Sometimes celebrities just want to lay low and escape the limelight, so it's no wonder that many opt to buy lavish rural estates away from urban settings and sprying eyes. From Tom Cruise's secluded ranch in Colorado to Patrick Swayze's equestrian estate outside Los Angeles, we’re handing over the keys to the sprawling ranches and farms of some of the world's most famous faces.

Best known for his roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, Patrick Swayze began his career as a dancer before finding success on Broadway and then Hollywood. He partnered with Keanu Reeves in surf movie Point Break in 1991, the same year he was named 'The Sexiest Man Alive' by People Magazine.

He was married to his teenage sweetheart Lisa Niemi and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008, passing away aged just 57 in September 2009.

Married in 1975, the couple gave up on having children following a miscarriage in 1990, and instead invested their time and energy into their stunning equestrian ranch, Rancho Bizarro, in the San Fernando Valley on the northern edges of Los Angeles. Niemi remained on the 4.5-acre estate after Swayze’s death, but it was eventually put up for sale for $4.5 million (£3.6m) in September of 2023, according to Mansion Global.

The single-storey house features a living room with a beamed cathedral ceiling, a fireplace, an antler chandelier, hardwood floors, French doors and wood-panelled walls. The most recent owner is not a person, but an LLC tied to philanthropist and oil heiress Aileen Getty, which purchased the ranch from Niemi in 2015 for $2.9 million (£2.3m).

Getty recently 'swapped' homes with Brad Pitt, purchasing his Los Feliz estate for $33m (£26m), while the actor snapped up the heiress’ smaller mid-century modern home for $5.5 million (£4.4m).

According to the listing, the ranch features a 1940s California ranch-style house with 3,516 square feet of interior space, three bedrooms, four bathrooms and one partial bathroom. The main bedroom features a cosy fireplace, double doors that open on to a patio and a bathroom with tiled steps up to a soaking tub.

There’s a farmhouse sink and large windows in the kitchen, which opens on to a glass atrium with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. 

The actor passed away surrounded by family and friends at the ranch on 14 September 2009 after a 20-month-long illness. Working almost up until the end, the Swayze cherished his life on the ranch, with its extensive meadows and free-form pool, where he and Niemi, who were married for over three decades, shared a passion for horseback riding and flying. “He lived life to the fullest,” co-star Keanu Reeves said in an interview with The Daily Mail.

Domestic goddess and America’s sweetheart, Martha Stewart has had an illustrious career in all things house and garden since the 1980s. It stands to reason, then, that her own home is an impressive 153-acre farmstead that she’s beautifully maintained since purchasing it in 2000 for $15.2 million (£12m).

Dating back to 1700s, the historic and sprawling Cantitoe Corners estate in Katonah, New York boasts a wealth of lush gardens, greenhouses and horse stables across the grounds.

This imposing building may look like the main house, but is actually Martha’s so-called 'Summer House' and, according to Martha’s Instagram post, is "used primarily as my library for my book collection". Originally built in 1776, Martha "rebuilt it completely on the old foundation in 2001".

According to House Digest, the three-storey, 12-bedroom main residence is referred to as 'Winter House' by Martha and her staff, complete with an impressive chef-style kitchen (of course), porch room, gym, as well as a dining room and specified areas for gathering.

Outside, an expansive dining table stretches out awaiting Martha’s guests for an alfresco lunch we assume was particularly delicious from the hostess with the mostest. Guests could enjoy admiring the grounds, full with daffodil fields, a sprawling vegetable garden, peony garden with reportedly 200 different plant varieties and plentiful wildlife.

According to the New York Times, Martha enlisted the help of renowned architect Allan Greenber to create a new kind of farm, with horses, cutting gardens and henhouses. Alongside grazing paddocks for her five Fresian horses seen here, the 153-acre farm also houses multiple cats and dogs, chinchillas, canaries, and parakeets as well as donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, quail, peacocks, and homing pigeons, with birdhouses for birds, owls, and bats.

Martha’s menagerie has even been a Certified Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation since 2007.

Controversial rapper and producer, Kanye West is no stranger to a media circus so it's no surprise he likes to retreat from the public glare when the going gets tough. After a very public divorce from infamous influencer, Kim Kardashian, he sought solace in the wide open spaces surrounding his remote ranch in Wyoming.

