How Jenny from the block became a real estate mogul
Hollywood star, entrepreneur and hit-maker Jennnifer Lopez has come a long way from her humble beginnings in the Bronx. With a successful career spanning three decades and a net worth estimated at $400 million (£298m), J.Lo is now one of the biggest stars on the planet.
The singer owns homes worth around $103 million (£77m) and has been a savvy investor on her way to the top. As she strikes out on her own in the wake of her split from Ben Affleck, what's next for J.Lo's real estate journey?
Click or scroll to take a closer look at the singer's property portfolio, past and present...
Where does J.Lo live?
Prior to her separation from Ben Affleck in April 2024, J.Lo resided in the former couple's $61 million (£47.7m) Beverly Hills home, purchased in the spring of 2023. However, a month after they parted ways, the house was back on the market and is yet to secure a buyer. J.Lo filed for divorce from Affleck in August 2024, citing irreconcilable differences.
Lopez is said to be house hunting in LA, though the singer has no shortage of real estate to reside in while she searches for the perfect property. J.Lo has reportedly spent considerable time at her home in the Hamptons since the split and also owns a mansion on an exclusive island in Miami.
Jenny from the block
Life is pretty complicated for the actress and singer right now, so let's wind back to when things were a lot more simple.
A world away from the glitz and glamour that surrounds her today, Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on 24th July 1969. The middle child of three sisters, the family lived in Castle Hill, a residential neighbourhood in the Bronx, New York. J.Lo's childhood home was a tiny apartment, but the Lopez clan soon upsized into a place big enough for their growing family.
Where is J.Lo from?
J.Lo is famously proud of her roots and has referenced them throughout her career, most notably in her hit song 'Jenny from the Block'. Perhaps this two-storey house on Blackrock Avenue in the Bronx was the first to inspire her when the family moved in.
J.Lo's father, David, worked as a computer technician and her mother, Guadalupe, was a homemaker, so buying a residence this size was a big achievement for the family. The 1,500-square-foot (139sqm) clapboard house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Jennifer Lopez's acting debut
Jennifer shared a room with her two sisters, Lynda and Leslie, so had very little private space of her own. Downstairs, the kitchen and living room were cosy and had everything that the family could need. The house was last on the market in 2009 and sold for an estimated $439,000 (£329k).
While still living in Blackrock Avenue, J.Lo started singing and dancing lessons at the age of five. She excelled in the performing arts during her final year of high school, where she heard about a film casting for production My Little Girl. She made her acting debut as Myra in the 1986 movie. After working on the film, she joined a dance college in Manhattan at the age of 18.

Growing up in New York
J.Lo moved out of her parents' Bronx home when she was 18 and was effectively homeless; she had no permanent base for a few months.
Determined to pursue a full-time career in dance, she slept on the sofa of her dance studio, the Ballet Hispánico centre on the Upper West Side. Finally, a few months later she landed her first gig, a dancing job that would take her to Europe.
J.Lo's big break
On her return to the US in the early 1990s, J.Lo threw herself into auditions and got her first big break when she was picked to be a 'Fly Girl' dancer in season three of American comedy In Living Color.
Finally getting her chance in the spotlight, the soon-to-be star moved to Los Angeles. Between 1991 and 1996, she landed various high-profile backing dancer spots with huge pop acts like New Kids On The Block and Janet Jackson.
Inspired by the Bronx
From her 1997 star turn in Latin biopic Selena to her first major Hollywood role opposite Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in Money Train, J.Lo's acting career was going from strength to strength. It was during this time that she also cut her first demo, in Spanish, which caught the ear of Tommy Mottola at Sony Music.
In 1999, J.Lo finally got her first hit with 'If You Had My Love' and her debut album On the 6, inspired by the subway line in New York City, which the star used to travel on from the Bronx.

J.Lo's first mansion
With her first number-one single and album under her belt, J.Lo was finally bringing home the bacon. In 2000, she invested in her first-ever luxury home, the beginning of her huge property portfolio.
Located in a private gated community called The Summit, the seven-bedroom home overlooks Beverly Hills and Studio City. The star splashed out $4.3 million (£3.2m) on the exclusive home and, as with many things in her amazing career, the gamble paid off...

