While the homes of some of our most loved film characters are nothing more than purpose-built sets with carefully chosen props, others are all too real. The settings for some of the world's most iconic silver screen scenes, these genuine properties bring fiction magically to life.

Landing 36 years after the original, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit cinemas in September 2024 to critical acclaim.

The long-awaited sequel to the 1988 supernatural comedy Beetlejuice sees the return of Michael Keaton in the iconic starring role, alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as eccentric artist Delia Deetz, as three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. 

As you would expect, there are special effects and stunning sets galore, including the central ghostly Deetz residence, which has been shrouded in black in homage to Delia’s late husband Charles.

During the spooky season Airbnb invited guests into a specially created replica of the Deetz home movie set in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the surreal, haunting universe of the film.

For a limited period over Halloween only, reports British newspaper The Independent, selected guests were able to explore the Beetlejuice residence, with its disorientating chequered hallway and spaces filled with Delia’s spooky sculptures and paintings.

Guests were treated to a guided tour by Delia’s longtime assistant, while Delia herself gives an art class from beyond the grave.

A beloved childhood classic, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang tells the charming story of a down-on-his-luck inventor and single father, Caractacus Potts, whose creations never quite work out as planned.

However, when Caractacus finally invents a flying car, he takes his children and his soon-to-be romantic interest on a spectacular adventure to the fictional land of ‘Vulgaria.’

Based on a novel by Ian Flemming and adapted for the screen by Roald Dhal, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is packed with catchy songs, whimsical costumes and, of course, the antics of Van Dyke.

The iconic windmill, which served as the Potts’ family home in the 1968 film, hit the market in 2023 for the first time in 36 years with an asking price of £9 million ($11.5m).

The historic home is believed to have been built in 1816 and is located in Buckinghamshire, England, not far from London.

Seen here in images taken from ITV News, Cobstone Mill used to grind cereal until 1873. The property was later damaged by a fire and required substantial renovations before it was in a fit condition to be used as a film set for the classic movie.

After its role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the property was bought at auction in the early 1970s by film director Roy Boulting and his wife, actress Hayley Mills.

“It was love at first sight,” Mills wrote of the windmill in her 2021 memoir Forever Young, according to The New York Times, although she also described the property as “utterly impractical.” Mills never actually lived in the windmill, as the marriage ended before the renovations could be completed.

The ultimate millennial nostalgia flick, The Princess Diaries was an instant success, spawning an equally popular sequel, and, it has been announced, there's an eagerly-anticipated third film in the pipeline. The original 2001 hit movie starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews follows the life of Mia Thermopolis, an awkward American teenager, as she discovers she is the heir to the throne of a small European country and must juggle princess training alongside the everyday trials of being a teen.

Many of the film’s pivotal scenes take place in and around Mia’s high school – the fictionalised, preppy, San Francisco “Anthony P. Grove High”  – which is actually an impressive neo-classical, Mediterranean-style, single-family home. The building dates to 1923, and while its iconic façade and circular entry staircase are immediately recognisable from the film, its interior actually boasts four bedrooms and four bathrooms rather than lockers and computer labs.

The 4,554-square-foot home straddles two exclusive San Francisco neighbourhoods. It is one of five Italianate properties situated along the eastern edge of the Presidio, a former Army post-turned-national park, all designed by prominent local architect August Headman. The dreamy home was last on the market with Compass for £7.3 million ($8.9m). We hope whoever snapped it up has been able to shake the feeling of being back in high school!

The 1999 romcom Notting Hill immediately captured the hearts of viewers all over the world and flooded London’s northwest neighbourhood with tourists eagerly seeking the quaint Easter egg-coloured buildings, bustling street markets and, of course, the iconic Travel Bookshop.

In the film, the shop provides the perfect 'meet cute' for the charming but awkward bookseller William Thacker (Hugh Grant) and glamorous American film star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), who immediately strike up an unconventional but utterly adorable romance.

