Independent carpenter Tom Coupe has not only built himself a beautiful tiny home, but he's also set a precedent for the future of housing across Australia. This colourful off-grid property meets passive house standards and is entirely fire-resistant. Recently featured on the Living Big in a Tiny House blog, Tom's impressive home is as beautiful as it is practical.

Tom's cosy tiny home is located in the town of Kinglake, Victoria. Wanting to create a design that could stand up to the region's devastating bushfires, Tom set up TC Tiny, a carpentry firm that helps others to create their own disaster-proof properties. His 16-foot passive house was his guinea pig, enabling him to hone the design to perfection.

The cleverly constructed cabin is made from dense timber, fire-resistant paint and metal, while the structure is light enough to be mobile, meaning Tom can move the vehicle out of harm's way if the circumstances allow. Through his innovative design, Tom also ensured that as few areas in the home as possible were susceptible to catching fire.

To maximise its snug size, Tom installed clever storage solutions to make use of every inch of available space. Entirely solar-powered, the home features an off-grid hot water system that heats up water on the stove before feeding it into the shower. The windows were also designed to prevent the interior from overheating in the summer and feature flame-proof shutters for further protection.

Amazingly, this incredible little dwelling was built for less than £13,000 (AU$25k) – an impressive price considering its energy performance and high-quality finish. Tom hopes his clever design will help others in high-risk areas to create fireproof dwellings that are sustainable and long-lasting. Innovative and attractive, this petite pad is pretty inspiring!

If you're looking for an inspiring story to fuel your own journey into low-waste living, then look no further than Michael Mobbs. Michael lives with his family in the Chippendale neighbourhood of Sydney, but what makes his home different to all the others in this vast urban city is that his functions entirely off-grid...

From the outside, the property, pictured centre, looks like any other 19th-century terrace house in the city, but unlike its neighbouring properties, Michael's costs just £155 (AUD$300) a year to run – and that's for four people! The self-proclaimed Off-Grid Guy started disconnecting his home from the grid in 1996 when he decided to clean up his act and reduce his impact on the environment.

Michael's passion is to show families that it's possible to live an ordinary life and use everyday appliances while functioning off-grid. He installed a sewage recycling system for around £5,700 (AUD$11,000), as well as a rainwater system for a similar amount, which collects a staggering 84,000 litres of water a year. There's also a battery system that stores solar energy to keep the property powered.

Inside, the four-bedroom terrace house is light and bright, with a modern open-plan living area and all the regular appliances and furnishings you'd expect to see in a city home. Michael's mantra is that anyone can create an off-grid home like his if they put their mind to it and have the right systems in place to deal with is electricity, water and waste – something that's perfectly doable in a conventional property.

Dedicated to helping others reduce their carbon footprints, Michael now hosts regular talks, as well as educational tours of his inspiring home. So far, over 20,000 people have visited his property to learn about Michael's story and process. A model of the terrace house can also be found on display at the EcoLogic exhibition in Sydney's Powerhouse Museum.

It's hard to believe that this stylish property was once three empty shipping containers. Located in the rural idyll of Wattle Bank, Victoria, the house belongs to Anglo-Australian couple Amy and Richard. Wanting to create an affordable and efficient home, the couple turned to sustainable architects Modhouse to help design their eco-friendly dwelling.

The house is formed from three 20-foot steel containers that have been cleverly fixed together with two linking corridors. Surprisingly spacious, the property is full of clever storage solutions, while ultra-thin walls allow the couple to maximise every inch of inside space.

Recently featured on Living Big in a Tiny House, the spacious dwelling is stylish and simple, with natural timber covering the ceiling, walls and floor. A clean colour palette and contemporary decor finish the interior design, while ample windows allow light to flood into every room.

However, the couple's bedroom is perhaps the home's smartest design feature. By elevating the bed off the ground, Richard and Amy have given themselves ample storage space in the tall base, as well as creating clever built-in shelving behind the headboard of the bed.

Offering shade during the height of the summer, the house features a floating roof that helps keep the interior cool. The roof is also home to numerous solar panels, which generate the majority of the structure's energy. If all this wasn't enough, the couple also collect their own rainwater, storing the supply in two large tanks so it can be used whenever it's needed.

True eco-warriors, Paul and Annett decided to build their own off-grid home, providing them with the financial freedom to live life on their own terms. Located on a picturesque plot in Byron Bay, New South Wales, the DIY property is powered entirely by renewable energy. Before the home was even built, the couple's first step was to set up their solar panels and battery bank, so even their tools could be powered in an environmentally friendly way!

Amazingly, the couple took on all of the building work themselves, despite having no previous experience. Tackling everything from the construction of their doors and windows to the final lick of paint, Paul and Annett are pioneers of self-sufficient living. While the roof's solar panels provide the home’s electricity during the day, their battery pack generates power when the sun goes down.

Inside, the property is crisp and characterful, with a classic white colour palette and natural timber accents. Comfortable and highly functional, the tiny home's layout is extremely space-efficient and designed around the couple's lifestyle. Pops of foliage and large picture windows bring the outside in, opening up the snug floorplan.

The open-plan ground floor is home to a practical kitchen, bathroom, cosy lounge and even an office for self-employed Paul. The property's staircase also conceals secret storage drawers and leads up to the couple's sleeping loft that can comfortably accommodate a double bed.

The smartest eco-friendly home we've seen yet, the pair installed a biodigester, which turns household food and garden waste into usable biogas to power the kitchen stove and oven. The pair also collect rainwater from the roof to sustain them during Australia’s drought season, making everything from the shower to the kitchen sink eco-friendly!

