If there's one trend that's on the rise this year, it's microcement. This extremely versatile and hard-wearing material is fast becoming the design aesthetic of choice, giving us all the Mediterranean feels. Choose from matt, glossy, textured or highly polished finishes in a range of pigmented colours to suit any scheme. Completely waterproof, easy to clean and adaptive to any surface, it can be used on floors, ceilings, walls, and even as furniture and sanitary ware. You can entirely model your bathroom with this wonderous product. Just imagine sinking into your beautiful microcement bath, dreaming of days in Santorini. Bliss!

Bathrooms have typically been the most neutral space in our homes, but 2024 is a time to be bold. You'll see plenty of pattern and colour cropping up on the trend pages this year. Even if your bathroom is on the more humble size, you can still go to town and tiling is a fabulous way to make that coveted statement. If you're hesitant, choose a more classic colour as a base that you can layer up with accessories and other items in bolder hues. Cool blues work well as a foundation, as seen here. And get a load of that basin – amazing!

2024 will witness a bold move from plain basins to statement pieces, including freestanding designs that bring colour, pattern or structure into wash spaces. "Now, more and more people are interested in adding some personality to their bathrooms or cloakrooms," says Anna Callis, founder and designer of London Basin Co. "Thus, decorative elements have become a trend, and the introduction of statement basins is a simple but effective way of creating a focal point while adding a touch of drama."

Bathrooms needn't be limited to paint and tiles – you can actually use wallpaper to great effect. "Introducing patterned design into a bathroom can be a quick win to add a lot of personality in what usually can be a small space," says James Greenwood, brand interiors expert at Graham & Brown. "Wallpaper effortlessly adds colour into bathrooms that can be clinically white. And, organic designs such as our Design of the Year 2024 New Eden, shown here, bring relaxing elements, perfect for creating a calm oasis at home."

First, we saw black taps topping the trends, then came brushed brass and warm metallics. Now, coloured taps are having their moment, like these from Roca – and for 2024, you're going to see taps and shower fittings in a rainbow of colours, from white to pink and blue to green. What a cool way to bring a touch of excitement to a plain white suite. 

The cost of living crisis and climate change are very real considerations that we all have to navigate, with water waste among the growing concerns. For 2024, GROHE is launching a new water-recycling shower that can help. Now this feels like luxury! A gorgeously rich, chocolatey colour scheme that just oozes grandeur. You're going to see 1970s décor with its punchy, brown tones cropping up for 2024. But for bathrooms, it's going to be on a higher level and all about curating a cocooning, cosy space for bathing and unwinding. Just look at that gorgeous truffle-coloured marble basin – delish!

Homes that beam with happiness from wall to wall are going to fill us with joy in 2024. Homeowners will choose bright and beautiful bathroom schemes to hit the dopamine decorating spot. Patterned wallpaper in uplifting tones is both eye-catching and fun. Pair with vibrant lighting fixtures and, of course, brightly coloured cabinetry for a look that just wows.

Reeded glass has been getting more popular than ever over the last couple of years, with texture high on the style list. But this year you're going to see the trend emulated on furniture and walls, bringing a lovely organic and soft feel to spaces. Say goodbye to those harsh, high gloss cabinets that we are all too familiar with in bathrooms, and in kitchens, too. 

If you do anything at all for 2024, it's make a statement. And nothing says statement more than a mock croc leather freestanding bath. This stunning double-ended acrylic bath screams luxury and style and epitomises the move to create mood, texture and opulence in the bathroom. If you've got the room, it's the perfect addition to your wash space, or even your bedroom. Baths in bedrooms is a classic combo that will never go out of style. 

Some would call it a classic and others might say it's a has-been, but either way, slim subway tiles aren't going anywhere fast. But for 2024, you're going to see them in a different light. Tile stacking is the pattern configuration topping the trends list this year. Forget brick formation, herringbone, double block or basket weave, stacking is where it's at. Simple and stylish, you can create the look with any subway tile, though the skinnier and longer the better. Go for a coloured grout, too, for that bold feel.

Sensory schemes and feeling 'at one' with the space you're in is key for 2024, and enhancing that sensation of well-being and calm. Our lives are hectic, so this year it's about consciously slowing down and taking those precious moments to unwind. Wabi-sabi – the Japanese aesthetic is set to be prevalent for interiors in 2024. Andy Oakman, head of Clearwater Interiors and lead design consultant, explains: "Wabi-sabi is a muted luxe look that is described as appreciating beauty that is 'imperfect, impermanent and incomplete' in nature. A simplistic approach to design and architecture that embraces the unique qualities found in natural materials, giving a tactile and organic touch to interiors."

Did marble ever go out of fashion? Apparently not, according to Wayne Spriggs, CEO, designer and founder at Lusso. “Marble as a material embodies opulence, and is durable and timeless, which is why it’s found in some of the world’s most lavish hotels and resorts,” he says. “We believe that marble is a fantastic choice for a bathroom. Whether you’re looking to achieve a classical, extravagant or affluent look, there’s a wide variety of options available to suit the theme you’re looking for.” Crisp and clean, the stone creates a minimalist look while still making a statement that will stay on-trend for a lifetime.

Gone are the days of pulling a single suspended string to operate your one ceiling bulb. Lighting deserves just as much attention in the bathroom as it does in other rooms and there are three main types that you should consider – ambient, task and accent. Ambient lighting is the general illumination you need for the entire space, for when you're doing those everyday ablutions. Task lighting is more focused and brighter, best for shaving or looking closely in the mirror. And then there's accent lighting that works in a decorative way to set mood. For 2024, we'll see a rise in smart lighting that you can control with a wave of your hand, set to certain times and connect to your devices. 

