How the Barbie star took care of her mother
Like many young actors just starting out, Margot Robbie was helped out financially by her mother in the early days. However, most wannabe performers don't go on to become A-list Hollywood stars with a string of hit movies to their name and – most importantly – the bank balance to match. But Margot isn't your average actress – or daughter – and she was determined to pay her mother back every last cent. "Everything I owed my mom, I had it written down," she recently revealed to CBS Sunday Morning.

Living the dream
Margot went on to reveal that Sari would "take money out of the... house mortgage [to] lend me money. So I always knew, I was like, 'I gotta pay that back'." After landing a role in Australian soap Neighbours and the soaring success of her first major film The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot had a little surprise to thank her mother for her support. "One day, when I made enough money, I just paid that whole mortgage off completely. "I was like, 'Mom, don't even worry about that mortgage anymore. It doesn't even exist anymore." The actor and producer insisted anyone would do the same in her position and added that, although she's hardworking, she's also the "luckiest, luckiest, luckiest person in the world".
Margot Robbie clears her mum's mortgage
Now one of the world's most popular up-and-coming actors, the star boasts a net worth of around $40 million (£21m). It was back in 2014, a year after landing her first major film role, Robbie paid off her mother’s entire mortgage as a gift for her 60th birthday. Margot had actually grown up in the four-bedroom house, which is situated in the Broadbeach suburb of Gold Coast, Australia.

Inside, the property boasts an open-plan living room, complete with a dining zone and kitchen, which flows out to a sheltered alfresco area, surrounded by a tropical garden. To Margot and her family, it really was a dream home.

Some of the home's four bedrooms benefit from skyline and Gold Coast hinterland views, while this lovely space looks out over the backyard. Light-filled and modern, the property is clearly a perfect family home. While the home is modest by superstar standards, Margot has since splashed out on some seriously pricey pads to complete her property portfolio.

Outside there's a lovely swimming pool and a dining space, perfect for making the most of Australia's enviable climate. In October 2018, Sarie decided to wave the house goodbye. It was meant to go up for auction but ended up securing an early buyer. In August that same year, Margot reportedly splashed a generous AUD$2.5 million (£1.3m / $1.7m) on two modern side-by-side homes for her mother and sister on the Gold Coast. "We have seen Margot here a couple of times, but she keeps her arrival very low key," a neighbour told the Daily Mail. "She blends in just like she's a local, which she can do easily as she grew up around here, of course."

Celine Dion and her mother Therese Tanguay-Dion
Three years after losing her mother, Celine Dion listed Therese Tanguay-Dion’s Montreal home. A TV personality in her own right, Maman Dion – as she was affectionately known in Canada – co-wrote her daughter’s very first song, which propelled her to stardom. Built in 2002, it’s unclear when exactly Therese moved into the elegant home, but city tax records identify Celine Dion as the owner. If so, she wouldn’t be the first celebrity to buy their parent a lavish home to thank them for their support.
Celine Dion bought her mother a Montreal mansion
Priced at $2.4 million (£1.5m / $1.8m), Therese’s former home lies on the banks of the Rivière des Mille Îles, in Laval, just outside Montreal. Billed by the estate agent as an ideal home for inter-generational living, the 5,000-square-foot house is essentially split into two. Despite having a modest three bedrooms and three bathrooms, the two-storey mansion has two kitchens, two dens and two walk-in closets, as well as a workshop, office, sewing room, laundry room and space for six cars.

At the heart of the 16-room home lies the beautiful sunroom, which opens out from the kitchen and dining room and must have been a wonderful space for the matriarch to spend time with her enormous family – Celine is the youngest of 14 children and all but one survive their mother. With a fireplace and views of the river, the solarium is the perfect spot to cosy up with family and enjoy even the chilliest Canadian winter. Decorated simply throughout, there are wooden floors in almost every room, as well as carved fireplace surrounds, intricate mouldings and interior and exterior columns. Despite these grand details, the house has a warm, relaxed atmosphere and it’s easy to see why it was chosen for Therese to live out her final years.

Almost one-third of the French-speaking neighbourhood is home to people aged 65 and over and is described in the listing as a ‘haven of peace.’ This may have appealed to the matriarch after years in the spotlight, first as a well-known stage mother and later as the presenter of a cookery show. She even had her own line of food products, Pâtés de Maman Dion. Her ambition clearly rubbed off on her daughter, who has won 5 Grammy Awards, 7 Billboard Music Awards and 20 Juno Awards over her career. However, performing has recently taken a back seat after the singer was diagnosed with the rare illness Stiff Person Syndrome in December 2022.