The rapper, who fell from grace following bouts of hate speech and PR stunts in recent years, bought so-called Monster Lake Ranch in 2019 with ex-wife Kim. 

Reportedly purchased for around $8 million (£6.3m), the 3,888-acre compound was listed for $11 million (£8.7m) in October 2021, before being removed from the market in August 2022 after Kim and then boyfriend Pete Davidson broke up, as reported by the New York Post.

Renamed West Lake Ranch and referred to as Yeezy Campus, the rural getaway boasts not one but two freshwater trophy lakes and fabulous vistas of the nearby Rocky Mountains.

Kanye reportedly installed a recording studio above the so-called ‘eating cabin’, enlisting the visionary eye of renowned Belgian architect Axel Vervoordt to help design his compound project. Vervoordt was previously brought in to help create Kanye and Kim’s Hidden Hills home in California, in all its minimalist church-like glory.

Famous mother and daughter duo, Debbie Reynolds of Singin’ in the Rain fame and Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher once lived in a huge estate named Freedom Farms located near the town of Creston, California.

SFGATE reports that the property was purchased by Debbie’s son, Todd Fisher in the 1980s for his mother as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood life, the talented actress soon became joint owner over the years.

Having been on and off the market since 2014, the working family ranch last sold for just shy of $2.9 million (£2.3m) in December of 2022. Described as a rustic retreat, the 44-acre farm hosts horse ranches, rolling fields and vineyards as well as a small refurbished general store, selling local cheeses and wines. Talk about the good life!

Steven Seagal, the famed actor, screenwriter and talented martial artist has a prolific career and property portfolio you wouldn’t want to mess with. The Michigan-born silver screen star, who initially worked as a martial arts instructor in Japan, is one of many celebrities to own a whole ranch to themselves. Let’s take a look around Seagal’s spread and find out its worth.

The actress and her husband, Ally McBeal producer David E. Kelley reportedly bought the property in 2004 for $12 million (£9.5m) and after 15 blissful years, sold it in December 2019 for a cool $22 million (£17.4m). She might wish she'd held on to it however, as it more recently sold for a staggering $33.5 million (£26.5m). 

The dreamy equestrian property can be found in an exclusive enclave in one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s wealthiest communities. In fact, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is also said to have a house in the neighbourhood. The pad sits on almost nine acres of land and comes equipped with everything a VIP could need. 

The Mediterranean-style main house was built in the 1940s and features more than 6,000 square feet of space, four bedrooms and an open-plan great room with cosy sitting areas and roaring fireplaces. And that's not all. The remote celebrity home offers three detached staff apartments, each with its own bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. There's also a guesthouse with an office, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness centre where the Scarface star no doubt spent a lot of time over the years.

The home's spectacular grounds also boast a gated pool and spa, a tennis court, a cedar hot tub and an alfresco dining patio where romantic evening meals can be savoured. Plus the property comes complete with an apple orchard, three vegetable gardens, natural meadows, a fenced paddock and a historic octagonal barn with 10 horse stalls.

We can certainly see why Pfeiffer and Kelley purchased the pad, but we can't imagine why they would want to let it go...

Several years after her husband, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Jackie Kennedy purchased a stunning farm in Martha’s Vineyard, New England. The former first lady bought the 340-acre estate in 1979 for a reported $1 million (£791k) and built the main house and guesthouse in 1981. 

In June 2019, the rural retreat was placed on the market by Jackie's daughter, Caroline Kennedy, with a whopping $65 million (£51.5m) price tag. With more than a mile of private Atlantic Ocean beachfront, two freshwater ponds, a vegetable garden and an idyllic blueberry patch, Red Gate Farm is certainly one for lovers of the great outdoors.

The five-bedroom Cape Cod-style house was designed by architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen and the interior is truly stunning. Spanning 6,456 square feet, it offers chic living spaces with a subtle nautical theme and a colour palette of cream, terracotta and blue.

The pad also offers five bathrooms, a kitchen and two offices, as well as plenty of lounge areas with views of the sea beyond. To top it off, there's even an outdoor deck where we're sure Jackie O spent many an evening watching the sun set.

Of course, the home's grounds are truly exceptional. There's a swimming pool, a tennis court, a fairytale treehouse where Jackie's grandchildren used to play, a bocce ball court and even private sand dunes. As far as luxurious celebrity homes go, this one is up there with the best of them.