What a gorgeous shade the bods at Pantone have declared as Colour of the Year for 2024 – Peach Fuzz is sure to lift the mood of anyone. A velvety peach tone that exudes warmth and cosiness. "We chose a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone Colour Institute. "It's a shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless." And it looks utterly brilliant in a bathroom.

With increasingly hectic lives and convenience a priority, we’re opting for showers over baths and are giving them the budget and consideration they deserve. Hence the rise of wet rooms and walk-in showers, with smaller cubicles giving way to larger enclosures with statement tiles or mosaics. For 2024, we'll see the trend for wet zoning flooding our socials – areas of the bathroom partitioned off as a dedicated shower space, often alongside a bath and concealed behind a glass screen – more than likely needed.

Give way to ordinary and welcome colour into your space – you can thank us later! This is going to make you feel good. You may be able to give your existing vanity a quick spruce up with a coat of glossy paint, but if not, you're going to see plenty of bright units hitting the bathroom shops early in 2024.

Beginning its story more than 500 years ago in Venice, terrazzo is still making a comeback with its signature flecks affording a sense of retro style to contemporary bathrooms. You can use them with spectacular effects to create a spa-like space, and they look especially fabulous when paired with statement brushed brass fixtures and fittings. New for 2024, we'll see chunky terrazzo hitting the spotlight with larger chips embedded into the tile.

#StyleItDark has been trending on social for several years, and while elsewhere in the home things are getting lighter and brighter, the bathroom is finally embracing the dark side. From deep blues to lush emeralds and bold black, we’re creating cocooning and comforting environments for relaxation, best offset against gleaming metallics and mood lighting. The beauty of this trend is that sometimes it'll take no more than a couple of tins of paint to achieve the look, and it works well with a simple white bathroom suite.

2024 will continue to see bathrooms where plants are plentiful, green is the go-to colour and natural materials are the thing. Lauren Lear, associate designer at interiors firm A.LONDON, says: “With the emergence of biophilic design, the use of lots of natural elements and plants is also on the rise, both of which help to reduce anxiety and stress after a tricky few years.” In short, it’s all about bringing the outdoors in – rain showers, botanical prints, you name it!

As wood panelling has taken over every other wall in the house, bathrooms are next on the list. Waterproof slat walls make a clean and contemporary alternative to bathroom tiles. Keep these modern slat wall panels looking their best by simply wiping them down with normal soap and water.

Oversized tiles can make even the smallest of bathrooms seem bigger, so it’s hardly surprising that large-format is having a moment. Improvements in manufacturing and advancements in printing mean that concerns around breakages and quality of scaling-up are a thing of the past. "We’ve seen a huge rise in the popularity for large-format tiles being installed in bathrooms regardless of the room’s size,” says Colin Lincoln-Evans, buyer at Tile Mountain. “Not only do these tiles create real impact, but due to the fewer number of grout lines necessary for their installation, they create an air of space and a seamless aesthetic, especially when the same tiles are used on both the walls and floors.”

Frameless shower screens work well in bathrooms with strong features such as stand-alone baths or feature wall tiles. However, a new generation of shower screens is taking centre stage in minimalist bathrooms – the more glorious, the better. This visually enchanting shower screen by Matki has been created with metallic mesh glass, which gives off glints of light.

As we look for ideas to make our homes cosier, textiles will be warming up bathrooms in 2024 with curtains and rugs being brought into schemes. Possibly a trend to be avoided with very humid spaces or those with children that splash about, alternatively add an indoor/outdoor rug that can withstand a drenching.

Incorporating earthy tones and elements into your design will give your bathroom a sense of nature. Warm neutrals are continuing to dominate over yesterday's grey and all-white schemes to create a more inviting and sustainable bathroom sanctuary. Luckily, many eco-conscious designers also produce beautiful and fashion-forward furniture and fabrics, so going green in the home has never been so appealing.

While putting a sofa in your bathroom may seem absurd, suitable seating such as this scroll-armed bench creates a luxurious statement. Plus, as bathrooms as pamper rooms at home are becoming increasingly popular, timeless upholstery offers an ideal addition to perch and paint toenails or wait for that face mask to work its magic. 

2024 is set to move the boundaries. Baths have been popping up in bedrooms for a while, but now dressing areas are creeping into bathrooms. If you are planning a bathroom renovation, why not position a practical vanity between the bedroom and ensuite for a streamlined flow between rooms?

Reeded or fluted glass is going to be a huge attention-to-detail trend in 2024 in bathrooms. Not only does it sit perfectly with Art Deco, heritage and brushed brass trends, but the contouring and texture of the glass create a layer of privacy that is also rather chic.

From kitchens to bathrooms, green rooms always come out on top in online searches and in 2024 that's set to continue. Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux, says: “Nature is a great soother in times of stress, and it’s also precious and worth protecting. Hence a shift away from the simple elegance of white towards earthy shades like green." While we’ve certainly moved on from the avocado bathroom suites of yesteryear, the fact we’re gunning for green is proof that fashion does come full circle, albeit with a modern update for a new audience.

Did someone say ‘spa day’? Enjoy five-star amenities from the comfort of your home with everything from hot tubs, saunas and power showers providing all the facilities of a spa in your own space. Claire Duncan, owner and designer at Surrey-based Inspirational Interiors, says: “If we’ve learnt anything over the last few years, it’s that we all need to spend more time on self-care. By creating an oasis of calm in the bathroom, together with the amenities to match, we can all create a spa-like experience to escape to from time to time.” Fluffy dressing gowns and face masks are entirely optional.