The main house has 15,000 square feet (1,393sqm) of living space with 11 bedrooms and its very own theatre. Lopez put the home on the market in 2004 and sold it to nightclub owner Sam Nazarian for $12.5 million (£9.4m), making a hefty profit.
The grounds include a large pool and spa, a tennis court, a guesthouse with its very own gym and a large outdoor living space complete with sofas, fireplace and exterior kitchen. In fact, J.Lo loved the grounds so much, she chose it as the location for her wedding to Marc Anthony in June 2004.

J.Lo's Miami beachfront retreat
After the continued success of her first album, J.Lo went on to purchase a second luxury home in 2002: this beachfront mansion in Miami for an undisclosed amount. The Spanish-style home is situated on just over 1.2 acres (0.5ha) of land, peppered with manicured gardens and swaying palm trees.
The property has a 60-foot-long (18m) swimming pool and spa, a 6,000-gallon (22,700l) koi pond, a coral stone deck, a cabana and an incredible outdoor kitchen. It also features a dock that has room for several large boats, as well as 200 feet (61m) of clear waterfront on Biscayne Bay.

As well as its large formal rooms, balconies and terraces, the home has seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. It also has a lift and a spiral stairwell featuring a wrought-iron banister, arched arcades and limestone floors and a two-storey rotunda foyer.
Built in 1929, it oozes 1920s classic Mediterranean charm and features a theatre, wine cellar and a grand formal dining room with cloister windows and stone floors, as well as an interior courtyard.

Upstairs, the master bedroom alone measures 1,000 square feet (93sqm) and the floor is made from 150-year-old hardwood. Comprising three bedrooms knocked into one, the suite has a terrace, gym, office and an ensuite bathroom.
The singer only owned the house for three years however, selling up in 2005 to healthcare entrepreneur Mark Gainor and his wife for $13.9 million (£10.5m), according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com.The sale came shortly after her very public split from Ben Affleck the first time around in 2004.

The new owners spent a whopping $11 million (£8.2m) on renovation work, including the spacious kitchen, which is decorated in neutral colours much like the rest of the house, with a large island and exposed beams. Singer Phil Collins became the next high-profile owner in 2015 when he bought the iconic home for $33 million (£24.7m).
J.Lo and Marc Anthony's Long Island estate
Before tying the knot with J.Lo in 2004, Marc Anthony purchased this Georgian-style brick mansion in Brookeville, Long Island in late 2000 for $3.7 million (£2.8m). J.Lo moved in after the wedding and in 2008, she bought a second house across the street for just over $2 million (£1.5m).
The couple hired interior designer Thom Filicia to makeover the interiors of the 10,500-square-foot (975sqm) mansion, which offers 10 bedrooms and eight-and-a-half bathrooms. When their twins were born in 2008, the stars decided to raise them there for the foreseeable future.

The house isn't short of luxury amenities and even includes this fully equipped cinema and a recording studio. The main living spaces include a vast reception room that spans the full width of the mansion, a wood-panelled library, a study and a sunroom.
The eat-in kitchen with its slab marble worktops and a double-wide centre island was perfect for the family and many of the rooms feature lacquered oak floors and fireplaces. Outside, the estate is dotted with cedar, beech and cypress trees and features a bluestone terrace that overlooks the swimming pool, tennis courts and a Colonial-style guesthouse.

Upstairs, there are five guest bedrooms and a fun four-bed bunkroom. The huge master suite features a marble bathroom with a fireplace, custom-fitted dressing rooms and an upper level with an office space and full-service beauty salon.
Less than a year after their divorce in 2014, Marc Anthony put the home on the market with Dolly Lenz Real Estate for $12 million (£9m), eventually selling in 2017 for $4.5 million (£3.3m).

J.Lo's Hidden Hills estate
While still married to Marc Anthony, the Bronx-born superstar bought this three-acre (1.2ha) estate in early 2010 for $8.2 million (£6.1m). The sprawling mansion comprises two huge buildings, which include a spacious main house and an entertainment pavilion linked by an interior bridge, making it the perfect party pad.

Built in 1987, the entrance of the main house opens into a double-height reception hall, which leads through to this formal living and dining room, both with wood-burning fireplaces.
The traditional-style house, which has 17,129 square feet (1,591sqm) of living space, was completely renovated by Lopez during her ownership and contains both dance and recording studios and a 20-seat screening theatre, so she could work from home and still be there for the twins.

