Thanks to her award-winning albums, countless Grammys and a very lucrative upcoming Las Vegas residency, multimillionaire singer and songwriter Adele's life has changed dramatically over the years. The North London-born artist, whose fourth album, 30, was released in November 2021, has also built up quite the real estate portfolio during her rise to the top. From her new Beverly Hills mansion bought from Sylvester Stallone to the home opposite her ex-husband that she's just put on the market, let's take a look at her property empire...
Notoriously private, Adele keeps her family life close to her chest—most of her properties are tucked away on private roads or located in gated communities. Currently, the star is believed to own two townhouses in London's Kensington and three mega-mansions on the very same street in Beverly Hills, with plenty more plush homes having passed through her hands. Most recently she is also reported to have snapped up Sylvester Stallone's multi-million dollar mansion. Despite this glamorous portfolio, however, Adele's early homes were much more humble.
Have you ever wondered where Hollywood stars lived before they were famous? A far cry from the glitz and glamour that would await her in later life, Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in Tottenham in 1988. At the age of nine, she moved to Brighton with her mum, Penny, though she didn't stay away from London for long.
Aged 11, Adele and her mother returned to south London and moved into a modest flat in West Norwood above a discount shop, which has since been converted into a restaurant. At the start of her career, Adele talked candidly about the area: "Me and my mum and our flatmate live above a shop next to a garage—it caught fire a couple of months ago". Nevertheless, she's rumoured to have written 'Hometown Glory' in their snug apartment, inspired by the tight-knit south London community.
These formative years in West Norwood proved crucial for laying the groundwork for her success. Enrolling in the Brit School in Croydon, Adele counted Kate Nash and Katie Melua among her contemporaries and began to hone her talents. At home, her walls were a shrine to the Spice Girls, but it was the discovery of the sultry vocals of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald at her local record shop that really helped to shape Adele's signature sound.
In 2006, Adele left the Brit School and within a week of graduating had been offered a record deal. Incredibly popular on London's live circuit, she decided to move out on her own. Purportedly taking inspiration from her favourite film, Adele began renting a flat in stylish Notting Hill. Two years later, her first album 19 was released and the whirlwind of fame began...
In 2011, the same year that her follow-up album 21 was released, Adele began renting this 13-bedroom palatial mansion in West Sussex for around $17,200 (£15k) a month. Winning two Grammy awards in 2009, the singer quickly rose to the heady heights of stardom, meaning the mansion's remote location in the middle of the countryside was a big attraction.
Named Lock House, the vast grounds extend as far as the eye can see, with sweeping lawns, fine mature trees and areas of light woodland. The property's pièce de résistance, however, was the uninterrupted view across South Downs National Park.
The dwelling offered a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of life in London. During a televised tour, Adele told US TV host Anderson Cooper that she was there "for safety". Nestled within 25 private acres, it certainly provided the privacy she craved, with the traditional home's wood-panelled walls and Persian rugs offering the ultimate country retreat away from the cameras.
Built in 1900, the property has retained many of the Art Deco touches added during its 1930s redecoration. Although the interior is kitted out with modern luxuries, it still features quirky traditional spaces like this billiard room. We imagine this was a comfortable space for Adele to convalesce in, following surgery after her vocal haemorrhage in November 2011.
She rented the estate with her partner at the time Simon Konecki, a former investment banker who went on to found clean water charity Drop4Drop. The two are thought to have gotten together the previous year. In this image posted by Adele on Instagram in 2011, the singer's dachshund Louie is seen in one of the sitting rooms, posing alongside the company's "clean water for all" hashtag.
Featuring an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and even a helicopter pad, the luxurious house went on the market in 2018 for $8.3 million (£7.2m). Adele confessed that she didn't make the most of the property's grand attractions. "This house is a bit of a cliché, really", she said, admitting that many of the rooms were left empty.
With electric gates and an elevated position overlooking the grounds, one of the key selling points of this property for the publicity-shy singer was its security. Adele moved away from the luxurious country manor in 2012 and began snapping up properties of her own.
Expanding her portfolio, she purchased this stunning Art Deco house on the beachfront in Hove, just outside Brighton, for $2.9 million (£2.5m) in 2012. The year also marked an even more momentous event—the birth of her son, Angelo, in October.
Located on Western Esplanade, or Millionaires' Row as it's known, the property would've been similar to this residence, with four bedrooms and spacious open-plan rooms spread across two storeys. This affluent stretch of homes is the go-to spot for celebs in search of the sea, with Fatboy Slim, David Walliams and Heather Mills among its past and present residents.
