From William Van Alen's Chrysler building to Le Corbusier, Art Deco design took the world by storm in the 1920s and 30s, and architecture was no different. These sought-after properties have all the elegance of Gatsby's Golden era but are also blessed with the bright and airy light-filled decor we love in contemporary homes. Set on 1.25 acres of land, this Art Deco manor was built around 1929. In 1988, it was bought by a real estate developer and his wife, who spent 16 years slowly renovating the 20-room home.

Built in 1935, this detached home in Essex, UK was constructed as one of 35 houses for a project that was intended to showcase the best in British modern design. Although the house has been renovated, many of the original period features remain, including the white rendered exterior, the parquet flooring and large, curved windows.  

Inside, the hallway branches off to the kitchen and the living room on the other side. The small but functional kitchen has some original features including a porthole door, which leads through to the living room, and cuter storage with a built-in cupboard and open shelving. 

The living room is spacious and bright with curved windows that let the light flood in. With a floral carpet and rattan chairs, it's a real throwback to the 1930s. Upstairs, the first floor has three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom is bright and airy with sea views and access to a private balcony. 

The dining room features an original Art Deco fireplace in nude marble and more of those fabulous curved windows. Outside, the back garden is filled with lilac trees and there's a pond and a small side section with a mature grapevine.

This authentic Art Deco home in the city of Antwerp, Belgium was originally built in 1924. Renovated between 2004 and 2010, it's still full of period features inside and out. The exterior still has the original double wooden front door, Critall windows and decorative stonework with distinctive motifs. 

Inside, the staircase, doors and parquet flooring have been restored to their original condition. The spacious Art Deco kitchen features wooden units with plenty of storage and has enough room for an eight-seater dining table. With modern-day living in mind, the property has also been adapted with double glazing, a new roof and solar panels. 

The townhouse is spread over three floors, with a second dining space in the basement. The room features checkerboard flooring and low ceilings with double doors that lead onto the next room. 

With nearly 2,900 square feet of living space, there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms in total. Set on the first floor, the bedrooms have been modernised and also feature low ceilings, hardwood floors with views out onto the streets of Antwerp.

Located in suburban Amsterdam, this impressive modern villa is the epitome of Art Deco style. The monochrome exterior is clad in a mix of zinc and white stucco, with a decorative arch at the back. The house comes on a spacious plot with room for eight cars and also includes an electric charging point. 

Inside, the impressive entrance has double-height ceilings and cool blockwork windows. Leading through to the spacious living room, there's an open fireplace and French doors that lead outside to the large terrace. Influenced by the Art Deco period, it captures the glamour and elegance of 1930s Hollywood within an English rural setting. The exterior design features parapets, curved walls and a unique central wing motif above the front door. 

Although decorated in an Art Deco style, the interior has also been tailored for 21st-century living. The ground floor is in an open-plan layout with the kitchen and living space at the centre. The kitchen has both state-of-the-art appliances and gorgeous Art Deco-style curved units in polished wood, alongside two glass block partitions. 

The formal dining room features dark wooden flooring, Art Deco wallpaper and bi-fold doors that lead outside to the nearly one-acre garden. The rest of the house also features a number of Art Deco design features, including the doors, staircase and curved walls. Built to be environmentally friendly, this gorgeous home has a rain harvesting water system and solar panels.

This 1930s homes in the Longwood Highlands neighbourhood in Los Angeles is a mixture of Spanish and Art Deco architecture. Full of charm and character, the home has just over 4,000 square feet of living space. 

Built in 1931, the house has been modernised but still has plenty of Art Deco interior design features. The formal living room features exposed beams, hardwood floors and built-in shelving. The doorways and window frames are shaped in an Art Deco style with mouldings and curved shapes. 

Located on Hayling Island in the UK, this Grade II-listed house was built in 1934. With panoramic views of the picturesque Langstone Harbour from every level, its the perfect Art Deco retreat. With its black-framed Crittal windows and white rendered facade, it stands out from the natural landscape surrounding it.
