Sometimes celebrities just want to lay low and escape the limelight, so it's no wonder that many opt to buy lavish rural estates away from urban settings and sprying eyes. From Tom Cruise's secluded ranch in Colorado to Patrick Swayze's equestrian estate outside Los Angeles, we’re handing over the keys to the sprawling ranches and farms of some of the world's most famous faces.

Best known for his roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, Patrick Swayze began his career as a dancer before finding success on Broadway and then Hollywood. He partnered with Keanu Reeves in surf movie Point Break in 1991, the same year he was named 'The Sexiest Man Alive' by People Magazine.
He was married to his teenage sweetheart Lisa Niemi and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008, passing away aged just 57 in September 2009.
Married in 1975, the couple gave up on having children following a miscarriage in 1990, and instead invested their time and energy into their stunning equestrian ranch, Rancho Bizarro, in the San Fernando Valley on the northern edges of Los Angeles. Niemi remained on the 4.5-acre estate after Swayze’s death, but it was eventually put up for sale for $4.5 million (£3.6m) in September of 2023, according to Mansion Global.
The single-storey house features a living room with a beamed cathedral ceiling, a fireplace, an antler chandelier, hardwood floors, French doors and wood-panelled walls. The most recent owner is not a person, but an LLC tied to philanthropist and oil heiress Aileen Getty, which purchased the ranch from Niemi in 2015 for $2.9 million (£2.3m).
Getty recently 'swapped' homes with Brad Pitt, purchasing his Los Feliz estate for $33m (£26m), while the actor snapped up the heiress’ smaller mid-century modern home for $5.5 million (£4.4m).
According to the listing, the ranch features a 1940s California ranch-style house with 3,516 square feet of interior space, three bedrooms, four bathrooms and one partial bathroom. The main bedroom features a cosy fireplace, double doors that open on to a patio and a bathroom with tiled steps up to a soaking tub.
There’s a farmhouse sink and large windows in the kitchen, which opens on to a glass atrium with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The actor passed away surrounded by family and friends at the ranch on 14 September 2009 after a 20-month-long illness. Working almost up until the end, the Swayze cherished his life on the ranch, with its extensive meadows and free-form pool, where he and Niemi, who were married for over three decades, shared a passion for horseback riding and flying. “He lived life to the fullest,” co-star Keanu Reeves said in an interview with The Daily Mail.
Domestic goddess and America’s sweetheart, Martha Stewart has had an illustrious career in all things house and garden since the 1980s. It stands to reason, then, that her own home is an impressive 153-acre farmstead that she’s beautifully maintained since purchasing it in 2000 for $15.2 million (£12m).
Dating back to 1700s, the historic and sprawling Cantitoe Corners estate in Katonah, New York boasts a wealth of lush gardens, greenhouses and horse stables across the grounds.

According to the New York Times, Martha enlisted the help of renowned architect Allan Greenber to create a new kind of farm, with horses, cutting gardens and henhouses. Alongside grazing paddocks for her five Fresian horses seen here, the 153-acre farm also houses multiple cats and dogs, chinchillas, canaries, and parakeets as well as donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, quail, peacocks, and homing pigeons, with birdhouses for birds, owls, and bats.

The star's stunning Telluride ranch spans an amazing 320 acres, so there's no chance of prying eyes. The veteran actor bought the property in the early 1990s and spent several years building a star-worthy estate.
The ranch was the setting of Cruise's famous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2008, and where he captured the first images of his daughter Suri, so it obviously holds a special place in the star's heart.
The luxurious remote home is surrounded by national forest land and lies close to Telluride's sought-after ski slopes and golf courses. Inside, the 10,000-square-foot residence has vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and unforgettable alpine views.

American icon Jane Fonda has been in the public eye for decades, so it makes sense that the actor and activist likes to spend her downtime away from the limelight. And what better place to do so than at a secluded ranch in the heart of New Mexico?
Fonda reportedly purchased the 2,300-acre estate in 2000 for an undisclosed sum and we can definitely understand what drew her to the pile. Known as Forked Lightning Ranch, the property spans almost four miles of New Mexico's famed Pecos River and offers exceptional landscaped grounds – not to mention total seclusion.
Fonda spent a number of years making improvements to the property. Thankfully, the Grace and Frankie star maintained the home's distinctive hacienda aesthetic and also undertook a barn renovation, creating a twelve-stall stable, office and gym. She is said to have later added the River House, which became the estate's main residence.
The River House offers 9,600 square feet of inside space and plenty of characterful touches. The Spanish Colonial-style home featured in the March 2014 issue of Architectural Digest, and is said to feature numerous energy-efficient elements and sustainable materials, making this eco home both stylish and totally sustainable. It offers six bedrooms, four bathrooms, rustic beamed ceilings, a swimming pool and even a bell tower.
Forked Lightning Ranch also has an original barn and a log cottage with 3,400 square feet of inside space – perfect for VIP guests. In 2015, Fonda decided to part ways with the property and placed it up for sale. It eventually sold for $19.5 million (£15.4m), after lingering on the market for almost a year.