At the back of the home is the less formal family living area, which is more relaxed in style and includes this cosy snug where we can imagine J.Lo curling up with a good book. On the ground floor, there's also a huge gourmet kitchen and adjoining family room with a built-in wet bar which opens to the outdoor living room and pool area.
Upstairs meanwhile, are eight bedrooms, three on the main level, plus four more in the north wing, with each including an ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

In January 2015, the star put the home on the market for $17 million (£12.7m). According to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, the price was lowered to $12.5 million (£9.4m) and it eventually sold in March 2017 for $10 million (£7.5m).

J.Lo’s Hamptons estate
Already worth $250 million (£187m) with an annual income from American Idol of at least $12 million (£9m), it’s no wonder that J.Lo decided to invest nearly $10 million (£7.5m) of her hard-earned cash on a beautiful home in the Hamptons in 2013, according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com.
Built in 2004, the 8,660-square-foot (804sqm) property looks surprisingly traditional for a building that was less than a decade old at the time of the purchase. It sits on three acres (1.2ha) of grounds in Water Mill, the Hamptons, close to Mecox Bay.

Located on a quiet cul de sac, the elegant property is incredibly private and has a gorgeous heated pool in the garden.
Plus, it's close enough to New York, so the star could attend to all her many business ventures at the time, including fashion and perfume lines and even her own range of mobile phones created in collaboration with Verizon, which were targeted at the Latino market.
According to The New York Post, the star had been looking for a property on Long Island for years and visited the mansion several times.

Already separated from Marc Anthony at the time of the sale, she was accompanied on the viewings by her then-boyfriend Casper Smart and her two children Emme and Max.
Stepping inside, the eat-in kitchen has bar seating, a central island, a chef’s stove and two huge, state-of-the-art refrigerators.
Long Island is traditionally thought of as the home of America’s “old money”, but we’re sure residents were more than happy to have Lopez as their new neighbour. After all the star topped the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2012, earning $52 million (£39m) that year alone.

After her divorce from Marc Anthony was finalised in 2014, J.Lo went on a bit of a real estate shopping spree. Not far from the Hamptons estate she still owns, she snapped up a penthouse in Manhattan, New York towards the end of 2014 for just over $20 million (£15m)...
J.Lo's New York penthouse
Any global star has need of a base in New York City, and J.Lo opted for this 6,500-square-foot (604sqm) duplex on the top two floors of the historic Whitman Mansion. Unusually for New York, the home has 3,000 square feet (278sqm) of outdoor space, encompassing several terraces and even a putting green, with stunning views of New York.
When Lopez decided to sell up, she listed the home in October 2017 for $27 million (£20m). It took seven years to sell the property and she finally closed the deal in April 2024 to an unknown buyer for an undisclosed sum, according to The New York Post.
J.Lo's Bel Air mansion
In August 2016, J.Lo bought an incredible French-inspired mansion in Bel Air for $28 million (£21m). According to Vanity Fair, she purchased the property with her young twins in mind. Built in 1940, the nearly 13,000-square-foot (1,207sqm) home was designed by architect Samuel Marx.

With plenty to keep J.Lo's twins occupied, the back garden is full of fun activities and features, from mini-golf to an infinity-edge swimming pool and a vegetable garden.
However, after toying with the idea of renovating the home, J.Lo instead decided to place the property back on the market for a whopping $42.5 million (£31.8m), which dropped to $39.9 million (£29m) in April 2023. Architectural Digest reported that the property finally sold for $34 million (£25.5m).

J.Lo began dating former baseball player and businessman Alex Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod, in 2017. In March 2018, the couple purchased a condo on the 36th floor of this prestigious high-rise building, known as 432 Park Avenue, for $15.3 million (£11.5m) according to Town & Country Magazine.
Offering 4,000 square feet (371sqm), it's quite a bit smaller than the superstar's other properties, but its swanky zip code made it a great investment.

The apartment features minimal décor, herringbone oak floors and huge windows that look out over the Manhattan skyline.
It may of course merely have been an investment property, as the couple sold it on within the year for $17.5 million (£13.1m), making them a profit of over $2 million (£1.5m) on the deal. Talk about property flippers!

J.Lo and A-Rod then went on to snap up this Malibu beach house for a cool $6.6 million (£5m) in January 2019, two months before their engagement. Captured on video by the Malibu Life Team for Compass, the 4,404-square-foot (408sqm) home previously belonged to Entourage actor Jeremy Piven, who had spent $1.5 million (£1.1m) on renovations to the home.
Luxury amenities include an upstairs screening room, a Jacuzzi on the main floor's outdoor deck and an extensive entertainment unit on the lower level, featuring a wet bar and sauna.