In May 2020, billionaire businessman and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg purchased a reclusive ranch in Aspen, Colorado. Following his failed presidential campaign, which reportedly cost him more than $1 billion (£791m), Business Insider suggested, we're sure Bloomberg is enjoying spending some downtime here.

The sprawling ranch can be found just under an hour from Aspen and set Bloomberg back an estimated $44.8 million (£35.5m) – and for good reason. The 4,600-acre estate comes with a 19,000-square-foot main house, a four-hole golf course, a swimming pool, tennis court, guest cabins and staff quarters.

Known as Westlands, the ranch also boasts a private helipad and hangar so that Bloomberg can make a speedy escape whenever the need arises. The home dates back to 1991 and its interior spaces feature towering ceilings and plenty of characterful design touches such as exposed timber beams, stone fireplaces and elaborate antler chandeliers. 

The main house comes with five bedrooms, a wine cellar, a movie theatre and an indoor hot tub overlooking the garden. Each of the bedrooms comes with exposed log rafters and large fireplaces, while the home's communal spaces are split into zones for unwinding and zones for entertaining.

Outside, you'll find endless space, with no neighbours for miles. The ultimate billionaire bolthole, this isn't the only property that Bloomberg owns. In fact, he's said to have a mansion in Manhattan, a villa in Bermuda, and a townhouse in London.

Fans of Reese Witherspoon will already know that the Oscar-winning actor is somewhat of a real estate mogul. Over the years, the Big Little Lies star has snapped up her fair share of beautiful abodes, primarily living with her family in the Pacific Palisades areas of Los Angeles. However, in August 2019 the actor purchased a charming farmhouse above Zuma Beach in Malibu...

Witherspoon reportedly paid $6.25 million (£5m) for the stylish estate, which sits on two pristine acres of land behind a set of secure gates. The farmhouse was built in 1949 and boasts light-filled, open-plan living spaces with plenty of rustic charm.

Described by Variety as a 'magazine-spread ready hobby farm', the property offers three bright and contemporary bedrooms, three vintage-inspired bathrooms and plenty of mid-century features, including beamed ceilings, brick fireplaces and timber-clad walls. Before Witherspoon snapped up the estate, it was previously used as a wedding venue. 

As well as the main farmhouse, the estate also comes with a guest barn, an art studio and a yoga room, plus a chic screening room with its very own wet bar. The property is also within easy walking distance of the coast, making it the perfect weekend spot for the family. 

The home's attractive backyard is the perfect oasis in the heart of Malibu. Surrounded by 1,500-year-old sycamores, fruit trees and vegetable gardens, the grounds come complete with sprawling lawns and equestrian facilities.

Yet, after a mere 16 months of ownership, Witherspoon bid farewell to Zuma Farms, in an off-market deal for a reported $6.7 million (£5.3m). The property then returned to the market in early 2023 for $8 million (£6.3m). 

Known for his raspy voice, British rockstar Joe Cocker has journeyed a long way from his roots in the English city of Sheffield. In fact, a 240-acre estate in the heart of the Colorado mountains was the singer's long-time home. Known as Mad Dog Ranch, the Cockers commissioned the English Tudor-style home back in 1994 and lived there until the rocker's death in December 2014.

Cocker and his wife Pam took inspiration for the house from their travels across Europe, building a palatial mansion surrounded by formal English gardens and the superb landscape of rural Colorado.

Located in the town of Crawford, roughly two hours away from the ski slopes of Aspen, the property was originally meant to be a holiday spot for Cocker, but after his first winter in the home, he knew it was where he wanted to live.

Other key features of the custom-built house include a working ranch, which features a seven-stall barn, a silo, turnouts, an outdoor arena and a one-acre swimming pond. According to The Star, in December 2017, the English-inspired ranch sold at auction for $3.9 million (£3.1m), but hit the market in 2022 for the much more substantial $18 million (£14.3m) according to Forbes.

Spanning almost 16,000 square feet, Mad Dog Ranch offers eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and a stand-alone guest apartment. With three floors, the English-style manor also benefits from light-filled living areas and plenty of jaw-dropping home features that only money can buy, including a marble-clad 33-foot turretted foyer, a billiard room, a library, and a chef’s kitchen.

Many of the living spaces also open up onto outdoor patios, where sweeping views of Needle Mountain can be enjoyed.

