Our favourite feature has to be that magnificent porch, though – it's the perfect spot to sip on some sweet iced tea and watch the world go by. This antebellum home isn't in need of too much work, just a gentle touch to bring it into the 21st century. First things first? We'd have to rip up those carpets...

If a move to Alaska is on the cards, check out this historic roadhouse in Manley. Said to be one of the oldest of its kind in the state, this roadhouse was built in 1903, with additions made in 1990. Today it boasts 16 bedrooms along with a bar, restaurant and three cabins on five-and-a-half acres in the heart of Manley. With a bit of vision, this roadhouse could be a historic beauty. You’ve got to keep that wood siding with green trim though!

One of the most historic homes in southern Arizona, this neoclassical revival was built in 1915 by Wirt Bowman, one of the owners of the Mexican Resort where the famous racehorse Sea Biscuit was discovered. Inside the six-bedroom sprawling abode you'll find plenty of alluring details, from the hardwood floors and oak trim to the two-story wraparound porches. Unfortunately, the house is stuck in a 90s time warp – could you fix it up and bring it sympathetically into 2020?

Built in 1878 by Daniel G. Fones, a veteran of the American Civil War, The Fones House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The brick building is notably topped with a steeply pitched gable roof, complete with iron cresting and flanked with a series of deliciously decorative windows. It's currently set up as two apartments and an office, but we think this property would make the most magnificent family home.

They say our homes are our castles, but what if your home actually was a castle? Well, head to Del Sur in California and you could snap up this real-life stone castle! Built in 1924, it's sat on 506 acres boasting ancient petroglyphs, a natural spring and views of the Antelope Valley. The building itself has eight bedrooms along with maids’ quarters and a 2,500-square-foot-stable. While it needs some work, it could be incredible. What would you do? We'd set up a vineyard with boutique B&B.

If it's city and mountain views you're after, look no further than this Victorian home in Central City. Built in 1900, the structure is in good shape but would benefit from a bit of vision and hard graft. It has plenty of quaint charm to make it worth your while though, from the antique wood-burning stove to that cheerful front porch. There's also the option to snap up extra lots that add up to 40,000 square feet of land, should you have bigger, bolder plans for this sweet little house.

Built in 1844 for John Ireland Howe, the inventor of the common pin, this Greek Revival pile in Derby could make a magnificent home for the right person. Inside the granite house you'll find 10-foot ceilings and large, spacious rooms, including five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The scope of work required to bring this up to scratch means it's not one for the faint-hearted, but it’ll be a corker once completed. 

Located within the Felton Historic District, this 1870 Italianate build is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and once belonged to the town's original train master. Inside the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home you'll find oodles of old-fashioned charm, from decorative hardwood flooring to stained-glass windows and more. The new owner will be just the fifth since it was first built, and while it's in need of a lot of love, it'll be breathtaking when finished.

Sat on Orange City's Oak Street, this area used to be known as Millionaire's Row. And once this historic 1912 home has been restored to its former glory, it’ll look a million dollars for sure. While it needs significant attention, the four-bedroom property boasts original baseboards, wainscoting and doors, along with an original staircase and newel posts, making it a design geek’s dream project. Looking for an architecturally significant restoration project? This late-Victorian house is a design of George Franklin Barber, an architect based in Tennessee, who published house designs via mail-order catalogues. This one, which dates back to 1900, is based on Design No. 7 of his Modern Dwellings and Their Proper Construction book. While the design is as charming as ever, the house has suffered from years of neglect and will require an enthusiast to bring it up to standard.

Looking for a more chilled-out way of life? Head to Honolulu! And what better base than this 1940s build, sat next to the Forest Reserve in the highly desirable Nuuanu-Dowsett neighbourhood. The property enjoys glorious views over Nuuanu Valley and Alewa Heights, along with ocean glimpses. There's also a separate 'in-law' living unit, making this property an attractive proposition. It just needs a bit of TLC to bring it back to its former grandeur. 

