with Christie's International Real Estate at a $15.9 million (£12.8m) asking price. Tucked away in the mountains above Coldwater Canyon in Beverly Hills, the property had belonged to the Oscar winner for seven years.
Foster bought the pad back in 2011, for just less than $11.8 million (£9.5m), and sold it for $14.9 million (£12m) mere weeks after putting it on the market. We can see why it was such a quick sale!

The house sits on 0.65 acres of land and is spread over two floors. It was built in the 1950s, but Foster undertook an interior makeover before listing it, resulting in modern spaces that are effortlessly complemented by period touches.
Inside, the property offers light-filled and sophisticated living spaces, some with floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized fireplaces, hardwood floors, traditional timber wainscotting and vaulted ceilings.

The front door leads into a double-height entrance hall, complete with a statement staircase, swathes of windows and whitewashed panelled walls. From the hall, the home opens up into an inviting living room, a media room and a formal dining room. There's also a contemporary kitchen with marble countertops and French doors that open out onto an alfresco dining deck.

The house isn't short on luxurious amenities, including a climate-controlled wine cellar with a tasting room, a high-end fitness centre and a massage room.
Unsurprisingly, the glamourous property was listed for a staggering sum when Damon decided to say goodbye in January 2021. Though he originally asked $21 million (£17m), it finally sold for $18 million (£14.5m), making it one of California's priciest real estate deals in 2021, according to the LA Times.

Samuel L Jackson
Samuel L Jackson has been gracing our screens since the 1970s, but the legendary actor really hit the big time in the 90s, starring in the likes of Pulp Fiction, Die Hard with a Vengeance and Jackie Brown.
He's now considered one of the world's most loved and widely recognised actors. What's more, the films in which he's appeared have collectively grossed over $27 billion (£22bn) worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing actors of all time.
Samuel L Jackson's Manhattan condo, New York, USA
With his fortune, Samuel L Jackson has invested in a range of homes, but he's always been drawn to New York City. In 2005, the acting legend put down $4.8 million (£3.9m) for a chic condo inside this historic apartment building, known as The Leonori, on the Upper East Side. Jackson wasn't the first celebrity owner though. In fact, he bought the home from sports star Greg Anthony.

Today, she has a net worth in the region of $18 million (£14.5m), as well as a new generation of fans, thanks to her role in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. So where does the star live?
Winona Ryder's long-time home, California, USA
Well, Ryder owned this gorgeous property in San Francisco for some 25 years. She purchased the home back in 1995 for a mere $1.3 million (that would be around $2.6m / £2.1m), but sold it in December 2020 for just over $4.9 million (£4m), which is a pretty tidy profit!
According to the listing, it sold in just nine days.

It isn't difficult to see what drew Ryder to the historic home. Dating back to 1902, the Victorian pad is located atop one of the most coveted blocks in San Francisco, in one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the city, Cow Hollow.
The three-level home offers 3,140 square feet of living space, as well as plenty of gorgeous period touches, such as timber fireplaces, large bay windows and hardwood floors.

The couple previously sold their Manhattan penthouse for almost $18 million (£14.5m) and listed their New York estate for just shy of $13 million (£10.5m) in January 2019.
It seems like the family could be looking to slim down their portfolio following Bruce's retirement. In March 2022, he stepped away from the big screen, following his diagnosis with the degenerative condition aphasia, which impacts cognitive abilities. In February 2023, his wife revealed a new diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. The announcement triggered an outpouring of love from the action star's friends, former co-stars and fans.