Best known for his rendition of the Beatles’ hit 'With a Little Help from My Friends', Cocker's house is far from rock 'n' roll. Elegant and sophisticated, the property is defined by classical décor, antique furnishings and period features, such as timber-clad walls, marble floors and pretty fireplaces. The master suite even boasts a 13-foot vaulted ceiling, two bathrooms, a stone fireplace and a private balcony.

Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges once owned a rather stylish ranch in Montecito, an exclusive celebrity hotspot in Santa Barbara. The Californian retreat dates back to 1919 and was designed by esteemed architect James Osborne Craig, making it something of a historic local landmark. An apt choice for the True Grit actor, the ranch is the perfect pad for anyone with a love of horses and the great outdoors.

The Spanish Revival house is charming and traditional in equal measure, with its white rendered exterior decorated with crawling vines. Inside, the property has bags of wow-factor following a comprehensive renovation carried out by the star in 2016.

Blending original features with contemporary touches, the dwelling boasts hardwood floors, leaded windows and vaulted ceilings, while extensive glazing allows for uninterrupted views across the estate.

Over in Tennessee, you can find a solar farm that was once owned by country-rock star Sheryl Crow. The extensive property lies in College Grove, one of the most exclusive areas of Nashville, and sits on around 152 stunning acres of land. Her rolling estate comes with an array of outbuildings and guesthouses, one of which offers 2,000 square feet of interior space, three bedrooms and a two-car garage.

Known as Cross Creek Farm, the main house was constructed from brick and timber siding and is almost too big to be believed. It's thought that Hill invested a considerable amount more on further improvements, before listing the estate in 2016 for $7.3 million (£5.8m). It sold in 2017 for a cut-price $5.5 million (£4.4m).

Thanks to the complete overhaul, the three-storey house now boasts a stylish and contemporary interior, with elevator access to every floor. The property features sleek hardwood floors, striking light fixtures, traditional log-burning fireplaces, attractive architraves and rustic stonework. Some of the rooms also feature vaulted timber ceilings, while almost every space enjoys picturesque views across rolling fields.

A ranch fit for a cowboy, the expansive pad benefits from a large covered outdoor riding arena and a 14-stall barn, plus parking facilities for five cars, a swimming pool, outdoor deck, an alfresco dining area and a hot tub. The star, who credits her move to Nashville with saving her life, still lives in the area in a 50-acre property with sons Levi and Wyatt. 

Once belonging to iconic Hollywood actor Steve McQueen, a 500-acre ranch can be found nestled on a secluded lot in Hailey, Idaho. The King of Cool bought the property after marrying his third wife, Barbara Minty. Yet just a few months after the couple moved in, McQueen passed away at the age of 50 from mesothelioma in November 1980.

Known officially as the Pioneer Moon Ranch, McQueen and Minty nicknamed the property the Crazy M Ranch. Last listed for $7.4 million (£5.9m) in 2013, the property has undergone numerous changes since McQueen's day. A separate two-bedroom log cabin was built on the estate in 1990, while a 1,700-square-foot entertainment annexe was added in 2010.

Located in the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains, the ranch was once pared-back and rustic. Yet thanks to an extensive renovation, the pad is now contemporary and stylish, while still maintaining much of its traditional charm.

Kenny Rogers isn't the only musician to have taken inspiration from his surroundings and American singer-songwriter Carole King spent many years writing songs that were influenced by the stunning landscape of Idaho, USA. Positioned inside the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, her 128-acre ranch belonged to King for more than 30 years, until she listed it for sale in 2015 for a substantial $9.9 million (£7.8m).

Known as the Robinson Bar Ranch, this stunning hideaway comes equipped with a 7,337-square-foot main residence, as well as several ranch buildings, a horse barn and endless land waiting to be explored. Ideal for whitewater rafting, the Salmon River also runs directly through the estate, making this dreamy oasis the perfect spot for adrenaline junkies too.

Best known for playing Sandy in the iconic 1978 movie Grease, the late, great Olivia Newton-John lived on a sprawling ranch in New South Wales, Australia for almost four decades.

The Grammy Award-winning singer, who passed away in August 2022, purchased the 187-acre estate a few years after the movie was released, but placed the property on the real estate market in 2019 for $3.7million (£2.9m). The stunning Australian estate is located just outside the glistening coastal town of Byron Bay and borders the stunning landscapes of Victoria Park Nature Reserve.