Today a six-bedroom house, this property has an interesting history as the old Iona Stagecoach Inn. Built in 1890, the family home still has some of the original finishes intact. If your budget is as big as your vision, check out this stunning French Eclectic-style mansion in the city of Evanston, Cook County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was designed by architect Richard Powers in 1927. The three-story limestone mansion sprawls out over some 18,500 square feet, encompassing seven bedrooms, a glass conservatory and a ballroom. Unsurprisingly, it's packed to the rafters with gorgeous period features, from its grand curved staircase to ornate wooden panelling.

Named after Thomas H. Branaman, a state senator who lived here in the mid-1900s, this 1868 Federal-style house needs a keen restoration-minded new owner to help it sparkle once again. Inside the two-bedroom house you'll find plenty of original features, including the staircase, fireplace and woodwork. Despite years of neglect, the hilltop house is structurally sound and just in need of new systems and plenty of cosmetic work.

Looking for a sweet-as-pie home to call your own in Scott County? Check out this cute three-bedroom home that dates back to 1900. Inside this historic house you'll find charming features, such as a wood-burner, as well as a head start on upgrades including newer plumbing and electrical work. It just needs someone with a bit of vision to finish it off and make it a home. Plus, the listing includes another vacant lot with the sale, which could sweeten the deal for keen gardeners or developers. 

A smart classic revival home in Lawrence, the first thing you'll notice about it is its rather imposing entrance columns and thick limestone walls. Dating back to 1913, this is a robust house that was built to last. While the interior could do with a bit of TLC, this historic house has been well cared for over the years and the work required is mainly cosmetic. Inside, you'll find four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and no less than three kitchens. 

Fancy snapping up a slice of local history? The Pickett House was built in Finchville in 1882 by local farmer James A. Pickett and inside this four-bedroom, two-bathroom house, there is plenty of space for a growing family. The separate dining and living rooms are sprawling, while bay windows add an extra sense of space. You'll find plenty of original hardware, such as door hinges and locks, still intact, too.

If you like getting a lot of bang for your buck, check out this cute Victorian three-bedroom home. The property, built in the 1870s, sits on a large fenced lot with mature oaks, magnolia and fruit trees, plus a second two-bedroom property. While the main home needs updating, it boasts glorious historic detailing throughout, like the solid-milled tiger-oak crown moulding and original kitchen. Scouring the market for a restoration opportunity in historic Brookeville? What about one of Montgomery County's most significant historic farms? Holland-Claggett Farm comes with this charming 1770s farmhouse, set on 11.5 acres and including a tenant house and a caretaker’s ranch house – plus pastoral views, rolling fields and mature woods. The house is in dire need of restoration, but it would make a gorgeous family home once completed.

A classic Colonial revival home, Pomeroy House was built in the 1920s and comes with two acres of land. Built in 1902, this charming Colonial Revival is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is jam-packed with desirable features, like 11-foot-high ceilings and six fireplaces. The leaded glass detailing on the entrance will surely enamour you, as will the gold coffered ceilings in the grand room. The wraparound porch will be the place to be during summer but, before that, you've got plenty of time to get the renovations finished inside.

Built in 1890, this sweet abode has bags of Victorian charm. Inside you'll find an original wood staircase, moulding and flooring, along with decorative details like ornate fireplaces and built-in bookcases. While the property is in good order throughout, it would benefit from a preservation-minded buyer to make the most of its original detailing and make more era-appropriate decorative choices. Outside, there's a big yard and two-car garage complete with workshop.

Nestled in the heart of the quaint town of Forsyth, Montana, you'll find this charming 1901 four-bedroom, airy house. Inside is decked out with original features aplenty, including gorgeous woodwork and a fireplace crafted out of local river rock. Inside, it's packed full of period details like crown moulding and hardwood floors – and, if you happen to be a fan of the 70s, you’ll love the kitchen! Built in the 1880s, this red brick Victorian cottage is the perfect project for a DIY enthusiast who knows their limits. The current owners have updated the electrical and plumbing works and the interior just needs some cosmetic work to bring it back to life. If you're in the mood for a meaty project, look no further than this 1810 federal build in Alloway. Once known as The Alloway Tavern, today the property is a four-bedroom home complete with a separate basement apartment. While it's not short on period features (we love the hand-hewn fireplace mantles), the exterior needs a lot of work and vision to bring it back from the brink. While the interior is habitable, it needs some love, too – but my oh my, what a house you'd end up with!

