Owning an expansive farm or ranch surrounded by picturesque landscapes is a dream for many, but for celebrities, the dream often becomes a reality.

From vast estates on sweeping plains to opulent ranches tucked away in rugged mountain ranges, these properties provide both secluded retreats from public life and opportunities to be with nature.

Domestic goddess and America’s sweetheart, Martha Stewart has had an illustrious career in all things house and garden since the 1980s.

It stands to reason, then, that her own home is an impressive 153-acre (62ha) farmstead that she’s beautifully maintained since purchasing it in 2000 for $15.2 million (£12m).

Dating back to the 1700s, the historic and sprawling Cantitoe Corners estate in Katonah, New York has a wealth of lush gardens, greenhouses and horse stables across the grounds.

This imposing building may look like the main house, but is actually Martha’s so-called 'Summer House'. According to Martha’s Instagram post, it is "used primarily as my library for my book collection". Originally built in 1776, Martha "rebuilt it completely on the old foundation in 2001".

According to magazine House Digest, the three-storey, 12-bedroom main residence is referred to as 'Winter House' by Martha and her staff, complete with an impressive chef-style kitchen (of course), porch room, gym, as well as a dining room and specified areas for gathering. 

Another view of the estate shows the so-called ‘White Garden’ abloom with linden trees, topiary viburnum and species peonies. 

Outside, an expansive dining table stretches out awaiting Martha’s guests for an alfresco lunch we assume was particularly delicious from the hostess with the mostest.

Guests could enjoy admiring the grounds, full with daffodil fields, a sprawling vegetable garden and a peony garden with around 200 different plant varieties and plentiful wildlife according to website Distractify.

According to the New York Times, Martha enlisted the help of renowned architect Allan Greenber to create 'a new kind of farm', with horses, cutting gardens and henhouses.

Alongside grazing paddocks for her five Friesian horses seen here, the 153-acre (62ha) farm also houses multiple cats and dogs, chinchillas, canaries and parakeets. There are also donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, quail, peacocks and homing pigeons, with birdhouses for birds, owls and bats. Phew!

Martha’s menagerie has, unsurprisingly, been a Certified Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation since 2007.

Famous mother and daughter duo, Debbie Reynolds of Singin’ in the Rain fame and Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher, once lived in a huge estate named Freedom Farms located near the town of Creston, California.

Media site SFGATE reported that the property was purchased by Debbie’s son, Todd Fisher, in the 1980s for his mother. It was meant as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood life.

Having been on and off the market since 2014, the working family ranch last sold for just shy of $2.9 million (£2.3m) in December of 2022.

Described as a rustic retreat, the 44-acre (18ha) farm hosts horse ranches, rolling fields and vineyards as well as a small refurbished general store, selling local cheeses and wines. Talk about the good life!

Nestled in the heart of San Luis Obispo County, the seven-bedroom main residence spans 7,800-square-foot (725sqm) of lavish living space.

Built in 1991, the listing described how Freedom Farms was the 'site of hundreds of gatherings, sing-alongs and served as a tranquil retreat for Hollywood's elite'. If those walls could talk!

The Hollywood actor and songstress would certainly have enjoyed entertaining plenty of guests and family here, with a grand piano drawing focus in the living room, surrounded by deep wood panelling, large fireplace and high ceilings for fabulous acoustics.

Elsewhere, the estate displays a rustic, homely farmhouse style alongside more luxury features such as a private screening room, personal gym and decadent dark green kitchen.

Across the grounds, the estate boasts two outbuildings kitted out as a recording studio as well as its own lake and hot springs. A real rural retreat.

Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges once owned a rather stylish ranch in Montecito, an exclusive celebrity hotspot in Santa Barbara.

The Californian retreat dates to 1919 and was designed by esteemed architect James Osborne Craig, making it something of a historic local landmark. An apt choice for the True Grit actor, the ranch is the perfect pad for anyone with a love of horses and the great outdoors.

The Spanish Revival house is charming and traditional in equal measure, with its white rendered exterior decorated with crawling vines. Inside, the property has bags of wow-factor following a comprehensive renovation carried out by the star in 2016.

Blending original features with contemporary touches, the dwelling boasts hardwood floors, leaded windows and vaulted ceilings, while extensive glazing allows for uninterrupted views across the estate.

The single-storey pad provides two and a half bathrooms and three bedrooms, many of which are decorated with original fireplaces. The master suite is an oasis of calm with a seating area, an ensuite complete with a walk-in shower and a tub, as well as French doors that lead into the garden.