Surrounded by an ancient rainforest, Newton-John is said to have planted more than 10,000 trees on the ranch over the years and its mature garden is truly spectacular. With lawns stretching as far as the eye can see, the extensive lot comes with several dams and streams, a natural waterfall and a creek. The ultimate pad for those with horses or farmyard animals, there's plenty of space for livestock to roam.

Newton-John's former bedroom is one of the home's finest spaces, offering a walk-out balcony with truly breathtaking scenery. Growing up the daughter of an iconic country-rock musician, Cyrus has moved from one captivating property to another. Her fabulous farmhouse, located in the singer's hometown of Franklin, Tennessee is just one of her spectacular properties...

Inside, the deluxe farmhouse is every bit as stunning as you'd imagine. The expansive two-storey home spans 6,869 square feet and features five bedrooms and four bathrooms. A soaring cathedral ceiling, exposed timber beams and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace add real wow-factor to the living room, while swathes of windows allow for a seamless connection between the outside and inside spaces.

Built in 2014, the living spaces are an eclectic blend of old and new, offering contemporary touches and classic country details. The 'Wrecking Ball' singer bought the wow-factor farmhouse back in 2016 for $5.8 million (£4.6m). As well as a stunning master bedroom fit for a musical icon, the beautiful estate also comes with a three-car garage, an outdoor swimming pool and elevator access to each floor. Miley sold the sprawling Franklin ranch for $14.5 million (£11.5m) in August 2022 to Dairy Queen mogul, Matt Frauenshuh. 

Hollywood mega-star Tom Cruise is reportedly worth $600 million (£475m), so it's no wonder he is the proud owner of some seriously envy-inducing homes. The star's stunning Telluride ranch spans an amazing 320 acres, so there's no chance of prying eyes. The veteran actor bought the property in the early 1990s and spent several years building a star-worthy estate.

The ranch was the setting of Cruise's famous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2008, and where he captured the first images of his daughter Suri, so it obviously holds a special place in the star's heart.

The luxurious remote home is surrounded by national forest land and lies close to Telluride's sought-after ski slopes and golf courses. Inside, the 10,000-square-foot residence has vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and unforgettable alpine views.

Built from bleached cedar timbers and native stone, the custom mansion offers a total of four bedrooms. With wood pillars and exposed beam ceilings, the expansive lower level is home to a formal dining room, den and games room. In addition to the main house, there's also a separate three-bedroom lodge, where Cruise has no doubt hosted plenty of VIP guests over the years.

Unsurprisingly, the pad is jam-packed full of luxury amenities, including a fitness centre, a state-of-the-art security system, a snowmelt system, a wet bar and underfloor heating. In March 2021, Cruise decided to part ways with the gorgeous rural ranch, placing it on the market for a cool $39.5 million (£31.3m) and within a month, the luxurious home had secured a buyer. 

In addition to his Colorado home, Cruise is also said to own a luxurious penthouse apartment in the city of Clearwater, Florida, where the headquarters of Scientology is located – Cruise is perhaps the religion's most famous member. American icon Jane Fonda has been in the public eye for decades, so it makes sense that the actor and activist likes to spend her downtime away from the limelight. And what better place to do so than at a secluded ranch in the heart of New Mexico?

Fonda reportedly purchased the 2,300-acre estate in 2000 for an undisclosed sum and we can definitely understand what drew her to the pile. Known as Forked Lightning Ranch, the property spans almost four miles of New Mexico's famed Pecos River and offers exceptional landscaped grounds – not to mention total seclusion.

Fonda spent a number of years making improvements to the property. Thankfully, the Grace and Frankie star maintained the home's distinctive hacienda aesthetic and also undertook a barn renovation, creating a twelve-stall stable, office and gym. She is said to have later added the River House, which became the estate's main residence. 

The River House offers 9,600 square feet of inside space and plenty of characterful touches. The Spanish Colonial-style home featured in the March 2014 issue of Architectural Digest, and is said to feature numerous energy-efficient elements and sustainable materials, making this eco home both stylish and totally sustainable. It offers six bedrooms, four bathrooms, rustic beamed ceilings, a swimming pool and even a bell tower.

Forked Lightning Ranch also has an original barn and a log cottage with 3,400 square feet of inside space – perfect for VIP guests. In 2015, Fonda decided to part ways with the property and placed it up for sale. It eventually sold for $19.5 million (£15.4m), after lingering on the market for almost a year.