Fans of the film may be devastated to discover that the flat above The Travel Bookshop, a real storefront on the famous Portobello Road in Notting Hill, was last placed on the market with estate agents Russell Simpson for just shy of £2.4 million ($3m) in November 2022, but it unsurprisingly sold within a month.

The three-bed, two-bath maisonette boasts 1,414 square feet  (131 sqm) of space, copious amounts of natural light and an unbeatable location in the heart of one of London’s most scenic neighbourhoods.

The first floor of the flat features an open plan kitchen, dining, and living area, which offers original exposed brick, hardwood flooring, and a small fireplace.

You can still visit the iconic shop but you won't find a wide selection of books. These days, it sells mainly gifts related to the famous film. 

A cult classic, The Goonies is considered to be one of the best kids' movies of all time – and for good reason.

It was released back in 1985, but even today it remains the sort of adventure flick you can watch over and over again, which might have something to do with the fact two Hollywood greats, Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, were involved in its writing.

The story follows a group of kids, who, after finding a treasure map, set off on an extraordinary adventure.

The film opens right here, in the fictional home of Mikey Walsh and his older brother, Brand, played by a teenage Josh Brolin. Located in Astoria, Oregon, the property was built in 1896 and spans 2,336 square feet (217 sqm).

In the movie, the house is kitted out with plenty of amazing 80s design details, including frilly curtains and beige and brown furnishings. While it's undergone a slight makeover since then, it's still very much recognisable from this house tour undertaken by podcast Confused Breakfast. 

Inside, fans will remember the living room, which featured in multiple scenes. The room has huge windows and glossy hardwood floors.

There's also a large kitchen, a dining room, three bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which boasts gold walls and a matching gold bathtub.

The real treasure howevere, is the home's beautiful views of the Columbia River, the bridge and the city skyline. 

Fans will also know that the attic played a key role in the film. Accessed via a pull-down staircase, this is where Mikey and his friends discover the ancient treasure map, which sets them off on their adventure.

Today, the space is a cosy bedroom with skylights. In November 2022, the house landed on the market for almost $1.7 milion (£1.3m) and sold in just 20 days. According to British newspaper The Independent, it was snapped up by a fan, who has promised to preserve and protect this piece of movie history.

Since the film focuses significantly on Belfort ‘living large’, what better way to represent his grandiose lifestyle than with a splashy estate?

Set in affluent Mill Neck, this opulent 15,000-square-foot (1,400 sqm) Long Island mansion, is the backdrop to the story of real-life stockbroker Jordan Belfort. 

Situated on five acres (2 ha) of lush landscaping, just an hour outside of New York City, the home boasts just about every luxury feature you can imagine, including a wine cellar, brick pizza oven and a hot tub room. No wonder Scorcese jumped at the chance of filming here!

The three-storey estate boasts six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as numerous opulent spaces for entertaining, including a double-height family room with an enormous fireplace and French doors leading out onto the patio.

And while it is easy to imagine Margot and Leo living in luxury in these spaces, in reality, only the home’s exterior was used for the film.

The infamous pool party scenes were shot on the property’s expertly manicured grounds, which include the saltwater pool, multiple terraces and an ornamental pond with a waterfall. 

Despite its countless luxury features, the home was last listed for just under $10 million (£7.8m) in April 2023, perhaps a little less than one might expect from such a huge pile. The home had originally been placed on the market eight months previously, but failed to secure a buyer. 

Other high profile series to be filmed here include The Loudest Voice and Elementary. 