Elsewhere, there's also a brand-new kitchen with granite countertops and timber cabinets that match the cathedral-like ceiling.

The actor sold the property in 2019 to Oprah Winfrey for $6.9 million (£5.5m). It's thought that the TV star had her eye on the estate since 2015 when she purchased the neighbouring 23-acre (9ha) property known as Seamair Farm, which encompasses four houses and substantial equestrian facilities.

Including her vast Promised Land compound, this means that Oprah's property portfolio now spans 70 adjacent acres (28ha) of land within the same neighbourhood.

American singer-songwriter Carole King spent many years writing songs that were influenced by the stunning landscape of Idaho, USA that surrounded her home.

Positioned inside the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, her 128-acre (52ha) ranch belonged to King for more than 30 years, until she listed it for sale in 2015 for a substantial $9.9 million (£7.8m).

Known as the Robinson Bar Ranch, this stunning hideaway comes equipped with a 7,337-square-foot (682sqm) main residence, as well as several ranch buildings, a horse barn and endless land waiting to be explored.

Ideal for whitewater rafting, the Salmon River also runs directly through the estate, making this dreamy oasis the perfect spot for adrenaline junkies too.

The main house is cosy and traditional, with plenty of living space to play with. There's a lounge, a characterful dining room, den, commercial-grade kitchen, five bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There are also plenty of authentic features throughout the building, including exposed timber walls and ceilings, stone fireplaces and floors, authentic window shutters and rustic light fixtures.

There's also a detached recording studio with double-height windows and a second-floor apartment, where King likely penned some of her most acclaimed hits, including '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' and 'It Might as Well Rain Until September' – how rock 'n' roll is that?

Best known for playing Sandy in the iconic 1978 movie Grease, the late, great Olivia Newton-John lived on a sprawling ranch in New South Wales, Australia for almost four decades.

The Grammy Award-winning singer, who passed away in August 2022, purchased the 187-acre (76ha) estate a few years after the movie was released, but placed the property on the real estate market in 2019 for $3.7million (£2.9m).

The stunning Australian estate is located just outside the glistening coastal town of Byron Bay and borders the stunning landscapes of Victoria Park Nature Reserve.

Surrounded by an ancient rainforest, Newton-John is said to have planted more than 10,000 trees on the ranch over the years and its mature garden is truly spectacular as reported by British newspaper The Guardian.

With lawns stretching as far as the eye can see, the extensive lot comes with several dams and streams, a natural waterfall and a creek. The ultimate pad for those with horses or farmyard animals, there's plenty of space for livestock to roam.

The house itself is equally as stunning as the surrounding estate and was rebuilt by Newton-John in 2002. Offering four bedrooms, there's no shortage of charm thanks to the rustic stone fireplaces, log-burning stoves, natural pine floors and exposed ceiling beams.

The actor also decorated some of the walls with shells and pebbles that she collected from nearby beaches. As well as several cosy lounge spaces, there's a large farmhouse kitchen with a spacious dining area and a walk-in pantry.

Newton-John's former bedroom is one of the home's finest spaces, offering a walk-out balcony with truly breathtaking scenery. The spacious room also comes equipped with a four-poster bed, a dressing table and an intimate sitting area.

Elsewhere, there's a self-contained one-bedroom apartment with its own separate entrance, the perfect place to accommodate guests.

The French Country-inspired house offers three bathrooms in total, including this charming space. The elegant ensuite boasts stunning views, dual sinks and a roll-top bath beneath a large picture window.

Imagine taking a dip here, throwing open the shutters and soaking up views of the gorgeous rolling pastures beyond. As far as VIP interiors go, this sanctuary is up there with the best of them.

Hollywood mega-star Tom Cruise is reportedly worth $600 million (£475m), so it's no wonder he is the proud owner of some seriously envy-inducing homes.

The star's stunning Telluride ranch spans an amazing 320 acres (129ha), so there's no chance of prying eyes. The veteran actor bought the property in the early 1990s and spent several years building a star-worthy estate.

The ranch was the setting of Cruise's famous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2008, and where he captured the first images of his daughter Suri, so it obviously holds a special place in the star's heart.

The luxurious remote home is surrounded by national forest land and lies close to Telluride's sought-after ski slopes and golf courses. Inside, the 10,000-square-foot (929sqm) residence has vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and unforgettable alpine views.

