Life during a pandemic
Built in the 1900s, with outbuildings dating back to 1920, the property offered a snapshot of life following the Spanish Flu pandemic, which ravaged the world and the state of New York from 1918 to 1920.
The original homeowners may have resembled this family during the outbreak, seen wearing protective facemasks, much like life during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

An enigmatic approach
Barely visible from the main road, a gravelled driveway leads visitors into what appears at first glance to be dense woodland. However, venture a little further and a white clapboard house emerges from within the trees, fringed by leafy boughs and dappled with sunlight.
A low stone wall marks the boundary of the 175-acre estate and the entrance to this incredible time capsule home, which would have been perfect for self-isolating.

Shrouded in intrigue
The path has long since been covered by a carpet of mossy grass, but the grandeur of the Victorian architecture hints at the property’s elusive past.
A veranda runs the length of the front of the house, the carved wooden balustrades lending it a fairytale-like quality. Even up close, the three-storey house is partially concealed by trees and shrubs, only adding to the air of mystery.

A regal welcome
Inside, the house was a treasure trove of antique furniture and vintage curiosities. Every aspect of the grand living room revealed some new point of interest; a wooden duck perched high on the picture rail or a china teapot nestled beside aged leather tomes.
From the carved secretary desk to the flamboyant brocade sofa, each item offered a glimpse of bygone days.

A room with a view
At one end of the lounge, a large sash window looks out over the verdant lawn. Two angled accent chairs with carved cabriole legs allude to lazy afternoons spent sipping tea and conversing with friends.
As you look at this picture, partially opened drawers offer to spill their secrets, while a mysterious urn sits conspicuously to the right of the reading nook.

Cosy and characterful
Facing the grand wooden staircase, a red velvet armchair and comfy sofa create a cosy reading corner. Piled with floral cushions and lace doilies, they add a warm, homely touch to the grand space.
It's easy to imagine the former owners curled up with a good book on a bitter winter's night...

Intricate panelling
Talk about time-warp interiors. One of the most show-stopping features of the living room is this ornate curved wall. Clad in wooden panels engraved with intricate floral motifs, it's stained in a rich walnut hue that creates the perfect backdrop for the previous owner's collection of antique plates.
Above, exquisite mouldings encircle the upper wall and ceiling, demonstrating the best of 1900s craftsmanship.

Period patterns
In contrast to the dark wooden grandeur of the living room, the kitchen has a fresh and airy feel. Light floods in through the sash window, illuminating the chequered blue-and-white floor and chintzy magnolia wow-factor wallpaper.
Matching china mugs hang above the cooker while a collection of oven mitts adorn the wall by the cupboard. We wonder if the new owners hung on to any of these items?

Domestic touches
Though the square, white wall tiles are a little austere, the personal touches left by the former residents gave life and personality to the space.
A collection of miscellaneous objects hanging on the back wall offers an intriguing glimpse into their everyday lives, conjuring up scenes of busy family life in the heart of the countryside.

The stately dining room
In the dining room, it's difficult not to be struck by the grandeur of the decoration. The focal point of the space is a magnificent antique sideboard with a carved apron and glossy mahogany finish.
Laden with crockery, it would have been used to serve up formal dinners and sumptuous holiday feasts.

Delicate details
Above the dining table, a striking chandelier hangs from an ornate ceiling rose. Made from iron with an aged bronze finish, it features a wreath of carved fruits and four lamp holders designed to resemble acorn cups.
A product of the movement, these stylish lights were incredibly popular in the early 20th century.

Stunning stained glass
Among the home’s many period features are the colourful stained-glass windows in the lounge and dining room. In the dining room, the leaded windows add a light wash of colour to the rich brown tones that dominate the space.
First popularised during the Gothic Revival of the 1800s, the Art Nouveau movement saw a swing towards nature-inspired designs with bold, curved shapes in a range of different hues.

Perfectly preserved bedroom
Upstairs, the property boasts four spacious bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each one was a faithful homage to the 1920s with the original décor and furniture all beautifully preserved.
Note the tasselled floral quilts covering the twin beds and the matching Wedgwood-style cameos in this light-filled guest bedroom.

Vintage luxury
The bathrooms too were frozen in time with mosaic tile floors and black-and-white marble walls. The ribcage shower with its clawfoot tray and burnished silver finish would have been the height of sophistication back in the day.
We're hoping the modern-day owners of this home left that large roll-top tub with ceramic lever taps and a vintage bath rack. They are the perfect finishing touch to the lavish space.

Exquisite lighting
Throughout the home, elegant design details and personal touches hinted at the building’s history. From framed black-and-white photographs to secret drawers overflowing with yellowed documents, every item is another piece of the puzzle.
We wonder who picked out this gorgeous orb chandelier with its leaded floral design and beribboned ceiling frieze.

Grand landscaped grounds
The property's large sash windows and French doors look out over expansive grounds. The 175-acre estate is composed primarily of forest preserve, offering owners significant tax breaks on the proviso that they protect and manage the land.
A manicured garden and leafy woods create the perfect setting for this dreamy home. And with all that land, there's more than just the large house on the grounds...

Expansive outbuildings
As a bonus, the country estate comprises an array of additional outbuildings. While the gorgeous original four-bedroom main house is undoubtedly the star attraction, there is also a three-car garage with a loft space ripe for conversion, plus a cosy guest cottage.

Charming old schoolhouse
If that wasn't enough, the property also includes this charming shingle-clad schoolhouse that's been transformed into a family home.
A potential rental that could offer a healthy stream of income, there's scope to convert the other outbuildings into holiday homes or long-term lets too. With only minor restoration work required across the structures, this historic lot was a real gem when it hit the market in 2019.

A bird's-eye view
To top it all off, the estate's location is second to none. Situated on the outskirts of Hunter, a small town nestled at the foot of the imposing Hunter Mountain, the historic spot became a popular tourist destination following the construction of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad.
Today, Hunter is famous for its ski slopes and its picturesque countryside, which is part of the Catskill Forest Preserve. Sounds like a wonderful place to call home!

A new beginning?
With its fairytale setting and gorgeous time capsule interior, this house offers a real slice of American history. While the original occupants lived on through the perfectly preserved décor, it’s time for new owners to continue their legacy.
The enigmatic home came to market in 2019 for just shy of $1.5 million (£1.2m) but it is unclear if it sold. Whatever the case, it hit the market again in 2020, this time for double the original price at $2.9 million (£2.3m) according to Zillow. In 2021 it was listed yet again, this time for $1.6 million (£1.3m). The listing was removed, so we don't know if anyone took the opportunity to buy the home, but we're jealous if they did!