Disney’s recent reimagining of the classic 101 Dalmatians story, Cruella takes us back to the height of London’s fashion scene in the 1960s, and introduces us to a young, ambitious Cruella before her dog-hating days, played by Emma Stone. As Cruella faces off against her nemesis, the brutal fashion designer ‘the Baroness’, played by Emma Thompson, viewers are treated to quintessentially English backdrops which range from the iconic Liberty store to an elegant country estate and a cosy Bloomsbury flat, which has recently come to the market…

Originally designed by celebrated architect Thomas Cubitt in 1822, the flat sits above Wolburn Walk, London’s first purpose-built pedestrian shopping street, which is crammed with bow-fronted Dickensian buildings. With so much period charm, it’s no surprise that the street is a favourite with film directors and has featured in several recent flicks, including The Aeronauts, Pennyworth, Poirot, Christopher Robin and, most recently, Living. The ground floor houses the kitchen and dining area lit by a large picture window, as well as a TV room at the rear which offers access out to a private patio garden. Up one flight of stairs, the main living area boasts original windows, shutters and a fireplace.

Another cult classic that holds a special place in most millennial hearts, Mean Girls shaped the vocabulary and vernacular of an entire generation and remains in the zeitgeist today in the form of a successful Broadway musical.

With an all-star cast including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Tina Fey, the film transports us back to high school, where an elite clique known as ‘the Plastics’ makes all the rules, until one math-loving outsider decides to rock the boat.

The leader of the plastics is the ultimate queen bee, Regina George, a privileged pretty girl whose wealthy parents facilitate her every whim.

Of course, Regina had to have a spectacular house, and this whopping 18,000-square-foot  (1,672 sqm) Toronto mega-mansion just about fit the bill. Starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly and featuring swoon-worthy costumes designed by Edith Head, To Catch a Thief is considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time.

The 1955 Hitchcock classic follows John Robbie, a retired cat burglar, who finds himself entangled in a theft which he, for once, has not committed. The entire film is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Riviera and features a host of stunning homes, one of which was recently brought to market. 

Last listed with Sotheby’s International Realty for the princely sum of €3.6 million ( £3.2m / $3.9m), the stunning Villa Les Bolovens dates to 1935 and is situated in the hills of Saint-Jeannet on the Côte d’Azur, a 30-minute drive from the city of Nice. The home’s distinctive exterior of rugged stone and climbing purple flowers inspired Alfred Hitchcock when he was location scouting for his Oscar-winning film, and while the interior shots were all done in a studio in Hollywood, the home’s exterior features prominently throughout the film.

Arguably the film’s most iconic moment, the legendary kiss between Grant and Kelly, was shot on the villa’s balcony, with the glamour of the two stars rivalled only by the breathtaking views of the Riviera behind them. As far as Halloween movies go, Hocus Pocus is up there with the best of them.

The original hit our screens in 1993 and follows a comedic trio of witches, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, who are inadvertently brought back from the dead when teenager, Max Dennison, lights the Black Flame Candle on Halloween night.

Two decades after the first movie was released, Hocus Pocus 2 landed on Disney+ in 2022 and in celebration, the iconic Salem cottage was recreated...

Complete with cobwebs and smoky cauldrons, the “old creaky cottage stands tall amidst the trees”, the Airbnb listing stated.

Sadly, bookings were limited and only two adults got to stay here on 20 October 2022. We're sure they had the spookiest time of their lives...

Once inside, the guests were greeted by candlelight, broomsticks, and apothecary bottles.

Suggested pre-sleepover activities for the lucky guests included trying their hand at enchantments from the ancient spell book and exploring the “dark, rich history of Salem with visits to some of the town’s most haunted properties”.

While the listing may reference the Sanderson Sisters as hosts of the two bedroom cottage, the guests were actually greeted by a socially-distanced on-site concierge instead, given that it happened during the pandemic.

Designed down to a T,  the impressive fairytale cottage is definitely the stuff of movie fan dreams. We just wish the property was still available to rent...

Previous owner Isaac Robbins was said to have jumped at the chance to buy Barncastle in 2007, having visited a friend there as a child and marvelling at the sprawling blue house with arches and turrets.

Isaac and his wife, Lori, then spent the subsequent 15 years working to transform the home into a hotel, restaurant, and music venue, and said he hoped the new buyer would continue their work. 

