Tom Ford’s Sant Fe movie set ranch
American fashion designer Tom Ford is no stranger to a dramatic entrance and a statement piece. As well as a couture aficionado, the former Gucci creative director is also a talented film director, which explains the movie town built into his stunning 20,662-acre New Mexico estate. Let’s take a look around…
Tom Ford’s Sant Fe movie set ranch
Known as the Cerro Pelon Ranch, the Santa Fe property was built by award-winning architect Tadao Ando. The main house sits low to the ground, floating over an expansive reflective pool, with a wide walkway cutting atmospherically across the water.

Ford, reportedly worth $500 million (£380m), had access to the ranch’s extensive equestrian facilities, with a covered riding arena and an eight-stall horse barn. For A-list visitors, there are also two guesthouses, plus four private staff quarters, and even a tennis court to while away their downtime.

The cherry on the cake of this fascinating estate is the full-sized movie town set, originally built in the 1980s for the Kevin Costner western, Silverado. Since then the town has expanded and it's frequently leased for movie and television productions. After four years on the market and its price tag reportedly cut from $75 million (£57m) to $48 million (£36m), Ford’s exquisite ranch finally found a buyer in January 2021.
Flea’s retro-futuristic California pad
Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ bassist Flea is known to be a pretty far-out showman, and his taste in property is just as show-stopping. Looking like something from outer space, his retro-futurist home in the heart of La Crescenta, California is definitely one-of-a-kind. Let’s take a look around…
Flea’s retro-futuristic California pad
Originally listed at $7.9 million (£5.8m) in 2015, lucky Flea snapped up the estate for the cut-down price of $4.3 million (£3.2) in 2018. One of the compound's two houses, this extravagant seven-sided pad, built by AD100 architect Michael Maltzan in 2009, resembles a spaceship that's just landed on the hillside.

Inside, the interiors are just as unusual as the striking exterior. The primary suite features this futuristic, curvilinear penny-tiled bathroom, which has views across the courtyard and the breathtaking hillside beyond.
Flea’s retro-futuristic California pad
The 5.7-acre compound's second house dates all the way back to the 1950s. The original structure was built for acclaimed architect Richard Neutra's secretary, Dorothy Serulnic. Its interior is still bursting with 1960s-era mod cons, such as a sofa with a built-in record player and a rather handy sliding breakfast nook.

The grounds offer a 50-foot Johnston Vidal lap pool, as well as an outdoor movie pavilion and a catering kitchen—the perfect place for the Red Hot showman to entertain guests. Nevertheless, the rock star clearly wanted a change of scenery, as he listed the magnificent estate in February 2022 for $9.8 million (£7.4m).

A lover of quirky design, Lady Gaga is no stranger to unique homes and over the years she has bought and sold some interesting pieces of real estate. Yet nothing is quite as eye-catching as the characterful compound she snapped up in 2016.
Lady Gaga's quirky Laurel Canyon compound
Gaga splashed just under $5.3 million (£4m) on the historic home in Laurel Canyon, California, just a few months before releasing her fifth studio album, Joanna. Once owned by 'Valley Girl' singer Frank Zappa, Gaga was the first person outside of the star's family to call the property home. Zappa purchased the six-bedroom home in 1968 for just $75,000 (£57k) and went on to transform it into the treasure trove it is today.
