The Castle at Smith Lake, Cullman County, Alabama

Should you head to the town of Bremen in Alabama, you'll find a waterside home that's almost too bonkers to be true. Sitting on the edge of scenic Lewis Smith Lake, this modern castle was built in the 1980s and comes with 18 acres (7.3ha) of land.
Yet its idyllic setting and abundance of space are somewhat overshadowed by its head-turning exterior...
The Castle at Smith Lake, Cullman County, Alabama

Known as The Castle at Smith Lake, the property was constructed from masonry and steel, with giant boulders making up sections of its walls.
One side is made of glass, providing incredible views, while other elements, like endless windows, asymmetric walls, unusual towers and sloping roofs, only add to the home's quirky finish.

Inside, the property spans 4,974 square feet (462sqm), spread over four peculiar floors, with sloping walls, asymmetrical ceilings, custom tile work and obscure built-ins that make it truly one-of-a-kind. This bathroom, for one, boasts a snail-like tub that was clearly custom-made to perfectly suit the look of the house.
For sale in January 2025 for £3.2 million ($3.9m), via ARC Realty Mountain Brook, the property was designed for someone with real personality. Love it or hate it, this property is undeniably unique.
Flintstone House, San Mateo County, California

This incredible home has to be one of the most bizarre in the world, not just America! With its bold colour palette and undulating, blob-like towers – not to mention the kooky cartoon characters and dinosaurs decorating the lawn – the structure has become legendary in the town of Hillsborough, California.
The bubble home was built in a rather unique way back in 1976. Its distinctive shape was designed by William Nicholson and created by spraying a concrete mix, called shotcrete, onto steel mesh that was wrapped around a series of large balloons.
Flintstone House, San Mateo County, California

Originally finished in an off-white shade, the exterior was painted orange in 2017, with a purple dome added later, after current owner Florence Fang purchased the pad.
Sadly, in 2019, a legal battle began between the town of Hillsborough and Fang. Lawyers representing the locals argued that the Bedrock-influenced house was an eyesore. We don't think the giant dinosaurs in the garden helped much!
Flintstone House, San Mateo County, California

Inside, the home is just as unusual with soaring ceilings, hand-crafted windows, bespoke furnishings, neutral whitewashed walls and Jerusalem stone floor tiles.
The home's kitchen resembles a spaceship, with a futuristic glass island, intricate metal doors and circular shelving carved into the walls, while the lounge boasts a sunken, circular couch and a soaring ceiling.
Smith Mansion, Park County, Wyoming

When taking in the Smith Mansion for the first time, you'd be forgiven for not quite being sure what you are looking at.
Nestled on a scenic plot just outside of Yellowstone National Park, in the Wapiti Valley of Wyoming, the unusual log structure looks like someone has simply balanced wooden planks on top of one another, and gives the impression that it could be blown over by even a gentle gust of wind.
Smith Mansion, Park County, Wyoming

The quirky residence was created in 1971, by amateur architect Francis Lee Smith. Smith was apparently inspired to build the home in the wake of a fire on Rattlesnake Mountain.
After the blaze, plenty of timber was up for grabs for anyone with the ability to take it home. Smith had a truck, so he began loading it with wood until he had enough to build a comfortable family retreat. However, fuelled by inspiration, the architect didn’t want to stop. Steadily, the structure grew until it was a 75-foot (22.8m) tall twisting tower.

Inside, there’s said to be a dining room with a tree stump for a table and smaller stumps for chairs. There are also several viewing platforms and seasonal spaces, including "the hot room" and "the cold room" – one designed for winter and the other for summer.
Sadly, Smith’s obsession with the project led to the end of his marriage, according to The New York Times. This drove him to focus even more on the monstrous building. Sadly, in 1992, he fell to his death from one of the home’s roofs while working on it. Today, the structure is considered a local landmark.
Pocono Pyramid, Wayne County, Pennsylvania

Imposing and entirely individual, Pocono Pyramid lies in Hamlin, Pennsylvania, on a leafy woodland plot.
Savvy HGTV fans might recognise it from Ugliest House In America, in which comedian Retta travelled across the States to tour properties nominated by their owners as the most unappealing in the country. Said owner, Mike, now rents the pad out on Airbnb and is definitely leaning into the 'ugly' nametag with pride.
Pocono Pyramid, Wayne County, Pennsylvania

No matter what your opinion of the place is, there's no denying it's different! With its four sloping exterior walls, black finish, symmetrical windows and seemingly endless balconies, it has the look of a spacecraft.
The interior of the pyramid home is accessed thanks to a wooden staircase that leads from the ground to the elevated front door.

Although the exterior is a bit bonkers, the interior is surprisingly modern and stylish. It has spacious, light-filled rooms with soaring ceilings – this one, in the living room, extends 60 feet (18.3m) to the peak of the roof.
Thanks to a recent renovation, the five-bedroom house blends mid-century modern design elements with the latest additions, including a 12-seater movie theatre and an arcade kitted out with retro games.
Artist's retreat, San Diego County, California

Sometimes, it's hard to adequately describe a property and this one certainly falls into that category. The retreat can be found in Alpine, in San Diego County, and was designed by famous American artist James Hubbell.

Described by the owner as “unique and marvellous”, the distinctive home has all the charm of The Shire, with organic forms and handmade elements.
Made from a mixture of wood, bricks, glass, ceramic tiles, bronze and iron, there are no rectangles at all, just curves, arches, vaults and alcoves.