Built in 1884 by Boston architect and Blue Hill native George Clough, the 9,000-square-foot (836 sqm) hotel is a mixture of old New England architecture and was the scene of the cocktail party in the scary movie. 

Barncastle's five rooms host some eccentric designs, including the foyer’s split staircase and a rather dramatic internal balcony. 

The unique inn is listed on the 1980 National Register of Historic Places and was purchased by sommelier Lizzie Szczepaniak and chef Owen Royce-Nagel, who moved there from Boston to start their new inn and restaurant in March 2023, reports local paper Mainebiz.

As a bed and breakfast in the 1980s meanwhile, it hosted Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley after their wedding. It was even used at one point as a marriage counselling retreat.

Quirky and life-affirming, Edward Scissorhands is one of the most memorable movies from the 90s.

The classic flick follows an artificial man with scissors for hands (played by Johnny Depp) whose discovery panics the locals in a small, suburban town.

Over time, however, the residents realise that despite his unusual appearance, Edward is actually a very sweet guy with lots to give, particularly his free haircuts! Far from being a set, the movie was actually shot on a cul-de-sac in Lutz, Florida.

The main property from the film, seen here in this video by the Duncan Duo Team, is home to Kim Boggs (Winona Ryder), the love interest of Edward, is actually real and can be found on the very street shown in the film.

The former owners, Joey Licalzi and his wife, transformed the unassuming bungalow into a superfan shrine. According People, Joey worked as a dishwasher on the film, and went to great lengths to mimic the on-screen house, even creating elaborate topiary shrubs, so it looks as if Edward had just given them a snip.

Step through the front door and you’ll find décor and memorabilia dedicated to the Tim Burton classic.

Spanning 1,432 square feet (133 sqm), the single-storey bungalow is overflowing with quirky artwork, topiary statues, cardboard cut-outs of Edward, and even oversized scissors. Sure, that's not weird at all...

In 2019, the Avengers assembled once more to restore balance to the universe in Avengers: Endgame.

When Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., decides to take a break from his superhero life he retreats to a secluded lakeside cabin with Pepper Potts and their daughter, Morgan.

However, after deciding it’s time to stop Thanos in his tracks, Iron Man rejoins his teammates to save Earth. 

Now fans of the Marvel movies have the chance to spend the night in a real-life Avengers: Endgame set, as it’s available to rent on Airbnb.

As the location of Tony Stark's retreat, the cosy cabin was also the scene for the important final scenes of the movie franchise.

The serene and compact cabin has a wraparound porch and is located in the city of Fairburn, Georgia, on a private 2,000-acre (809 ha) farm, which is perfect for a secluded break.

With three bedrooms, private lake access, and a spacious hallway, the rustic retreat doesn't come cheap at $800 (£626) per night and a three-night minimum stay. But it seems to be permanently booked out so it must  be popular!

A whole host of A-list stars filmed at the location, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Holland, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth.

Guests can even re-live one of the most emotional moments in the Marvel franchise by looking out over the picturesque private lake.

A coming-of-age story about growing up in the seventies in Pennsylvania, 1991's My Girl followed the adventures of tomboy and undertaker's daughter, Vada Sultenfuss, who is seen here with best friend Thomas J. Sennett, played by Macaulay Culkin.

Sultenfuss Funeral Parlor, where Vada lives with her widowed father, was set in a stunning Victorian-style home located in Bartow, Florida. 

Released in 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire remains one of the world's most beloved comedies.

Directed by Chris Columbus, the movie starred the late, great Robin Williams as a desperate dad who, having separated from his wife, pines for his children. In order to spend time with them, he creates an elaborate costume and applies to be their nanny.

Hilarious and endearing in equal measure, the movie played out in a beautiful 19th-century Victorian mansion in the heart of San Francisco...