Homes here are outfitted with every luxury finish money can buy, and the bathrooms are no exception. As well as breathtaking sea views from every window, Adele's beautiful beach house would've benefited from an array of private balconies for enjoying the occasional ray of English sunshine.
With its own private stretch of beach and a tranquil wood deck for admiring the coastline, we're not surprised this property caught Adele's eye. She sold up four years later in 2016, making a tidy profit of $402,000 (£350k).
Around the same time, Adele made moves on the London property scene, snapping up a mews house in exclusive Kensington for $6.4 million (£5.6m) and then purchasing the house next door for $6.2 million (£5.4m), with the intention of combining the properties. She also went on to buy her mum, Penny, an apartment nearby for $690,000 (£600k). All the while though, Adele had her sights set on the US...
Surveying the property scene in California later that year, Adele, Simon and baby Angelo rented this incredible mansion in Beverly Hills while searching for a permanent residence in the star-studded neighbourhood. Sometimes you've just got to slum it!
Typically guarded, Adele kept a tight lid on where she was staying, but thanks to several leaked details—the vintage bowling alley in the home's basement and references to the property's previous owner, Sir Paul McCartney—fans quickly sniffed out the star's new dwelling.
The huge property's main house stretches 12,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, plus a three-car garage and plenty of surrounding land. With a huge bar and wine cellar on the lower level, we've no doubt that this home has seen its fair share of shindigs.
The Hamptons-style interiors offer chic living spaces, while the palatial bathroom includes a freestanding bath and a chandelier. Elsewhere, there are large terraces for soaking up the LA sun and an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. Other famous past residents of the impressive estate include Melanie Griffith and the Osbourne family.
While the hunt for the perfect Beverly Hills pad continued, Adele added to her property collection with a holiday home on the sunny shores of Malibu in 2015. Costing her $5.2 million (£4.5m), it was said to be love at first sight for the singer. Take a look at the hacienda-style house and you'll understand.
Complete with an infinity pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, Adele would bring her family here to soak up the winter sun. The 3,770-square-foot mansion is set within a secure, gated community, a mere stone's throw away from the beach below. A star-studded complex, Adele's new neighbours included Pierce Brosnan, Barbra Streisand and Pamela Anderson.
After a busy few years, this luxury retreat must've been the ideal place for Adele to enjoy some much-needed downtime—in 2012 she released the James Bond theme song 'Skyfall', which went on to win an Academy Award, and the following year she was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to music. At this time, she was likely working on her third album 25, which was released in November 2015.
Inside, the lavish three-bed home is decorated with a crisp, clean palette and warm wood accents and even features a circular bar overlooking the ocean. While purportedly smitten with the pad, Adele appears to have sold up two years later in 2017, for $4 million (£3.5m), which was less than the singer originally paid. With a world tour commencing the previous year, the singer likely had little spare time to kick back here.
When the Adele Live tour arrived in New York City, this mind-blowing penthouse became the megastar's home-away-from-home during her run of sell-out shows at Madison Square Garden. Owned by basketball star Deron Williams, Adele forked out $50,000 (£43.5k) a week to rent the stylish piece of real estate.
Tucked away in the city's skyline, the opulent home offers six bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread across an enormous 7,200 square feet of interior space. With outdoor roof gardens and terraces measuring 2,700 square feet—bigger than the average American home—the Tribeca apartment is big enough to house a small village!
No multimillion-dollar pad is complete without a few A-list essentials, and this exclusive home isn't short on extras. During her stay, Adele would've been able to enjoy a few drinks at the wet bar, catch a movie in the media room and have her pick of vintage vinos in the climate-controlled wine room. It'd be rude not to, right?
The same year, Adele finally found the Beverly Hills estate she'd been yearning for. Snapped up in 2016 for a cool $7.9 million (£6.9m), she made the purchase after signing a record-breaking $121 million (£105m) contract with Sony Music. Seems like a pretty apt way to celebrate!
Built in 1977, the elegant estate has an airy, open-plan layout that's perfect for family living. A whitewashed fireplace offers a cool and calming focal point in the lounge, though we're not sure that mantelpiece is big enough for the star's numerous awards.
White-beamed ceilings and an open kitchen add to the beach house vibe in the chic 6,500-square-foot property. The home is nestled within the gated community of Hidden Valley, which is popular among the rich and famous, with actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Cameron Diaz as Adele's celebrity neighbours.