Rustic hobbit house, Bennington County, Vermont

Not too dissimilar to the Flintstone House, this rustic property looks like it has grown from the ground on which it sits.
Akin to a large mushroom, the quirky residence is situated in Sandgate, Vermont, and is certainly characterful.

The white stone cottage has an organic form, with handmade dome-like walls and ceilings. The exterior benefits from large openings, a bespoke chimney, rotund roofs and a bright blue front door.
According to the Airbnb listing, Boston Magazine described the home as a "combination between the postcard-perfect cliffside suites of Santorini (Greece) and a hobbit house".

Inside the "whimsical stone abode", there’s around 900 square feet (84sqm) of space and every single room is cave-like, with undulating walls and ceilings.
There’s a living and dining area, kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom. Cosy and quaint, the interior would be ideal for a pixie or other fairytale character.
Cube-like chalet, Crawford County, Pennsylvania

When you think of the word 'chalet' you might conjure up images of a rustic log cabin in the Alps or a luxe mansion overlooking the ski slopes of Aspen. Well, not all chalets are made equal.
This cube-like chalet in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, was purpose-built as a holiday home but features a rather unusual exterior aesthetic.

From the front, the chalet appears more inviting, with a few windows, a sloped walkway leading to the front door and a sloping steel roof. Yet the rear is box-like and angular, appearing to have burst through the soil and sprouted.

Inside, the property is warm and cosy. Laid out over two floors, there's an open-plan living area, a kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. Upstairs you'll find a snug loft bedroom, tucked under the eaves.
Dr Seuss House, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska

If you're ever driving down this road in Talkeetna, Alaska, you'll be able to spot the tip of one of the strangest homes in the world.
From a distance, it looks like the peak of a water tower or an electricity pylon, but get closer and the home's true scale and design come into focus...
Dr Seuss House, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska

The towering, cartoonish-looking house wouldn't look out of place in Whoville, which is why it has been given the nickname Dr Seuss House.
Soaring up 185 feet (56.4m), the property wasn’t built in homage to any of the books' wacky illustrations. In fact, it was built by an Alaskan attorney.
Dr Seuss House, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska

Phillip Weidner decided to build his own home by stacking several log cabins on top of one another. The result is a soaring, fairytale-esque structure that teeters up to the equivalent of 18 storeys.
Weidner is said to have continued to add layers to the home when he still couldn’t get a clear view through the trees, which is how the house reached such impressive heights. Weidner passed away almost two decades ago and the house remains unfinished to this day. Want to take a closer look? Watch this YouTube video by photographer, Florian Kriechbaumer.
Luna Parc, Sussex County, New Jersey

This quirky and colourful property was designed by American multimedia artist, Ricky Boscarino.
Luna Parc is set within the 8.5-acre (3.4ha) wooded landscape of Sandyston in New Jersey and was inspired by the Hundertwasser House in Vienna, Austria, as well as Gaudi’s Park Güell in Barcelona, Spain.

The house is filled, inside and out, with Ricky's curious, multi-media art projects. Crafted by hand from found objects, such as glass bottles, sticks, corks, stones and bottle tops, there's something amazing to see everywhere you look.
The gardens surrounding the home are filled with bright, colourful sculptures, wall art and unusual handmade spires. You'll also spot intricate mosaic murals, glass elements and painted metal.

Crash-landed spacecraft, Clark County, Washington

With the appearance of a spacecraft that’s just crash-landed on Earth, this whacky residence is a sci-fi fan's dream come true.
Though it might look out of this world, the futuristic pad is actually an Airbnb that can be found in Brush Prairie, Washington.
Crash-landed spacecraft, Clark County, Washington

The UFO-inspired pad spans just 726 square feet (67sqm) and was completed in the 1960s. It's surrounded by five acres (2ha) of land in the rural Hockinson Hills, allowing residents to enjoy idyllic views from the comfort of the spaceship-like retreat.
While the front of the exterior could be plucked straight from any sci-fi flick, the rear features a block-like concrete base, where a hidden garage can be found.

The structure comes complete with a kitchen and a large, open-plan living area – known as the Lunar Lounge. There are also two futons and two queen airbeds, making the property perfect for four guests.
As for its decorative elements, this Airbnb is brimming with cool and quirky movie memorabilia and alien artefacts. From Star Wars statues to magazines about the 1969 moon landing, space buffs will be able to immerse themselves in intergalactic materials.
The Bruno Steel House, Lubbock County, Texas

Part sculpture, part home, this iconic building is nestled in the heart of Ransom Canyon, Texas, and was designed and built by sculptor and architect, Robert Bruno.
The artist spent a staggering 33 years building the residence, but sadly it wasn't finished in his lifetime. While the front of the home looks like a rust-coloured boulder, the rear and sides are truly mind-bending...
The Bruno Steel House, Lubbock County, Texas

The gravity-defying pod sits on four legs and has been compared to an elephant, a pig, the hull of a spaceship and even a James Bond villain's lair.
Bruno began building the home in 1974 and spent more than three decades crafting it, moving in during the final years of his life, so that he could finally experience living there. Sadly, he passed away in 2008.
The Bruno Steel House, Lubbock County, Texas

It’s estimated that 115 tons of salvaged steel was used to make the building. After Bruno's death, his daughter sold the pad to property developers, who finally finished the residence and began renting it out on Airbnb.
Inside, the house is still bonkers, but also beautiful. With support beams that help to form organic-shaped walls and ceilings, custom windows and wrought iron work, it's certainly one of a kind.