The iconic abode was constructed in 1893 and acted as the main set for this classic family comedy. Positioned on a sloping plot in the heart of the city, the 3,300-square-foot residence last sold in 2016 for £3.4 million ($4.2m). It was in this house that Williams performed some of his most memorable scenes, including setting his prosthetic body suit on fire while attempting to cook a family dinner.

Christmas really isn't Christmas until you've watched Home Alone again for the thousandth time.

Released in December 1990, John Hughes is said to have written the fun-filled caper in 10 days. An instant success, it was number one in the box office for a staggering 12 weeks and is still one of the top 10 highest-grossing comedies of all time.

The film was renowned for its perfectly-timed one-liners, as well as for the magical abode in which most of the scenes unfold...

Almost as iconic as Kevin McCallister’s (Macaulay Culkin) bathroom scream scene, the Home Alone house has long been an obsession for movie buffs. It was here that Kevin rigged his booby traps in order to defend his home against burglar duo The Wet Bandits.

The gigantic colonial-style mansion can be found in the sought-after Chicago suburb of Winnetka and is every bit as grand in real life as it is in the movie, only now the plaid décor has been given a modern facelift.

Built in 1921, the property spans 4,250 square feet (395 sqm) and offers four bedrooms and three bathrooms. As one of the most memorable rooms in the whole house, the hallway played host to a number of key scenes, including Kevin's stair sledging session and our first meeting with burglar, Harry (Joe Pesci).

In 1977, John Travolta wowed audiences with his incredible dance moves and elaborate costumes. Saturday Night Fever followed Tony, a young Italian-American who tries to escape his difficult family life by hitting the dance floor.

In the movie, which featured a classic soundtrack by the Bee Gees, Tony lived in an attractive home in Brooklyn, New York, and that very same house went up for sale in 2020, selling for £1.5 million ($1.8m)...

Located in Bay Ridge, the 1920s home has just as much style and glamour as the movie itself.

For many, Harry Potter is one of the greatest sagas of all time. With eight blockbuster movies, the Wizarding World has so far raked in £8.6 billion ($6.8b), according to Forbes.

Thanks to a multimillion-dollar budget, each film offered spectacular film sets that brought the story magically to life, and while the Weasley family's tumbledown home was very much smoke and mirrors, some of the franchise's locations were actually real...

Potterheads will remember this iconic home from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, the penultimate movie in the much-loved franchise.

In the film, this historic pad was used as the location for Harry's childhood home. In fact, film makers used the real-life medieval town of Lavenham, Suffolk, to create the wizarding town of Godric’s Hollow, the place where Harry was born and where his parents were killed at the hands of evil Lord Voldemort.

The historic timber-framed house dates back to the 14th century and it is now one of the most photographed houses in England, thanks to its wizarding connection. It also happens to be one of the most historically significant medieval properties in Britain.

Known locally as De Vere House, it once belonged to the aristocratic De Vere family, who lived here between the 14th and 17th centuries. Though light-filled and chic, it appears almost untouched since their day.

In the film, the property appeared hauntingly derelict, but in reality, the De Vere House is chic and cosy with spacious rooms and plenty of eye-catching period details.

Grade I-listed, the home has six bedrooms, three reception rooms, and four bathrooms, while carved timber ceilings, wonky stone fireplaces, lead mullion windows, and a medieval staircase add to its magic.

In 2018, the period property sold for £950,000 ($1.1m) and is now a luxury bed and breakfast and can be booked via Airbnb.

In 1986, the American comedy-drama The Money Pit hit movie theatres around the world.

The film stared Tom Hanks and Shelley Long as a young couple who pile their life-savings into a fixer-upper. As we all know, home renovations are not always as straight forward as we might hope, as this couple soon discovers when their dream home crumbles around them.

Filmed on location in New York, the real-life Money Pit property is anything but dilapidated...

Known as Northway, the regal residence can be found in the village of Lattingtown, along the Gold Coast of Long Island, USA.