Upstairs, you'll find four spacious bedrooms, including the master suite which comes complete with two walk-in closets to accommodate the singer's vast wardrobe. However, our favourite space has to be this library nook on the first floor—we can just imagine curling up with a book here beneath that impressive vaulted ceiling.
This restful residence offered the ideal space for the family to enjoy a private life away from the limelight. When her mammoth world tour of 107 shows was cut short after the singer damaged her vocal cords, Adele returned home to Beverly Hills to see this heart-warming banner from her son Angelo in the entrance hall.
Shielded by towering hedges, the outside space is equally as dreamy. With something for adults and little ones alike, the mansion's gorgeous backyard features landscaped grounds, mature trees, a pool and a spa, while a treehouse and outdoor train are sure to appeal to nine-year-old Angelo.
Not content with the mansion in Beverly Hills, Adele snapped up a stunning eight-bed Tudor manor house in the UK in 2017. Located in a remote, rural spot in East Grinstead, West Sussex, the home was listed with Savills for around $4.6 million (£4m). In the listing, the estate is described as being "amidst beautiful, lightly wooded countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, bordering the picturesque Bluebell Steam Railway".
The singer's purchase of the vast country manor coincided with another significant life event—her marriage to her partner Simon Konecki. Wed in secret, the 47-acre estate offered the newlyweds a private spot to start their married lives. Even today, few photos of the property exist due to the seemingly endless stretches of private land that surround it.
Bursting with character, the property has an amazing history and is thought to date back to the 16th century. Original beams, brickwork and exposed timber show off the traditional period features, with several original open fireplaces still remaining. This double-height living room is particularly impressive—just imagine how snug that hearth would be come winter!
Decked out in traditional country-inspired décor, the estate also includes three additional cottages for visiting guests, while bluebell meadows and two Victorian greenhouses offer a true taste of affluent country living. However, following her filing for divorce from Simon in September 2019, Adele sold the home at the end of the year for $3.4 million (£3m), a loss of $1.1 million (£1m).
Early in 2019, Adele picked up a second property in the same affluent Beverly Hills neighbourhood of Hidden Valley. With a price tag of $10.7 million (£9.3m), the sleek contemporary home is located right across the street from her existing estate.
Designed and built in the early 1960s, the home's open-plan interior is neutral and stylish, with a sunken sitting area framing views of the garden. The purchase came around the same time that rumours of the couple's divorce began circulating in May 2019.
With five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a library, art studio and fitness suite, the star's purchase was a pretty sizeable investment and certainly isn't short on space. We love the vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom, which comes complete with a sitting area and fireplace.
Lined with bulbs, we can imagine the star preening in front of this impressive mirror before a red carpet appearance. Filled with natural light, the space features a raised bathtub and a huge marble top with double sinks—the ideal space to get away from it all.
With a stunning landscaped garden, large pool and Jacuzzi, we're supremely envious of this lavish property. However, it doesn't appear as though Adele spends much time in the home. This is thought to be the house that Adele's ex-husband Simon Konecki stays in, making it easy for the pair to co-parent their young son.
In 2020, Adele shared a sneak peek into her homes on Instagram. Pictured here watching her 2016 Glastonbury set, the singer can be seen perched on a cream rug sitting in front of a circular coffee table. Peeking through the blinds, it also appears that she has a London Underground Tottenham Hale sign in tribute to her hometown.
In May 2021, Adele snapped up her third Beverly Hills mansion on the very same street for just shy of $8.9 million (£7.8m) from long-time friend Nicole Richie. The TV personality and her husband, Joel Madden, forked out $5.7 million (£5m) for the home in 2015, so would have made a hefty profit from the off-market sale. However, Adele recently placed the property back on the market once more, this time with an asking price of $12 million (£10.5m).
The 1957 pad boasts five bedrooms and four bathrooms spread over 5,500 square feet, and though Adele only occupied it for a brief period, it clearly held a special place in her heart. After revealing her new look on social media, the singing sensation posted a series of photos captured at home in celebration of her birthday.
The listing bills the property as an “enchanting Hamptons-style estate", and with its beachy colour palette and leafy exterior, the home could certainly pass for a coastal getaway. The first floor includes an open-plan living and dining area, library, and family room, each outfitted with its own fireplace and opening out onto the verdant backyard.
The gourmet eat-in kitchen boasts a large marble island where guests can gather while the chef is at work, with stainless steel appliances, sleek white cabinets, and a white marble splashback. Like the living spaces, the kitchen has large glass doors which open out onto the back patio and yard.