Built from bleached cedar timbers and native stone, the custom mansion offers a total of four bedrooms. With wood pillars and exposed beam ceilings, the expansive lower level is home to a formal dining room, den and games room.

In addition to the main house, there's also a separate three-bedroom lodge, where Cruise has no doubt hosted plenty of VIP guests over the years.

Unsurprisingly, the pad is jam-packed full of luxury amenities, including a fitness centre, a state-of-the-art security system, a snowmelt system, a wet bar and underfloor heating.

In March 2021, Cruise decided to part ways with the gorgeous rural ranch, placing it on the market for a cool $39.5 million (£31.3m) and within a month, the luxurious home had secured a buyer. 

In addition to his Colorado home, Cruise is also said to own a luxurious penthouse apartment in the city of Clearwater, Florida, where the headquarters of Scientology is located. Cruise is perhaps one of the religion's most famous members. 

The king of McNuggets himself, Ray Kroc served as CEO of McDonald’s from 1967 to 1973 and is credited with turning it into the world’s most successful fast-food corporation.

After retiring from his McDonald’s empire, Kroc served as the owner of the Major League Baseball team the San Diego Padres until his death in 1984. By this time, he had accumulated a net worth of an estimated $600 million (£473m), or $1.9 billion (£1.5bn) in today’s money.

In 1966, not long after McDonald’s went public and commenced Kroc’s financial climb, the entrepreneur purchased this 554-acre (22ha) California ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley, near Santa Barbara.

The rustic retreat was intended to serve as both a private residence and a company think tank. In fact, some of the fast-food juggernaut’s most popular recipes were dreamed up right on the premises, including the McRib and the Egg McMuffin.

The property’s main lodge stretches across more than 17,000 square feet (1,579sqm), and boasts 20-bedroom suites, a dining room with the capacity to seat 100 and of course a commercial-grade kitchen up to the challenge of feeding all those people!

While the impressive property certainly offers plenty of scope for play in the form of various recreational amenities, including two pools and tennis courts, also on the premises is a large conference hall ideally proportioned for hosting large company gatherings.

The multifunctional estate, known as the Double Arch Ranch in honour of its creator’s famous logo, was last listed for $25 million (£19.7m).

Championship winning golfer who holds a coveted position in the World Golf Hall of Fame, Greg Norman boasts a net worth of $400 million (£316m).

In addition to his golfing career, the Australian athlete also harbours a passion for big game hunting and fishing, and for over 20 years has owned one of the most popular ranches dedicated to these pastimes in Colorado: Seven Lakes Ranch.

Set on a breathtaking 11,900 acres (4,815ha) in the White River Valley of the Flat Tops Mountains, the aptly named ranch includes several lakes and ponds, as well as a portion of the White River which runs through it.

The acreage comes with plenty of recreational opportunities, including a long-distance shooting range, sporting clays, horseback riding, biking, hiking, snowmobiling and ice skating, not to mention the plentiful hunting and fishing opportunities.

At the end of a long day of sportsmanship, guests can kick back in the spectacular lodge, a 13,907-square foot (1292sqm) log mansion designed to accommodate multiple parties and their families.

The lodge offers the perfect blend of rustic authenticity and sleek modern finishes, complete with large stone fireplaces, huge, exposed logs and enormous windows offering views of the lakes and river beyond.

And just in case the great outdoors doesn’t provide sufficient entertainment, the lodge comes replete with plenty of indoor venues for fun, including a home theatre, game room, bar and multiple dining venues.

Elsewhere on the grounds, there’s also a saloon-style dance hall and operations building, just in case you feel like hosting a barn dance without having to leave the premises!

In case there was any doubt as to the venue’s capacity to host such an event, the lodge includes eight guest suites, as well as an additional group of cabins on the estate. With vast dining and lounging spaces, as well as the seemingly endless grounds, this rural retreat was a beloved escape for the pro athlete for more than 20 years.

However, Norman finally sold the property in 2021 for his $40 million (£31.6m) asking price, a substantial appreciation from the $9.5 million (£7.5m) he originally bought it for.

Beloved crooner and star of the silver screen, Bing Crosby was a heartthrob in the 1940s and 50s. While the star spent much of his time out in Hollywood, he had a passion for ranch life, and at the height of his career in the 1940s began buying up land in Elko, Nevada.

At the peak of his real estate acquisition, Crosby owned a total of seven ranches, including the spectacular Lawson Ranch.

The ranch began as an 1860s pioneer homestead, with some of the oldest water rights in Nevada.

