It's safe to say that 2020 was a strange and unprecedented year but with a new year comes a sense of positivity, and a fresh batch of envy-inducing celebrity homes. This month, peek inside Kate Winslet's Manhattan penthouse, Zac Efron's sophisticated Los Feliz crib and Margot Robbie's stunning mid-century bungalow.

Since his acting debut in High School Musical some 15 years ago, Zac Efron has come a long way and that's certainly shown in his choice of real estate. Sophisticated, grown-up and cool, the actor’s long-time home can be found in the foothills of Los Feliz, high above Hollywood and the glistening lights of central Los Angeles. Efron has owned the property for almost a decade, but this month is waving goodbye to the place for $5.9 million (£4.4m).

The Greatest Showman star reportedly paid $4 million (£2.9m) for the house back in 2013, so is set to make a decent return if it goes for the asking price. Spanning 5,644 square feet, the hideaway has been described by The Agency as a “stylish zen contemporary compound”, and we can definitely see why. The epitome of a high-end bachelor pad, it's kitted out with skateboards, arcade games, pool tables and even a Japanese water feature.

The property sits at the end of a long gated driveway and every single room faces the city. On clear days, you can even see the ocean. With five bedrooms, five bathrooms and plenty of airy, light-filled living areas across its two floors, the pad was made for entertaining. Efron's bedroom is a quiet oasis with stunning vistas, a sitting area and an ensuite with faux snakeskin walls.

Recently married Hollywood superstar, Scarlett Johansson is looking to offload her long-term penthouse apartment in the heart of New York City. The Avengers actor bought the cool crib back in 2008 for a reported $2.1 million (£1.5m) and is now asking $2.3 million (£1.7m) – a small but significant profit. The chic apartment can be found inside a charming post-war building on Manhattan's sought-after Upper East Side.

The Marvel film franchise made Johansson one of Hollywood’s top-earning actresses of the last two years, taking home an estimated $56 million (£41.5m) in 2019, so she may well be looking to invest in a new property. Potential buyers shouldn't be hard to find for this gem of an apartment – dating back to 1958, the home spans 1,270 square feet and offers two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Light, bright and unique, the space offers elegant hardwood floors and ample windows.

Since she purchased it 12 years ago, the Marriage Story-star has invested in extensive renovations, restoring the home to its former glory. Completely cleared of personal belongings, the listing photos show the condo virtually staged, highlighting how beautiful it could be with the right furnishings. The compact kitchen comes with honed marble counters, while the master suite boasts a walk-in closet and a 65-square-foot solarium patio.

Elsewhere, there's also a 425-square-foot rooftop terrace with sweeping city views – perfect for lazy Sunday brunches or early morning yoga sessions. For sale with Noble Black, this cool and contemporary apartment could be yours. If you don't quite have the budget, the penthouse is also reportedly available as a rental, but you'll need $6,500 (£4.8k) a month in order to sign the lease. Listed with Douglas Elliman for $5.7 million (£4.3m), Kate Winslet's dreamy Manhattan penthouse is almost too good to be true. Positioned in West Chelsea, just moments from the Meatpacking District, the property enjoys an enviable location in one of New York City's most sought-after neighbourhoods, making it the perfect retreat for an Oscar-winning actor.

The Titanic star, who has a reported net worth of $65 million (£49m), bought the 1930s penthouse for $5 million (£3.7m) in 2004 with her now ex-husband, director Sam Mendes. Winslet has since married Sir Richard Branson's nephew, Edward Abel Smith, and has moved back to England on a permanent basis, which is potentially why she is selling off this magnificent property.

Light-filled and spacious, the 3,018-square-foot pre-war condo has four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms and a lounge, kitchen and dining area encompassed within a beautiful great room. Known for her roles in some of America's most popular TV shows, Busy Philipps has been in the public eye since 1998, when she landed the role of Audrey in Dawson's Creek. Now, Philipps has sold off her long-time home, located in the historic Whitley Heights neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The sale took place in an off-market deal valued at $3.95 million (£2.9m). As vibrant and fun as the woman herself, Philipps' home is brimming with personality. The Cougar Town actor is said to have purchased the 1920s Mediterranean Revival residence in 2008 for $2.1 million (£1.6m). Nestled on an ultra-private quarter-acre parcel, the historic home offers 4,600 square feet of interior space, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. 