The master suite is a spacious affair, featuring yet another fireplace, a king-size bed, lounge area and dual walk-in closets. The home offers two other spacious bedrooms, as well as a fourth room which could serve as either another guest room or playroom. Back on the main floor, other amenities include a laundry room, assistant's office, gym, and what is listed as a security room, no doubt a necessity for any A-list celebrity.
The magnificent master bathroom features dual sinks and a wet room, which includes a soaking tub, rain shower head and steam room, all enclosed by metal framed glass doors. An additional spa-quality bath can be found on the main floor.
The main floor opens out onto a trellis-covered outdoor living and dining area, complete with barbeque, which overlooks the home's meticulously manicured half-acre of land. The yard is equipped with high-quality AstroTurf, a vegetable garden, fruit trees, a pool/spa combo, a sports court and a garage. This veritable Eden makes the perfect escape for a high-profile resident, or an ideal location for hosting a bevy of celebrity neighbours. Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz all live close by...
In the November 2021 issue of British Vogue, Adele said, “The kind of house I have in LA I could never afford in London. Ever,” adding that she wanted “fresh air and somewhere where I could see the sky.” Her three Beverly Hills homes span a combined 18,000 square feet and cost her $25.4 million (£22m). To compare, in 2021, a 18,000-square-foot penthouse in London had a $159,000 (£182m) asking price.
At the beginning of 2022, news broke that Adele was reportedly about to become the owner of Sylvester Stallone's lavish Beverly Hills mansion. According to TMZ, the star had entered into escrow (a contractual arrangement preceding a sale) for the massive home, and what's more, she was getting it for a hugely reduced price.
Stallone first listed the home for $110 million (£96m) in January 2021 but he dropped the price twice, first to $85 million (£74m) in May '21 and then again to $80 million (£70m) in October, according to the listing. TMZ reported that Adele knocked the price down even further and paid $58 million (£50.1m) for the house.
Bought by Sly in the late 90s, Adele's new abode sits at the end of the exclusive Beverly Park enclave, with celebrity residents including Justin Bieber and Denzel Washington. Hidden behind a gated driveway, the sprawling home is the perfect purchase for the privacy-loving superstar.
The lavish mansion is a world away from Adele's fondness for neutral décor, with vibrant and colourful furniture dotted around the home. The two-storey hallway leads through to the formal living and dining rooms, which sit alongside this family room that's been decked out with a piano and pool table.
Not short of lavish amenities, the mega-mansion is perfect for one of the world's best-selling music artists. A home screening room sits alongside a state-of-the-art gym, a cigar room with its very own air-filtration system and a stunning custom bar.
One of the largest homes in the Beverly Park area, Stallone decided to part ways with the property to move to Palm Beach, Florida where he bought a huge estate for $35 million (£30.5m). However, with impressive rooms such as this home office, we can't see why he'd want to ever leave!
Perfect for entertaining, the property also boasts a stunning kitchen. With not one, but two massive islands, the light and bright space also features a wood-panelled casual lounging area with a plush sofa.
Spread over 21,000 square feet, the huge residence has a total of eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. With fresh white walls, marble surfaces and double doors leading out to a balcony, this ensuite space is the ultimate private oasis.
Heading outside, the spectacular grounds are spread over three-and-a-half acres. Home to a guest house designed by famed architect Richard Landry, Adele can host her friends and family when they visit from England.
Within the guesthouse is a private haven. Arched doorways separate the living, dining and games room, whilst upstairs two bedrooms look out over the manicured lawns.
Sitting high on an elevated position, almost every room of the home enjoys spectacular views out over the Los Angeles skyline, with the formal dining room no exception. Sitting just off the kitchen in a huge glass atrium, the stunning space is surrounded by tall windows and double doors that lead outside to the perfectly manicured grounds.
Elsewhere on the grounds, you'll find a putting green, infinity pool, eight-car garage and an art studio. Like something from a 5-star resort, Adele can spend her days strolling around the sprawling lawns and relaxing on the vast patios.
However, the sale almost didn't come to fruition as Adele stipulated one major deal breaker. A huge fan of the Rocky movies, Adele said that she would only buy the property if Stallone left his bronze statue of Rocky Balboa that adorns the poolside. The action hero told the Wall Street Journal that he had wanted to take the sculpture with him but Adele had insisted: "That’s a no deal. That’s gonna blow the whole deal."
So what next for our favourite singer? With the public and press as enamoured with her as ever, there's no stopping her. From a modest apartment in Tottenham to multimillion-dollar mansions and regal English estates, Adele has come a long way from her North London roots and we can't wait to see what she adds to her property portfolio next.