Tucked away on a corner plot in the historical district of Las Vegas, this five-bedroom Victorian home boasts a very enviable location. Inside there's hardwood floors, lavish fireplaces and an attic and basement ripe for conversion. We also love the extensive wood panelling and stained-glass windows. Although it's not one for the meek – it requires a new roof and a major facelift – with the right owners, this 1908 house could easily become one of the smartest homes on the block.

If a 10-bedroom mansion excites, rather than overwhelms, check out this stunning red-brick Victorian build in Auburn. It was built for local banker James S. Seymour in 1861 and, inside the three-story pile, you'll find lashings of original details like marble fireplaces, hard-crafted curved staircases and built-in cabinetry. Keen? Get your offer in before 18th December – and make it a good one as the buyer with the best plans for the property wins!

Head into the woods and snap up the 1905 Upchurch-Williams House, listed on the State Study List for the National Register of Historic Places. The Queen Ann-style property isn't short on Victorian details, from its nine fireplaces and restored wraparound front porch to the charming double-gable roof. Inside, the original configuration remains intact, including four bedrooms. Sat on 5.5 acres of wooded land, this is a great buy for a preservation-minded buyer with a penchant for the great outdoors.

For Dutch Colonial good looks and craftsman quality, check out this 1928 house in Valley City. With its icing-white wood siding, picture-perfect shutters and beautifully curved roof, it looks like a gingerbread house! Inside, you'll find more of the same style with brick fireplaces, exposed beams and solid oak doors. This three-bedroom home would benefit from someone with a bit of vision to drag it, lovingly and with respect, into 2020.

A stately pile in Norwalk, this four-bedroom home dates back to 1836 and still has plenty of historic details from that period. There are a few issues to contend with, including damp, but once it's been restored this grand house will shine once more and you'll never stop admiring the refinished hardwood floors and original fireplaces. Outside, there's an acre of land, porches and garage and, while the bathroom needs updating, we'd beg you to consider keeping that wallpaper and tile combo! 

This gorgeous 1901 build features a blend of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles to dazzling effect – no wonder it's on the National Register of Historic Places. With six bedrooms and four full bathrooms, along with a parlour, library, study, formal dining and commercial kitchen, this abode would make a huge family home or B&B. While it would benefit from some modern updates and cosmetic changes, it's in good condition overall. A mini project that's low on effort and big on reward.

Love the farmhouse chic look? Bag this 1920 craftsman beauty in Milwaukie, Oregon. The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home features hardwood flooring and original crown moulding, along with modern updates like a master walk-in closet. There's still plenty to do here – the property would benefit from a more era-appropriate interior design and the basement needs refinishing. Plus, it's sat on almost a quarter of an acre, making it a great choice for keen gardeners or have-a-go horticulturists. 

Built in 1907 by a wealthy oil mogul, this elegant Victorian house would make a terrific three-bedroom family home. Plenty of original windows mean the house feels airy and light, plus they're great for spotting the local birds, rabbits and even deer. There are plenty of historic details, too, such as stained-glass windows and an exposed oak staircase, but keep in mind there is a significant amount of work required here. The dining room needs a new ceiling and the floors throughout need refinishing.

If you're after a slice of Victorian history, look no further than this gorgeous 1889 Queen Anne in Woonsocket. The Joseph Bouvier house is another Barber catalogue house – number 41 to be precise. Sat on 1.3 acres with the original carriage house, this fixer-upper has bags of potential. Inside, one of the highlights has to be the exquisite original fireplace and mantel, while the generous porch steals the show outside. Could you be the one to bring this house back to life?