The house is decked out with bespoke furnishings, beautiful décor and high-end fixtures, including bold wallpapers, statement ceilings and eye-catching floor coverings. At 30-feet-long, the living room has a coved ceiling, an antique tile fireplace and floor-to-ceiling arched windows, while the adjoining sunroom opens to a wraparound terrace. The master bedroom is a stunning oasis with gilded accents, a modern four-poster bed and a marble-lined bathroom. We think we might be in love...

Elsewhere, you'll find a dining room with jungle-patterned wallpaper, a spacious kitchen with black lacquer cabinets, an octagonal breakfast room that opens to the garden, a swimming pool surrounded by tropical plants and a self-contained guest apartment with its own entrance. Philipps and her husband, filmmaker Marc Silverstein, are said to be residing in New York, where they look set to stay. If this house is anything to go by, we can't wait to see what she buys next.

Having spent nine years playing for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers, Tristan Thompson is set to move to the Boston Celtics in November and so has put his Ohio mansion on the market. Listed for $3.3 million (£2.4m), Thompson bought the lavish property back in 2015 for $1.9 million (£1.4m). 

Located in the exclusive gated community of Lakehurst Drive in the village of Bratenahl, the 6,200-square-foot mansion boasts five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The spacious living quarters are open-plan with a kitchen, stylish dining space and living area. Surrounded by lavish floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with light, the stunning views over the lake complete the setup. 

The master suite is fitted out to sports star standards and is even located in its very own wing for the ultimate in privacy.  There's a small living area, walk-in wardrobes, huge picture windows and a private balcony for soaking up more of the surrounding scenery, plus an ensuite bathroom with a large bath, two sinks and a steam shower. 

NFL quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen have sold their Tribeca apartment for a reported $37 million (£27m) as they prepare to move to Miami full-time. The star couple has owned the 12th-floor apartment, which is located in the swanky 70 Vestry building, since 2018 when they snapped it up for just over $25 million (£18.4m). 

The five-bedroom, five-and-a-half bathroom home, which was built in 2016, is spread over 4,600 square feet. These artists impressions give a close approximation of what the quarters look like in their extremely private home. The glamourous eat-in kitchen is surrounded by windows and leads through to the corner living room with open river views.

Further into the penthouse is the master suite with two walk-in wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom. As well as their own luxury private apartment, Tom and Giselle would have had access to a whole host of the top-end building's amenities, which include a billiards room, lounge suite, cafe, and health and wellness amenities. 

There is a huge private terrace space that's nearly 2,000 square feet, set up for cooking with a grill and sink, and almost 360-degree views of the cityscape. Set to move to Miami, the couple have recently purchased a waterfront property which they plan to tear down and build a new one house its place. However, the couple hasn't fully said goodbye to the Big Apple as they still own a second apartment in 70 Vestry. 

In May 2020, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk announced in a tweet that he was "selling almost all of his physical possessions" following the birth of his first child. The entrepreneur had soon listed all seven of his properties, including a house bundle for $62.5 million (£45.8m), that included four homes in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles. They have now been reportedly sold for just shy of $62 million (£45.5m) to a local developer. 

As far as celebrity real estate goes, Margot Robbie's mid-century bungalow is a bit of a bargain. The Australian actor, best known for her roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and as Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, bought it in 2017 for a reported $950,000 (£711k). Now this cute little house is on the market with Coldwell Banker for just under $1.2 million (£899k).

As one of the world's highest-paid actresses of the last two years, Robbie has used her $26 million (£19m) fortune to invest in her fair share of properties including this bright and cheery little bungalow. Dating back to 1951, the charming house can be found in LA’s historic Hollywood Heights district and is brimming with plenty of period appeal. 

Covering just 945 square feet, the compact crib features two bedrooms and one bathroom. Since Robbie purchased the home it has undergone extensive renovations. As well as repainting inside and out, the star refinished its hardwood floors and revamped the kitchen with cotton-white Shaker cabinets and top-of-the-range stainless steel appliances.

The master bedroom is a chic space with access to a charming tiered garden. The uppermost terrace offers cross-canyon views, while the lower patio is the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffees. The house also boasts a light-filled living room with elegant built-ins, a breakfast nook, an office and a laundry room.