Therese died in her Laval home aged 92, surrounded by her children. “We told stories. We sang songs. We hugged each other and we said our goodbyes,” the songstress revealed. “We are pretty sure that mom waited for us to be all together before departing.” Celine and her mother remained close until Therese’s death in January 2020, even living in the same neighbourhood until 2016, when the Canadian singer sold her home on a nearby private island.
Cardi B and her mother, Clara Almánzar
In 2018, the hugely successful rapper, producer and reality television star, Cardi B made her dream come true of buying her mum, Clara Almánzar, a house. Now worth an estimated $40 million, the Grammy award-winning, triple platinum musician wasn’t quite able to afford to buy her mum the New York-based pad she wanted to in 2017. By 2018, however, her career had soared and her bank balance soon followed…

After the success of her single ‘Bodak Yellow’ in 2017, followed by her third US number one 'Girls Like You’, Cardi B was finally able to drop $1.5 million (£1.3m) on a multi-floor manse in New Jersey. Purchased for her mum, the rapper quickly took to Instagram to show off the interiors complete with marble and hardwood flooring. Cardi is heard saying it is the happiest day of her life as she films the spacious chef's kitchen with large granite island, ready for her mum to truly cook up a storm.

Heading upstairs via the ornate wrought iron staircase, Cardi continues to excitedly give her followers a tour around the eight-bedroom manse yet to be furnished but brimming with potential to become a cosy family home. She goes on to describe her happiness that when her daughter, Kulture—born in July 2018—visits her grandma’s house, “she’s going to come here, with all her friends.”

The basement is clearly Cardi’s most treasured part of the house, complete with its own gymnasium. The ‘Please Me’ star heads downstairs to the kitted out space, exclaiming “my favourite part is the basement. Demi Lovato and family
With an impressive career spanning almost 20 years, it's no wonder that American singer and actor Demi Lovato has built such an impressive property portfolio. The Heart Attack singer is thought to be worth a cool $40 million (£35m), but by the time they were 18 years old, they'd already bought their family (pictured here) a brand-new home. The perfect place to rest and recharge, the Spanish-style home is walled and gated for total privacy. Built in 1928, it benefits from just over 4,000 square feet of inside space. The formal living room is one of the home's nicest spaces, thanks to its European fireplace, huge arched windows and vaulted ceiling with exposed trusses.

Since quitting pro-wrestling, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has quickly become everyone's favourite action hero. Thanks to roles in the likes of the Fast & Furious franchise, Jumanji and Baywatch, The Rock is now the world's highest-paid actor, according to Forbes, and his net worth is thought to be as much as $800 million (£418m). The star has always looked after his family, especially his mother, Ata, who was once a professional wrestler herself.

In June 2022, The Rock took to Instagram to share a video of him surprising his mum with a brand-new house. In the post, he explained that it took him and his design team eight weeks to get the property move-in ready. “Mom, there’s no greater feeling than to make you happy – welcome home," he said in the post. The residence, in the Encino neighbourhood of Los Angeles, cost the star a fraction under $3.5 million (£3.1m).

Venus Williams and mother, Oracene
Iconic sports star Venus Williams has enjoyed an incredibly successful career as a professional tennis player. The former world No. 1 has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, including five at Wimbledon and two at the US Open, making her one of the all-time greats of the sport. Today, she's thought to be worth $95 million (£84m) and she's used her money to snap up various lovely homes over the years, including one in Jupiter, Florida, that she gifted to her mother, Oracene Williams.
Venus gave her mother a Palm Beach retreat
Venus bought the place in 2000, paying a remarkably low $310,000 (£274k). She lived there for over a decade before handing over the keys to her mother in September 2013, according to Redfin. For legal reasons, Oracene reportedly had to pay Venus $10 in order to gain ownership of the property – that's not a bad price for a stunning retreat in the exclusive Jupiter Farms neighbourhood of Palm Beach County.

The lovely rural retreat was constructed in 1998 and spans more than 2,800 square feet. It was extensively renovated by Venus in 2003, but still retains much of its classic charm. From its tiled floors to its European-inspired fireplaces, French doors and spiral staircase, there's plenty of personality inside this Florida estate.

The house has an entrance hall, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen with granite counters and a dining room and sitting room separated by a dual-sided fireplace. The master suite opens up to a gorgeous private balcony overlooking the garden, while the expansive ensuite boasts a jetted tub, gold fixtures and a marble floor. There's also a dry sauna, which Venus no doubt made full use of after her many battles on the tennis court.

The pad even comes with a lovely indoor swimming pool and a lush one-acre garden that's surrounded by palms – although there's no tennis court! In June 2020, the house was sold for $545,000 (£481k), so it looks like Oracene might have moved on to pastures new.

Leonardo DiCaprio and his mother, Irmelin Indenbirken
Any fan of Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio will know that he absolutely adores his mother, Irmelin. Leo bought his mom a Hollywood mansion
Leo bought the home from Modern Family actor, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who paid just under $4.6 million (£4m) for the estate back in 2013. According to the listing, the property was on the market for just one week before Leo put down $7.1 million (£6.2m) and handed the keys over to his mum! Amazingly, both Robert Pattinson and rock star Gwen Stefani have also called the place home, and it's said to be just 30 minutes away from Leo's own pad.

Not wanting to leave his father George DiCaprio (centre) out, Leo bought him a romantic, Tudor-inspired manor in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of Los Angeles in 2018. The home previously belonged to Leo's personal friend, DJ and musician Moby. The Titanic star paid Moby $4.9 million (£4.3m) for the pad, which was reportedly $400,000 (£353k) over the original asking price.

The property was originally listed for $5.7 million (£5m), but after struggling to find a buyer, the price was chopped.