If it's a showstopper you're after, give up the search! This magnificent five-bedroom home was built in 1875 and the Italianate influence is clear throughout. Original shutters hang on the windows and the grand staircase and entryway is still intact. Likewise, the windows, doors and floors are all original, too. As it stands, the house would benefit from a fresh lick of paint, plaster repairs, kitchen and bathroom remodels and new plumbing and electrical work.

Built by Wallace L. Dow, considered the most covetable architect of South Dakota in the late 19th Century, this Queen Anne represents an enviable slice of local history. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is just crying out to be become a family home, from the huge eat-in kitchen to the formal dining room with butler pantry. You'll find preserved woodwork, including pocket doors and curved windows throughout – it just needs a bit of vision (and a rethink on the 90s kitchen and bathroom remodels).

Built in 1890, the historic Robin's Roost was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 (it also belonged to two governors, the Taylor brothers). Today, the eight-bedroom, five-bathroom home would make a fabulous boutique B&B or multi-generational family home. It’s sat on three acres of land, which you can appreciate from the wraparound porches and inside you'll find lashings of well-preserved historic details, including glass chandeliers and ornate fireplaces.

Snap up a slice of Cass County history with this charming three-bedroom Victorian home. Built in 1878, Mathews Powell House is now registered on the National Register of Historic Places and was once a successful B&B before becoming a cosy family home. Today you'll find original chandeliers, hardwood flooring and custom cabinetry throughout. Outside, admire the stately old pecan trees from the stunning back deck. So, what do you reckon – is this restoration project in Texas the one for you?

Sat on Salina's Main Street, this fixer-upper is in need of some serious attention. It has plenty of potential, though, thanks to the separate rentable living quarters, adjacent vacant lot and fully landscaped grounds with mature trees. With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, this property could make a wonderful family home for someone with enough vision. You'll need to replace the dodgy modern panelling and tatty carpets – and who knows what lies beneath? There's only one way to find out...

Built in 1878, this four-bedroom home in Newbury is overflowing with original character. We particularly love the 10-foot-high ceilings, wooden floors, pocket doors and huge windows that flood the interior with light. The attached shed and barn, along with the unfinished attic, mean there is plenty of scope for development, too. This gem is a rarity for the area – built by Thomas Keyes, Solomon House is one of the few remaining buildings in the village built between 1860 and the fire of 1913.

Looking for a major project? With parts of this build gutted back to the studs, this could the one! Built in 1877, this Italianate duplex in Danville, Virginia, started off life as a smaller, single family home. Over the years it's been tweaked and it currently stands as two five-room and one six-room apartments. Draft architectural plans suggest it could be converted into two townhouse-type units, although we think it would make a fabulous family home if fully restored to its former glory.

Built on the turn of the century, this home, designed by architect Kirtland Cutter, has bags of potential. With five spacious bedrooms and four bathrooms, it's crying out to be restored into an era-appropriate family home. Inside there are plenty of intact architectural details, plus separate guest quarters, making it an option for multi-generational living. Sat on a corner lot with room for a garage and located near the historic Garland district, this would make someone a wonderful home.

We can't get enough of this imposing Italianate in Wheeling, West Virginia. Built in 1858, the six-bedroom property is recorded on the National Register of Historic Places. It's comprised of a two-story, square main block, with an offset two-story rear wing. And, while it's in fairly good condition for its age, it's in desperate need of someone with bags of passion and vision to come along and whip it into shape.

Another George F. Barber design, we simply adore this 1900 Queen Anne that manages to look both cute as a button and architecturally interesting at once. Inside the five-bedroom property, you'll find roomy living space with hardwood floors, original woodwork and stained-glass window detailing throughout. We think you'll agree that the lakefront position is an added bonus and it would make a fabulous property to restore, removing any age-inappropriate updates, and return it to its former glory. 

Built in 1890, it's safe to say we're head over heels in love with this frothy pink Victorian home in Cheyenne. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom property is packed full of original features, including hardwood floors and original moulding. Once it's sympathetically restored, it would make the cutest family home. Our only stipulation? You have to keep it pink!