Today, the property is a fully operational cattle ranch, including its own aircraft hangar, airstrip and just under 3,000 acres (1,214ha) of land capable of accommodating 600 cow-calf pairs.

The property also includes irrigated hay fields and grasslands, multiple ponds, seasonal wildflowers, easy access to a national forest, mountain views and access to Foreman Creek which runs straight through the estate.

The ranch itself, meanwhile, is comprised of multiple buildings centred around a 5,000-square-foot (465sqm), five-bedroom, five-bath main residence currently configured as a bed & breakfast.

There are an additional three separate buildings which could be used as guest houses or staff housing, and two enclosed barns which, though originally intended for hay storage, could also be reimagined as event spaces or conference venues.

Constructed in the traditional log cabin style, the romantic ranch that Bing shared with wife Dixie until she passed in 1952 was last listed for sale in 2019 for $7.3 (£5.8m) million.

With potential to operate as a commercial cattle ranch, a family getaway or Western-inspired resort, the property certainly offered plenty of scope for development for the right investor.

Famously versatile, Johnny Depp has starred in hit films which range from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to Edward Scissor Hands to Finding Neverland.

A Kentucky native, Depp grew up surrounded by horse farms, so its no great surprise that he coveted one of his own as an adult, and in 1995, early on in his movie career, Depp bought a 41-acre (17ha) horse farm for his mother.

As Depp sold the Kentucky farm in 2001, he obviously missed its old Southern charms, opting to buy the stately white brick and clapboard-clad main house with its dramatic columned entryway back again in 2005.

Picture perfect inside as well as out, the 6,000-square-foot (64,583sqm) main house includes six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as a master suite, recently renovated kitchen, dining room, wet bar, family room and sunroom. There is also an additional guesthouse or manager’s quarters on the premises.

Including lush rolling acres, 15 stalls, ten paddocks and an automated watering system the farm certainly offers any four-legged inhabitants a luxurious lifestyle. The grounds also include a swimming pool and four-car garage, perfect for hosting guests for a horsey retreat.

The family-oriented farmstead is situated just two miles (3km) from Keeneland Race Course, providing easy access on race days.

Still, for all its many charms, Depp struggled to sell the farm on the regular market, originally listing it for $3.4 million (£2.7m), then being forced to reduce to $2.9 million (£2.3m).

The farm finally sold at auction in 2019 for the dramatically reduced price of $1,495,000 (£1.2m).

Since 2001, Gisele Bündchen has been one of the highest-paid models in the world. In 2007, she was the 16th-richest woman in the entertainment industry earning the top spot on Forbes top-earning models list in 2012.

Born and raised in Brazil, Gisele moved to America to pursue her modelling career, marrying football star Tom Brady in 2009 until they divorced in 2022. In September 2023, she purchased a spacious 7.5-acre (3ha) equestrian ranch in Southwest Ranches, Florida, allowing Vogue magazine a tour of the sprawling property.

As she led Vogue around the property, Gisele explains: "It feels like Brazil. I love how warm people are [in Florida]. My kids love it too. We can have a life outdoors here, we do a lot of things outdoors."

The nine-bedroom property comes with a full-size soccer field, tennis and volleyball courts, an infinity pool and a hot tub, plus a state-of-the-art equestrian rink, which includes 10 large horse stalls.

"The most important thing for me is just to create a comfortable space where the kids can roam around and the animals can roam around and we can feel this connection to nature," Gisele says. 

Inside the main house, there is almost 5,200 square feet (483sqm) to 'roam around'. This includes a first-floor primary suite with its own sitting area and private bathroom, an open-concept living room with fireplace and a floating-glass staircase, a gourmet kitchen with Italian quartz countertops and a built-in bar.

There is also an outdoor kitchen with a hibachi grill, pizza oven, BBQ pit and a wine fridge.

The main living space is cool and contemporary, with large sofas to recline on after a day at the stables. "Since I was a little kid, I've always loved horses," says Gisele. "Now I have the opportunity to share this passion with my daughter."

Gisele will spend time at the home with her daughter Vivian and son Benjamin, no doubt soaking up the peace and quiet that surrounds them.

The estate is near the Everglades, about halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Horses are almost as common as people thanks to the miles of parks and trails to ride, so Gisele will have plenty of fellow riders.

She may even bump into neighbours Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Chicago Bears star Devin Hester or Miami Heat player Udonis Johneal Haslem, all of whom own property in the area.