Glade and his partner, Cloe, built their own sustainable home almost entirely from rubbish. Collecting recycled materials from their own back yard, the waste-free pair also rescued windows from an old shed and sourced the home's front door from a landfill site nearby. The couple's off-grid house is found on a pretty 12-acre plot on the outskirts of Melbourne. The exterior of the property was created from cedar plywood cladding, which the pair collected from a house around three kilometres away at a cost of just £18 (AU$35).

Inside, the home is charming and rustic, with exposed timber cladding and two striking staircases that Glade made from steel. These lead up to two identical bedroom lofts, one for the couple and another for their two children.

The real heart of the home, the kitchen offers plenty of storage and ample countertop space for cooking and preparation. The space even features an electric oven and a dishwasher, powered by solar panels. Recently featured on the Living Big in a Tiny House blog, the property cost the pair just £5,157 (AU$10k), since they carried out most of the work themselves.

Eager to spread the word about off-grid living, Glade has now set up his own tiny house construction company to help others build their dream eco-homes. In fact, the pair's home can be found next door to Glade's workshop, with their substantial solar panel system powering both the property and the commercial space.

When their grown-up children flew the nest, Jan and Kev thought it was high time to up sticks and adopt a rather different way of living. After careful thought, the couple decided to design and build their very own sustainable money-saving tiny house, freeing up cash and allowing them to see more of the world.

In order to save money and learn new skills, Jan and Kev opted to build the property themselves, despite having zero construction experience. Learning as they went along, they rented space on their friend's plot of land on Queensland's Gold Coast to build their sustainable property. Surrounded by a picturesque forest, the eco-retreat has the most idyllic back garden you could wish for.

The couple's house might be small, but it offers bags of space and personality. The interior is warm and bright, with ample windows and bi-folding doors that lead out to an external deck – doubling the pair's living space. Standing at just over 300 square feet, the home runs completely off-grid and is powered by sunlight, with a solar battery storage system generating back-up power on overcast days.

The interior provides plenty of space for modern living, with a large communal lounge area, a well-equipped kitchen and a cosy sleeping loft with ample room for storage, furnishings and a queen-sized bed. As well as changing their home and their lifestyle, the pair completely overhauled their working lives too, setting up their own smoothie business in a converted retro caravan.

The home's bathroom is perhaps the most impressive space in this tiny home. Spacious and contemporary, the wash space doesn't scrimp on luxuries, with a walk-in shower and double sinks. A water tank collects rainwater to reuse throughout the home, so those creature comforts won't cost the earth either.

Found in Forest Grove, Western Australia, Birchfield Farm is just a short drive from the popular town of Margaret River. The estate covers 24 hectares of land and is entirely powered by the sun. Owner Andy Lindford bought the former dairy farm back in 1995 and gradually set about transforming it into an eco wonderland, designing and hand-building two inspiring properties that are entirely off-grid...

Andy's pride and joy is The Dome, a unique, rotund house made by packing a timber frame with straw, before rendering the shell with mud and clay from the surrounding earth. A self-sustainable retreat, the innovative property is cool during the summer months and warm throughout winter thanks to the insulation power of the building materials.

Running completely off-grid, the straw bale house features an array of solar panels on its roof that generate electricity and hot water. After nightfall, there's also a wood-burner to keep the interior nice and toasty. Andy also harvests rainwater, which is collected, cleaned with a UV filter and pumped back into the house for reuse. Andy also believes in low-waste living and recycles all food waste by feeding his pigs!

Andy's vision was to create a unique house with a seamless domed interior and smooth circular walls – the result of his hard work is a free-flowing, open-plan interior with plenty of space for the whole family. Complete with a fully equipped kitchen, six-seater dining table and large corner sofa, the accommodation is generously proportioned.

Sleeping up to eight people, the large property encompasses a master bedroom with a queen-sized bed and an ensuite, a twin room and a bunk room that's perfect for younger guests. Andy has now opened Birchfield Farmstay up to visitors, so everyone can enjoy a slice of off-grid living down under.

Known as Earthship Ironbank, this unique and beautiful property can be found close to the golf courses, wineries and walking trails of the Adelaide Hills. Couple Martin and Zoe were inspired by the works of eco architect Michael Reynolds and traveled all the way to New Mexico to learn more about his approach. With the knowledge he gained, Martin then returned home and with the help of a small team, built this self-sufficient, off-grid house.

Radical in its approach but elegant in design, this sustainable property was created using natural and recycled materials for the ultimate eco retreat. Built using everything from car tyres to trash and earth, the property produces its own water and electricity, while the couple grow their own food in a clever indoor garden.

Covering just 750 square feet, the home maintains a stable temperature all year round thanks to the insulating properties of the packed earth walls. The couple also treat and recycle their greywater, which is then used for laundry and watering the garden, making their waste output extremely low. As Australia’s first-ever Earthship, Martin and Zoe faced plenty of planning hurdles during the construction process, but support from local volunteers helped the couple bring the home to life.

Perfectly symmetrical with unusual curved walls, the Earthship is a celebration of organic resources. Every inch of the building showcases the beautiful natural materials used in its construction, from the recycled glass decorating the walls, to the raw mud finish of the ceiling and floor. Who knew off-grid architecture could be so pretty?

The open-plan home encompasses a queen-size bed, a kitchenette and a cosy lounge area. There's also a private bathroom and an pretty outdoor terrace that's ideal for stargazing. After creating this shining example of sustainable design, Martin now works as a consultant, educating people on the benefits of natural building.