J.Lo and Ben Affleck reunite
J.Lo and Alex Rodriguez broke off their engagement in April 2021 after four years together.
Not long after the split, the star rekindled her romance with her old flame Ben Affleck. After months of speculation, J.Lo officially confirmed that she and Affleck were back together nearly 20 years after they started dating the first time around. In the interim, both had married and had children, but were full of hope and excitement that this time their relationship was for keeps.

Jen and Ben were spotted on this balcony early in their renewed relationship. The 10,000-square-foot (929sqm) house belongs to jewellery designer Paul Morelli who bought it for $17.5 million (£13.1m).
A promotional video on YouTube shows a stunning modern house with 11 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, a separate guesthouse, a gym, an office and three garages. The home sits on a huge 27,000-square-foot (2,500sqm) lot and with a barbecue area, swimming pool and Jacuzzi, as well as a dock and boat lift.
J.Lo and Ben Affleck's Beverly Hills stop-gap
J.Lo and Ben Affleck were serious about putting down roots together and began house hunting in earnest. With five children between them, their list of requirements was long and they viewed many homes before they found the right property, with a few deals falling through in the process.

J.Lo and Ben Affleck get married
After getting engaged in April 2022 for the second time since 2002, the couple finally married in July 2022 in an intimate Las Vegas wedding. The singer announced their marriage in her fan newsletter, On the J Lo, with the heading “We did it”. The marriage licence filing showed that Lopez had taken the name Jennifer Affleck, according to The Daily Mail.
After putting J.Lo's long-term Bel Air estate on the market for $42 million (£31.4m) in February 2023, Bennifer were ready to stop renting and finally find their own long-term love nest, following a lot of high-profile back-and-forth on the property market.
J.Lo and Ben Affleck's huge Bel Air estate
After two years of searching and at least two failed escrows, the pair finally settled on their forever home when they snapped up this sprawling mansion on 31 May 2023. TMZ was the first to report that Lopez and Affleck officially bought the LA estate for $60.9 million (£51m).
The 38,000-square-foot (3,530sqm) Wallingford Estate comes with 12 bedrooms and 24 bathrooms. But did they get a good deal for their new pad?
J.Lo and Ben Affleck's huge Bel Air estate
Originally on the market at $135 million (£101m), which would have broken a record for the most expensive home ever sold in Los Angeles County, the duo snapped up the home at a steal. They reportedly paid in cash and settled at less than half the asking price. What a bargain!
The 90210 estate sits beyond a hedge-lined, double-gated entrance that's ideal for celebrities keen to protect their privacy.

Newly renovated, the sprawling two-storey residence was developed by Los Angeles property developer Gala Asher according to property website The Real Deal and boasts a whole host of VIP-ready amenities inside. The estate includes a cinema, a wine cellar, an at-home spa, sauna and massage room, plus hair and nail salons.
There's an impressive indoor sports facility, which features basketball and pickleball courts, as well as an enormous pool thought to be the largest ever built in the Beverly Hills area.
Sadly, by April 2024, less than a year after they bought it, reports suggested the house was back on the market and the couple had separated.

Jen and Ben divorce
On 20 August 2024, J.Lo filed for divorce from Affleck, citing irreconcilable differences. According to TMZ, J.Lo and Affleck did not sign a prenup, which could lead to a battle over assets including their Beverly Hills mansion. The former couple has focused their attention on shifting the home as they prepare to go their separate ways. Unfortunately, a prospective sale fell through in September 2024. According to British newspaper the Daily Mail, the buyers, a couple from New Jersey, pulled out of the $64 million (£48m) deal following a death in the family.
Meanwhile, Affleck, who moved to a rental after the couple's separation, is said to have purchased a $20.5 million (£15.3m) home near Brentwood on 24 July 2024, his estranged wife’s birthday, while J.Lo is busy house-hunting.
Unstoppable J.Lo
As the superstar searches for a new LA base, J.Lo has reportedly been spending time in the Hamptons over the summer of 2024 – a no doubt welcome break from the Hollywood paparazzi. Now that she's returned to Tinsletown, she's said to be looking at properties in Beverly Hills. We have a feeling a sale might be just around the corner.
Jenny from the Block may have had a rough year, but the star has seemingly bounced back. She was all smiles as she celebrated her birthday at her Hamptons mansion, telling her fans on Instagram: “Besides my family and friends you have always been there for me in the good times and in the tough times.”
